It's that time again - when the temperature rises and the test kernels
are almost baked! Yes, folks it's time for the semi-annual,
semi-irregular LUG BBQ!

In the past members from several LUGs in the SF Valley and surrounds
have gotten together a couple of times a year to burn burgers, build
wireless antennae, and share software horror stories. If you're
interested, pictures of past BBQ's are at
http://www.sclug.org//pictures.cgi

In the interests of LUG harmony, we're extending the invitation for this
BBQ to all LUG'ers, BSD'ers, and OpenSourcers within reasonable driving
distance. Heck, even if it's an unreasonable driving distance, feel
free to join us!

Date:
August 23rd
Time: start at 5:30 p.m., till ??
Location: Simi Valley. (info is at http://www.sclug.org/bbq/)

If you're interested in attending, send an RSVP to bbq@.... We'll
contact you and see what you'd like to bring. See you there!

TOORCON 2003 LINEUP FINALIZED

We are proud to announce the finalized lineup for ToorCon this year.
With a total of 29 talks on 2 tracks spanning 2 days, we have a
really compelling lineup this year. This year we are going Back to
Basics and introducing a Policy and Procedure track along side the
standard Attack and Defense topics. This bridges the gap between the
underground attack and defense technologies that are being developed
and the business policies and laws that are in place to ensure your
safety and security. This year will also have a special emphasis on
wireless, cryptography, and steganography technologies that are being
developed to protect your freedom and anonymity from the every
increasing listening entities on the internet. More information is
available at:

http://www.toorcon.org

PRE-REGISTRATION

Pre-registration for toorcon this year is only $50 and will be
closing September 12th, 2003, so please pre-register ASAP and save
$15 off the door price! To commemorate our 5-year milestone, we will
be giving away official commemorative t-shirts to the first 50
registered attendees. There are a few shirts left so register today
for your chance at a FREE shirt.

I am setting up the December meeting for Lilax (http://www.lilax.org)
and wanted to know how many of you would show up for the following
presentation by GenaWare. Take a look at the following information and
then the proposed talk. If you will be attending let me know by sending
an affirmative e-mail to me - if there are a good number who are
interested then the company will have the speakers fly out. I believe
they are coming from NC.

These days this kind of information regarding potential attendance is
the kind of thing that companies would like to gather prior to making
the commitment. If there are not many of you who can attend then it
might be that we can postpone the session to next year.

Thanks, Ismet

222 N. Sepulveda in El Segundo
               10th Floor -- Martinique Room

          -----------------------------------------------

For the past decade, a vendor hostile to UNIX has dominated the office suite
software market, but the release of StarOffice 7 / OpenOffice 1.1 for
Solaris, Linux, and Windows marked the first credible assault ever on that
monopoly.

At the March meeting of UUASC-LA, Dan Kegel, engineer at Google and host of
http://lalugs.org , makes his UUASC debut by explaining how to migrate
most Microsoft Office users to UNIX-compatible applications without getting
lynched.

To ensure that last part, Dan will provide tips on how to run a successful
trial deployment and how to give good feedback to Sun on problems found
during the trial so that subsequent releases address those issues. Dan will
give examples of compatibility problems and crashes he uncovered during his
own testing, and reveal to us how well Sun responded to those problems.

Dan's past projects include:
-- making it easier to build gcc, http://kegel.com/crosstool
-- QA on OpenOffice, http://kegel.com/openoffice
-- evangelizing Linux in universities, http://kegel.com/linux/edu
-- showing developers how to handle zillions of network connections,
http://kegel.com/c10k.html
-- how to craft peer-to-peer software that can be used behind firewalls,
http://www.alumni.caltech.edu/~dank/peer-nat.html
Dan also contributed to the networked versions of classic games such as
MechWarrior 2 at Activision.

After the meeting, you are invited to mingle with many of the chapter
members at UUASC-LA's favorite dining and drinking spot. Details will be
presented at the meeting.

WARNING: People may take photographs of UUASC-LA meetings and social events.
If someone is absolutely opposed to having his or her photograph taken, that
person needs to please speak with the photographer.

Warning to photographers: You must have a person's permission to post
photographs in any public manner.

Microsystems, for the continued support of our meetings.

         --------------------------------------------------

UUASC is for all persons using UNIX either personally or professionally, or
interested in learning more about UNIX. We recognize all varieties of UNIX,
including (without prejudice) SCO, Linux, SVr4, Solaris, AIX, HP/UX, and
BSD. This is a good place to meet others with similar interests and broaden
your skills and knowledge.

There are two UUASC chapters serving Los Angeles and Orange Counties.
Meeting locations for each chapter are detailed at our web site,
www.uuasc.org. Please visit our web site.

There are no dues or other membership requirements. More than 250 persons
receive our monthly email newsletter, and more than 200 persons receive our
daily emails from our members. Meeting attendance varies to as high as 60.
Volunteers manage the club and more volunteers are always needed.

Los Angeles County Chapter meetings are held the first Thursday of each
month from 7 to 9 pm ( or whenever we feel like stopping ). Generally,
meetings include a technical presentation on a hardware or software topic of
current interest to the UNIX community and a round-table discussion of
current topics of interest to the group. UUASC-LA needs future topic
suggestions (and volunteers)!!

Greetings all,
Hopefully everyone is having a good summer and staying cool. Planning has
begun for the Southern California Linux Expo Version 3.0 so now the time to
start planning out LUG involvement. We had a great showing of LUG booths
last year as well as great attendance by LUG members, we would like to see
more. We are currently planning SCALE 3.0 to be a two day event, February
12th and 13th (Saturday and Sunday). More details will follow in the coming
months.

Because we like to keep this as a for the community, we would like to
solicit ideas from everyone on what they thought that SCALE 2 was lacking
and what they might want to see in SCALE 3. Please send those ideas to
gareth@... with "SCALE IDEA" in the subject (just as a matter
of filtering for me :)

There is a good amount of time between now and SCALE 3 but as always it'll
be here before we know it, please plan early.

Thank you.

No idea, but you're right, I can't reach it either.
Maybe the Sunday evening chat would be the place to bring it up?
Last I heard it was:

Greetings Everyone -

We're planning another SCLUG-hosted BBQ on the 18th of September and
are extending an invitation to members of other LUGs to join us. The BBQ
will be shifting venues this time. Rather than the past location at
Orv Beach's house in Simi Valley, we'll be at Craig Zeller's house in
Tujunga. The BBQ will begin at 1pm and will run until Craig kills the power
and Internet access :)

This will be a true geek BBQ, so there will be Internet access (wired and
wireless). However, space will be tight so if you're planning to bring a
machine, bring a laptop; no desktops please :) We will also not be held
responsible for BBQ sauce in keyboards or ketchup in mice :)

Craig will be providing chili as well as BBQ chicken. We'll need others to
bring side dishes or additional meat. Contact Orv Beach
<orv@...> and let him know what you're bringing.

More information including the address & directions can be found at
http://www.sclug.org/bbq/

Thanks and hope to see everyone there!

I updated http://lalugs.org tonight. In particular, I made
a pass through the LUG listings and moved all
the dead-looking ones to an 'inactive' list.
I was surprised to see usclug and lilax's sites down;
are those groups still alive?

I also moved the list of LUGs closer to the top, since it seems
to be the most important thing after the event calendar.

Have a look at the site and let me know if there
are any corrections or improvements I should do.

Thanks,
Dan

Due to some domain registration fun, lilax had to move to
unixforall.org, however that site seems to be down as well.

These were sent to webmaster@..., so what the heck,
maybe you know somebody qualified who feels like moving to Dublin
or Mountain View...
- Dan

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Site Reliability Engineer

Location: Either Mountain View, CA or Dublin, Ireland

- We are looking for a detail-oriented systems professional, seasoned Unix
jockey, Internet services architect, database whiz, performance analyst,
or software engineer, at the top of their game.

- Can you help achieve increased Availability, Reliability, Uptime, and
Quality? (for our systems and services, naturally) Site Reliability
Engineers (SREs) are involved in all aspects of running our site, from
design to debug, from architecture to applications. Google SREs spend
their time troubleshooting problems in large-scale clustered application
service environments, and focus on making continual improvements to
our services.

- Looking for the next cool problem to solve, in a fast-paced and
engineering-driven environment?

- Can you write a script or application that performs practically the
entire job you once held earlier in your career?

- Does your idea of a good time involve taking things apart just to
see how they work? Are you successful putting them back together when
you're done?

- This position requires a passion for problem solving, deep understanding
of networks, operating systems, multi-tiered Internet services, and the
ability to learn new applications and concepts quickly. Strong scripting
skills are essential.

- As an SRE, you will wear many hats: performance analyst, service
architect, system/database administrator, capacity planner, tools
developer, monitoring expert, and technical evangelist, for all components
of Google's Ads services.

I will take the guess work out of whether or not you are a fit!!!

If you can answer yes to all of the following questions, you are a
possible fit, so please apply!

1. Do you have at least a BS or BA in computer science or a related
technical field?

2. Do you have 3+ years of experience as a Unix/Linux Systems
Administrator or networking architecture experience?

3. Do you have experience in a high-volume or critical production
service environment?

4. Do you have experience in Python programming or Perl or scripting?

5. Do you have experience with programming and troubleshooting skills
in C/C++ and or Java?

6. Do you have excellent written and verbal communication skills?

7. Have you been at a majority of your companies for at least 3 years
or more (this question does not apply to contractors)?

If you have answered yes to all of the above questions, please apply
for this position!

Please be sure your resume clearly reflects the experience asked about
above.

For immediate consideration, please send a text (ASCII) or HTML version
of your resume to : mdove@...

We're looking for a highly technical, hands-on Engineering or Operations
Manager to lead a team of 4-10+ Google software engineers and sysadmins
in Site Reliability. Site Reliability teams are directly responsible for
Google's stellar uptime record, and act as the guardians and custodians
of Google's user-visible services. In the manager role, you will be
responsible for ensuring that Google users can always reach and use all
of the services under your team's care.

Requirements:

      * Very high technical competence and strong academic record.
      * Currently holding a very senior or Director level role.
      * 4+ years of relevant hands-on technical experience, and a record
        of individual technical achievement.

        end-user systems.
      * That rare mix of intelligence, integrity, domain knowledge, verbal
agility, and diplomacy which allows you to rapidly earn the trust
of technically-astute teams across the company.
