Learn the Net News--a free weekly service from Learn the Net.com http://www.learnthenet.com

Vol. 2, No. 21 -- Week of June 4, 2000

Welcome to Learn the Net News.

Many small businesses need to keep track of employee time and expenses. Sure, you can fill out a paper form, but then you have to do the calculations and generate an invoice. A new Web-based service does it all for you. It's even free for fewer than five employees. This week we give you the scoop on how it works.

Although Learn the Net wouldn't exist without computers, we certainly think that spending too much time online isn't healthy. Now that the weather has warmed, log off and take a hike! Our Web Tour explores sites that help you plan an outdoor adventure. Point your browser to http://www.learnthenet.com.

This month Factoids.Net has some interesting stats about "average" cybernauts. How much time do they send online? What do they do? How many sites do they visit? Find out how you stack up.

Ready to match wits with our Internet crossword puzzle? This Java game tests your knowledge of Net terminology. And don't worry, if you need help, we have hyperlinked hints. You can find a link to the game in the New Features section of the home page or just click on this link: http://www.learnthenet.com/english/html/100crossword.htm.

Writing e-mail at my PC has become a daily routine. But I recently read about a new gadget called DoCoMo that is sweeping Japan. In fact 25,000 people a day are buying one. Almost 7 million Japanese now use it. What is DoCoMo? It's a tiny cell device that sends and receives e-mail.

Evidently, the PC never really caught on it Japan. Unlike in the U.S., most people don't have one. But an easy-to-use, portable e-mail gadget is another story. Soon people will be able to use DoCoMo to shop and even make a virtual visit to the doctor.

I bring this up because despite all the buzz about wireless Internet services in the U.S., it hasn't really caught on yet. One reason is that there's an alternative--the putty-colored box sitting on your desk. Frankly, it's hard enough for me to compose messages using a big screen and a full-sized keyboard. Imagine having to read and response to messages when the screen is the size of a postage stamp! But can 7 million Japanese be wrong? There must be something there. Of course the high-tech industry can’t wait to sell us a new electronic gizmo that will "simplify" our lives. While the prospect of dealing with my e-mail at the beach is very appealing, I'm not jettisoning my PC just yet.
