Welcome to Learn the Net News.
With the beginning of the school year, high school seniors are being to contemplate what lies ahead. With thousands of colleges and universities to choose from, how do you decide? A variety of websites try to help with the hunt, but as technology writer and parent Larry Magid discovered, some of these sites deserve a failing grade. This week he evaluates the ones that work:

One of my favorite seasonal memories, having grown up on the East Coast, is the spectacular fall foliage. Whether you want to enjoy the show in person or just take a virtual trip through New England, our Web Tour, "Mother Nature’s Splendor," will point you in the right direction.

Although Snow White liked to whistle while she worked, personally, I enjoy listening to music. But regardless of how many CDs I have, I always seem to tire of them, so the radio is my companion of choice. The problem is that most stations play the same songs over and over, punctuated by blaring, obnoxious commercials. Fortunately, literally thousands of radio stations from all around the world are now broadcasting over the Web.
Over the past few weeks, I’ve discovered a wealth of new music from Africa, Latin America and Europe. Many of these stations are non-commercial and even if they do have ads, when they’re in French, Spanish or Portuguese, they seem much less intrusive. As the songs play, you can see the name of the artist and song. Intrigued by new discoveries, I then go to a music site like CDNow [
http://www.cdnow.com ] to learn more about the group. To listen to Net radio, your computer needs a sound card and speakers; a headset will also work. You also need the RealPlayer plug-in, which you can download for free. A terrific place to begin your global musical journey is vTuner [
http://www.vtuner.com ]. You can search by dozens of formats, for instance jazz, urban, gospel, by country and by station call letters. So give it a try. You won’t be disappointed. Now if only I could get Web radio in my car…------------------------------------------------
