At the SCALE conference, I recall a booth sponsered by
a So. CA Debian users group, but can't find any
reference to them anywhere, including the link
at www.lalugs.org.
Anyone know if this group is still active?

I updated http://lalugs.org tonight. In particular, I made
a pass through the LUG listings and moved all
the dead-looking ones to an 'inactive' list.
I was surprised to see usclug and lilax's sites down;
are those groups still alive?

I also moved the list of LUGs closer to the top, since it seems
to be the most important thing after the event calendar.

Have a look at the site and let me know if there
are any corrections or improvements I should do.

Thanks,
Dan

Due to some domain registration fun, lilax had to move to
unixforall.org, however that site seems to be down as well.

These were sent to webmaster@..., so what the heck,
maybe you know somebody qualified who feels like moving to Dublin
or Mountain View...
- Dan

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Site Reliability Engineer

Location: Either Mountain View, CA or Dublin, Ireland

- We are looking for a detail-oriented systems professional, seasoned Unix
jockey, Internet services architect, database whiz, performance analyst,
or software engineer, at the top of their game.

- Can you help achieve increased Availability, Reliability, Uptime, and
Quality? (for our systems and services, naturally) Site Reliability
Engineers (SREs) are involved in all aspects of running our site, from
design to debug, from architecture to applications. Google SREs spend
their time troubleshooting problems in large-scale clustered application
service environments, and focus on making continual improvements to
our services.

- Looking for the next cool problem to solve, in a fast-paced and
engineering-driven environment?

- Can you write a script or application that performs practically the
entire job you once held earlier in your career?

- Does your idea of a good time involve taking things apart just to
see how they work? Are you successful putting them back together when
you're done?

- This position requires a passion for problem solving, deep understanding
of networks, operating systems, multi-tiered Internet services, and the
ability to learn new applications and concepts quickly. Strong scripting
skills are essential.

- As an SRE, you will wear many hats: performance analyst, service
architect, system/database administrator, capacity planner, tools
developer, monitoring expert, and technical evangelist, for all components
of Google's Ads services.

I will take the guess work out of whether or not you are a fit!!!

If you can answer yes to all of the following questions, you are a
possible fit, so please apply!

1. Do you have at least a BS or BA in computer science or a related
technical field?

2. Do you have 3+ years of experience as a Unix/Linux Systems
Administrator or networking architecture experience?

3. Do you have experience in a high-volume or critical production
service environment?

4. Do you have experience in Python programming or Perl or scripting?

5. Do you have experience with programming and troubleshooting skills
in C/C++ and or Java?

6. Do you have excellent written and verbal communication skills?

7. Have you been at a majority of your companies for at least 3 years
or more (this question does not apply to contractors)?

If you have answered yes to all of the above questions, please apply
for this position!

Please be sure your resume clearly reflects the experience asked about
above.

For immediate consideration, please send a text (ASCII) or HTML version
of your resume to : mdove@...

Important: The subject field of your email must include

"Site Reliability Engineer - Mountain View, CA"
or
"Site Reliability Engineer - Dublin, Ireland"

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Site Reliability Manager

Position based in Mountain View, CA.

We're looking for a highly technical, hands-on Engineering or Operations
Manager to lead a team of 4-10+ Google software engineers and sysadmins
in Site Reliability. Site Reliability teams are directly responsible for
Google's stellar uptime record, and act as the guardians and custodians
of Google's user-visible services. In the manager role, you will be
responsible for ensuring that Google users can always reach and use all
of the services under your team's care.

Requirements:

      * Very high technical competence and strong academic record.
      * Currently holding a very senior or Director level role.
      * 4+ years of relevant hands-on technical experience, and a record
        of individual technical achievement.
      * 3-10+ years of relevant experience managing software development
        and/or operations teams.
      * Strong project management skills, especially in deploying live
        end-user systems.
      * That rare mix of intelligence, integrity, domain knowledge, verbal
agility, and diplomacy which allows you to rapidly earn the trust
of technically-astute teams across the company.
      * BA/BS in CS preferred; MS / Ph.D. a plus.

AMR Research, an independent enterprise software research and advisory
firm, is currently conducting a study on the evolution of the patterns
of Linux adoption within IT organizations. The resulting report will
focus on the paths of Linux adoption and progression within IT
environments, and the factors that encourage or discourage its use.

We would like to talk with Linux users and discuss the Linux history of
their IT environment; how it was evaluated, what they started with, what
they are using it for now, and what their intended next steps are.

Interviews usually take 20-30 minutes. All participants will receive a
free copy of the report and all conversations will be kept confidential.

While most of the presentation tracks at SCALE are filling nicely, we
have a large void in the beginner tutorials. This is our opportunity to
present Open Source software to those who are merely interested, and we
need to take advantage of this opportunity.

Would you like to talk at SCALE? You don't need to be a Linux guru by
any means. If you are comfortable speaking in front of a group, please
consider volunteering for a beginner's tutorial. In this way you can
contribute something back to OpenSource.

Here are some ideas for beginner's topics. Feel free to come up with
others! The topics should take around an hour, or perhaps a bit less to
allow for some Q&A:

- Overview of Linux
- What's a 'distro', and what does it include?
- Comparison of a few of the major distros
- All about KDE
- All about GNOME
- Comparison of MS Office and OpenOffice
- Linux equivalents for popular WinPrograms (good opportunity for a
handout)
- LiveCD's - what are they, and what's out there?
- How to maintain a Linux system (yum, apt, yast, urpmi, etc.)
- Very basic TCP/IP networking.
- How to set up a basic Windows-share (via Samba)
- How to use set up and use WebMin
- Basic Wireless Networking (TOPIC ALREADY TAKEN)

For those interested, please email your topic idea to
kapadia@....

Thank you!

Dan,

For an upcoming LALUGS meeting, I thought you may be interested in
having XenSource (www.xensource.com <http://www.xensource.com/>) present
on “Enterprise Grade Virtualization with Open Source Technologies”.
XenSource was founded by the creators of the Open Source Xen
hypervisor. Xen is Open Source software, released under the terms of
the GNU General Public License.

Below is an abstract for your consideration. If you have questions or
would like to discuss scheduling a presentation, please let me know.

I can be reached at 650-947-7400 or heather@...
<mailto:heather@...>.

Thank you.

Best regards, Heather

Abstract: Virtualization is a new and hot item to the world of Linux and
Windows. There have been, however, virtualization technologies for over
40 years starting with the IBM emulators for mainframes and later with
the CP67 and VM virtualizing operating systems.

Open Source operating systems like Linux offer the potential to make
virtualization fast, easy and a commodity by introducing the required
changes into the OS as part of the standard kernel. Fast virtualization
with a low overhead, furthermore makes it possible for the first time to
use it in production environments (rather than just test and development).

Xen, the leading Open Source virtualization technology has quickly
become a standard adopted by many leading ISVs to build comprehensive
data center efficiency and management solutions. This session will
provide an overview of Xen and discuss best practices for deploying it
to achieve enterprise grade virtualization.

Subject: Raincoast User Group Conference: Linux / LUGs Now Invited!
Date: Tue, 06 Sep 2005 18:16:59 -0700
From: Derek Simkowiak <dereks@...>
To: dereks@...

     Dear Linux User,
My name is Derek Simkowiak. In the past, I have presented at
LinuxFest Northwest, and spoken about Linux on local T.V. This year, I
am volunteering as the Linux User Group Coordinator for the the
Raincoast Conference.

Raincoast is non-profit user group conference that is operating
system agnostic. It has been running for 12 years, and represents the
entire Pacific Northwest area. It has corporate sponsors, including
Microsoft, Adobe, Macromedia, and IBM.

This year is the first year that Raincoast has had an official
"Linux Coordinator" on the Board. I am determined to make a strong
showing for Linux. This is a great opportunity to show Mac and Windows
users the kind of fun we like to have.

The conference is a 3-day weekend conference in La Quinta Inn,
Tacoma, WA, on Oct. 7, 8, and 9. There is a $60 entrance fee, which is
for all Round Table sessions, conference meals, social events, and door
prizes. If you register before Friday, Sept. 9th, there is a $10
discount, so it's $50 to get in. (I'm on the board and even I have to
pay the $50 to get in.)

On Friday night, we are going to have an open exposé, which offers a
free display table to user groups, and room for a technical bazaar. I'd
love to see some of the same great stuff I saw at Linuxfest Northwest
again at Raincoast. (Read: untapped market.)

In addition to showing off Linux, I'd like to use the cross-platform
nature of the conference to showcase some of the best cross-platform
Open Source software, for example:

     o Mozilla Firefox
     o Mozilla Thunderbird
     o The GIMP
     o OpenOffice.org (the 2.0 beta is incredible!)
o Blender (3D modelling, animation, and game engine)
     o Python

I'm looking for volunteers to give demonstrations on these. I'm
also taking recommendations for other good Open Source, cross-platform
software that we could showcase -- for example, a demonstration of
Apache+PHP under Mac OS X. I'm hoping that we can hand out the software
on CD-ROM at the conference, and then walk people through the installs
while we're there.

I will also be contacting some local Linux businesses, to seek help
with a corporate presence. Larger corporate sponsorship packages, such
as sponsored luncheons, are available. "Have CD-ROMs; will logo." (Any
biz references are appreciated.)

The registration is limited to 150 people. You can register at
http://www.raincoast.info/. Wireless Internet access will be available
to conference attendees. And as usual, where there's Linux, there's beer.

     Thank You,
     Derek Simkowiak
     Raincoast (Linux)

P.S.> Please forward this to anyone who may be interested.

building with a large golden globe on the top of the tower. On the right
of VKC is SOS, it's very short, and to the right of that is a very tall
building. Right behind these buildings is THH (Taper Hall of
Humanities). This is the building you want. It's very long, and
L-shaped. Towards the right is an overhang and some glass doors, go in
there and follow the signs to the correct room. Rooms beginning with 1

done to it before I ask Dan to put it in place email them to me. Also
feel free to go there to get the latest beta copy.

In the future I wish to work with Peter Benjamin to implement his RSS

lalugs.org's content is now in a content management system
called subversion ;-)

This means that interested community members who
want to add news items to lalugs.org can do so;
all you have to do is convince me that you'd be
a good co-maintainer, and give me your gmail
address. I can then add you to the maintainers' list.

Howdy folks!
There was a BOF at SCALE yesterday about southern
california LUG coordination. It was suggested at that meeting
that we use the lalugs mailing list to continue
the discussion.

Can anyone who was at the meeting raise their hand?
Thanks,
Dan

I wasn't there, but was briefed by Kurt and Brian about what went on.

I'm very intrigued about the idea of creating a communication network
between LUGs. I am involved both with SFVLUG and LinuxChixLA, as you
know, and I think both groups would be positively inclined towards
such an effort.

I missed you at SCALE, much to my disappointment. Hope things are
going well for you, Dan.

Take care,
Michelle

We have recently released a free BarracudaDrive Web Server for the NSLU2
  Unslung Linux firmware.
A short message was posted on the NSLU2 developers group regarding this
  release:
  http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/nslu2-developers/message/1852
Would a BarracudaDrive presentation for the NSLU2 be of any interest to

Group,

Did this idea die? I'm interested in working on something like this.
What would be the next step to make this a reality?

Thanks.

The moderation system delayed your message - I'm going to
take the group off moderation for a little while.
Maybe that will help.

Hello,

No the idea has not died although communication did in fact fail. I'll
take the blame.

I actually have an email that's been in my drafts folder since mid-Fed
that I had written to address continuing the discussion. It ended up
coming off somewhat like a rant so I never sent it. I have had the
intention to recompose it for a while now. The typical excuses; work
and family have kept me busy. As well David Kaiser became very busy
just after SCALE and he and I have not taken the time to follow up on
the BOF in detail.

Since the ball is rolling now, might as well keep it going.

Let me first clarify based on some feedback that I already received.
We are not attempting to make one gigantic SoCal LUG. As David said in
the meeting there is nothing predatory going on here at all. We simply
wish to create a community to help us pool our resources. The part of
that I would like to stress is "create a community".

The suggestion was put forth at the BOF that someone already had a
website up and running with various features (wiki, mailing list,
etc.). However hardly anyone is using it. David and I are also working
on a web site, but that site does not have to be the solution either.
In fact I would say that a web site is not the solution. Its great
that we have a tool box full of tools, but what are we going to build?
We need to first build a foundation for a community and go in the
direction determined by that community.

What do you think of creating a communication network between SoCal
LUGs and other F/OSS groups, sharing speakers and events with one
another?

If you have a thought on the topic, lets here them.

Chris

How many moderators do we have?
