Reporting on a new addition to our Landscape Appreciation website: an essay by Prof. David Russell (
Many of us have frequently remarked that the appreciation of landscapes involves far more than their aesthetic appreciation, which in many cases appears to be a minor aspect of the whole action. However, outside noting that other aspects (historical, religious, affective, etc.) are usually involved, we haven't explored in depth the role those other factors might play. In A Psychological Perspective on Place, Prof. Russell deals extensively with those other angles and, as such, the Essay provides a firm starting point for exchanges of views on those topics.
Our later posts have been devoted mostly to the subject of Experience, in particular, the landscape (and/or environmental) experience. This question is discussed in the Section: Psychology, Relationship and Place, from altogether different viewpoints than those we have been focusing on. Related to this he deals also with "Sense of Place" which, some may recall, occupied us for some time back in 2005.
In following posts I hope to comment, and I am sure others will as well, on various questions raised by A Psychological Perspective on Place.
