Welcome to Learn the Net News.
For Americans, April 15th has special meaning. It's the day that our income tax returns are due. With the soaring economy and meteoric rise of the stock market, it could mean some people will be writing a large check. This week technology guru Larry Magid looks at ways to fill out your tax forms electronically, using both software and Web-based services. You can even submit the forms electronically to the Internal Revenue Service, which they claim will result in a quicker refund. Of course if you owe money, it’s a different story!
The other night I saw a news story about the mounted police (all two of them) that patrol downtown Oakland. Beloved by the neighborhood, the horse patrol may soon go due to budget cuts. I mention this, because even in the heart of the 21st Century city, there is a special fondness for horses. So get ready to horse around with our Web Tour.

I've been harping on Internet security recently, but now I'd like to focus on another important issue that affects us all--privacy. When you're online, you leave a continuous trail of digital data in your wake. What happens to this information should be a key concern for everyone. For instance, would you consider filling out an online tax return if you thought that your personal financial information might be shared with third parties? I know I wouldn't. Would you research cancer treatments on a health site if this information made its way to your insurance company? A recent study of 21 health sites revealed some shocking results. Despite their allegedly strict privacy policies, most of the sites leaked personal information. You can read the full report at
