Hi Mike,

Are you looking for a Palm RSS reader? There's Quick News and SplashNews.
I think they both can sync via hotsync.

I still use my modified LifeDrive daily and I'm still not ready to switch
to something else. There's so much that I use it for that it would be a
bit of a task to replace all the functionality. The Palm Pre looks sexy,
but I'm not ready to make the jump...plus, I don't want my data living in
the cloud.

You mean there's someone out there without an unlimited data plan? :-)

Avantgo and Vindigo don't think so...

Vindigo.com is gone

Avantgo is closing the end of the month.

Anyone know of an alternative that updates via PC hotsync,
and not wireless data minutes ?

This is one article that does say the OS is Linux. I included a link below.
I am looking for more confirmation. A Brighthand article included an
article update that states that the pre doesn't have a trackball. I wonder
if the only way is via the keyboard. I would think this is a slower way to
get to a specific place when creating or editing a document, note, etc.

Not sure where you saw that it is a Windows based OS. I believe it is Linux
based, but I am trying to confirm. On the Palm Developer Network page,
there is a statement you may have based your statement on: " Palm webOS,
Palm's next generation operating system, integrates the power of a
window-based operating system with the simplicity of a browser." Please
note that the word "window" is not capitalized.

Also, here is a link to the Texas Instruments web site for a pdf on the OMAP
3430 processor used in the PRE. Haven't determined the speed, but have seen
references from 550MHz to 1GHz so there are a range of speeds the processor
supports. The pdf states the processor supports all "high-level operating
system (HLOS) platforms including Linux, Windows Mobile, and Symbian OSes.

Which is odd, since the palm site indicated it's a windows based os,
and it would be WONDERFUL to keep my old apps. I wonder if it has a
virtual modem, to use phone minutes, instead of data minutes.

I heard that the new OS is Linux based and does not support legacy apps,
but there is a tool for developers to help port legacy PRC databases to
the WebOS. Exciting news, but if I can't get my old apps or similar
functionality witout paying too much, I think I will have to wait and see
what happens.

I also hear that there is a GSM version in the works...for Europe for the
first half of 2009. Not sure about State-side.

Their offering *DID* surprise me. I expected to be underwhelmed. The phone

That would be I. Hello, Roger. It was definitely a surprise in the last
year or so to learn that a Palm group was meeting here at Village Park.
Ralph did such a good job. I lament that the Palm platform seems to be
going extinct, tho my T3 keeps perking along. One of these days I'll have
to decide between the iPhone and the similar Blackberry. The Blackberry
demoed at the LAPUG meeting Monday sure looked tempting because of the
better camera.

Went to the Apple LAPUG this past Monday and the woman sitting next to me
plugged in her Macbook Laptop and then pulled out her Palm PDA.  She lives in
your complex and until recently was unaware of our meetings.  Hope to see you at
one of the Apple meetings.  They had a demo of the new Blackberry with the touch
screen.  Have a good holiday.  Roger

Needless to say, we're not having a meeting this Saturday. I have also not
renewed our meeting room reservations for the upcoming year. I enjoyed the
meetings we did have, however. Perhaps this will change some day in the
future.

Take care,

Ralph

I also wanted to express my great appreciation for Ralph's efforts.
Pretty much single-handedly he resuscitated LA PUG. It's unfortunate
that external circumstances seem to have reduced the appeal of the
Palm platform to people, but it was certainly not due to lack of
effort and enthusiasm on Ralph's part!

I am canceling our November meeting (this coming Saturday) due to lack of
participation in previous meetings. Haven't decided yet about meetings
after
that. I'm leaning towards canceling the use of the community room for
future
meetings.

Ralph:
Since attendance seems to be an issue with the monthly meetings, why not change
to a
quarterly meeting schedule and have "virtual" meetings (e.g., chat rooms) or
online type
meetings like WebEx (if a cheaper alternative exists) to hold discussions
online. It seems
to me that if the meetings were less frequent, perhaps you might get a larger
turn out
when the meetings actually occur.

Just my two cents.

Derek
