Vol. 2, No. 30 -- Week of August 6, 2000

Welcome to Learn the Net News.

These days, you’ll find webcams in some unlikely places—on the deck of cruise ships, in cow pastures and cornfields. While these intermittent images may be amusing, they’re hardly useful. But you can turn a webcam and PC into a personal security system that monitors your home and you can see what’s going on from anywhere. Find out how to set one up this week.

The environment takes a lot of abuse from us, yet with just a little effort, we can lessen our impact through actions like recycling and composting. Our Web Tour, It’s Easy to Be Green, highlights simple things you can do that make a big difference.

It’s August and time for another Factoids.Net—the numbers behind the Internet economy. Why do people shop online? This is the place to discover the answer to this question and lots more. Click over to: http://www.learnthenet.com/english/features/factoids.htm

Although I may know a thing or two about the Internet, when it comes to my computer, I’m the first to admit that there are some gapping holes in my knowledge. So when my PC starting giving me an error message when I booted up, I was perplexed. Just what exactly is a checksum error and how do I fix it?

Fortunately, a new Web service, protonic.com [ http://www.protonic.com/ ] came to the rescue. According to the site, "protonic.com is an online community which provides technical support to computer users for free. "

I e-mailed them my question and although protonic.com promised a response within 24-hours, I received a reply in less than an hour, asking for additional details. After I provided it, I received a very complete answer, advising me what to do. I’ve used a number of "expert" sites in the past, but this one now tops my list. It’s fast, efficient and correct! [I verified that with the technical support folks at Hewlett Packard, the company that makes my PC.]

You may not have problems now, but it’s a terrific resource to have, just in case. So check out protonic.com and be sure to bookmark it for future use.
