Vol. 2, No. 33 -- Week of August 27, 2000

Welcome to Learn the Net News.

Like most men, I’m reluctant to ask for directions when I’m lost on the road. Why I think that I’ll miraculously find my way in alien territory is always a mystery. The days of stubbornly making wrong turns may be drawing to a close with the advent of in-dash global positioning systems or GPS. With this new technology, you tell your digital navigator where you want to go and then receive verbal instructions. This week our tech guru reports on his recent GPS adventure on the tortuous freeways of Southern California: http://www.learnthenet.com/english/features/larry.htm

Canada, one of the world’s largest and most diverse countries, has something for just about everyone, from unspoiled wilderness to world-class museums. For the intrepid virtual traveler, this week’s Web Tour: Exploring Canada, highlights each of the nation’s provinces: http://www.learnthenet.com/english/features/tour.htm

Although the latest fashions still come from the runways of Paris, Milan and New York, those clothes may soon seem very 20th century compared to the newest creations from Silicon Valley. For years, futurists have been predicting that we will all be wearing computers imbedded in our clothing. The future appears much closer than I ever imagined. Are you ready for PAN, a personal area network?

Last week the Wall Street Journal reported that jeans maker Levi Strauss and electronics firm Philips will begin selling a jacket with a built-in, voice-activated MP3 player, cell phone and headset. The jacket has internal networking to transmit power and data between devices. At $900, this high-tech "wearware" may not become a best seller, but the price is sure to fall quickly if it catches on and goes into mass production.

Just imagine the possibilities—customizing your jacket so you can read e-mail on your sleeve or having up-to-the-minute sports scores and stock quotes appear inside your lining! On the other hand, advertisers are sure to get in on the act, perhaps giving away interactive clothes for free to people willing to become walking billboards. I’m sure there will be many willing candidates. After all, for $5,000, a couple recently named their baby IUMA after the music website [For the whole story, visit: http://www.iuma.com/Baby/]. It’s definitely a brave, new world. Whether it will be a better one remains to seen.
