Learn the Net News--a free weekly service from Learn the Net.com http://www.learnthenet.com

Vol. 2, No. 25 -- Week of July 2, 2000

-----------------------------------------------------

Welcome to Learn the Net News.

A few months ago, as some of you may recall, I railed about my problems with DSL. I'm happy to report that ever since the problems were solved, my DSL connection has worked very well. Once you have a high-speed connection to the Net, you will discover a wealth of audio and video content that would take too painfully long to access with a dial-up connection. This week, we explore the ABCs of DSL--what you should know if you are contemplating signing up for this service. If you have a need for speed, be sure to read our report.

Are you planning a picnic to celebrate the Fourth of July, or just to while away a summer afternoon? This week's Web Tour highlights some cool sites for hot weather picnicking. So before you pack your basket, make sure you have all the ingredients for a perfect outing.

Each month Factoids.Net features interesting statistics about the Internet. Is e-mail replacing snail mail? How many daily messages do UK workers exchange? Now many seniors shop online? This is the place to find answers to these not-so-burning questions!

To all our American subscribers, we wish you an explosive Fourth of July. The thing I like best about this holiday is when the night sky lights up with fireworks. Of course, you don't have to be American to enjoy fireworks. In fact this incendiary art form was invented in China centuries ago. How are they made? Find out by making your own fireworks with ABC's Be A Pyro web page: http://www.abcnews.go.com/sections/us/DailyNews/fireworks_make980701.html

Commercial fireworks packaging are now highly-prized collectibles, perhaps because of the imaginative artwork that decorates the labels. For a look at some extraordinary fireworks ephemera, visit the Virtual Fireworks Museum at http://www.geocities.com/Pentagon/Quarters/3460/.

How about setting off an online explosion? Turn your computer screen into a virtual fireworks display by visiting http://www.lafd.org/virtualfw.htm.

If you've got a fast Internet connection and long for some exciting fireworks footage, take a look at these videos: http://fireworksland.com/html/videos.html.

Finally, to celebrate Independence Day, here's a wonderful photo of fireworks over the Potomac River: http://www.nps.gov/ncro/PublicAffairs/gal/fireworks3005.jpg. Happy Holiday!!
