I’ve been an unrepentant booster for the Internet economy from the very beginning. Living in San Francisco and both witnessing and participating in the birth of a new industry has been a fascinating experience, despite the recent turmoil on Wall Street. "What goes up, must come down," as the cliché goes. In all likelihood, many of the battered stocks will recover. Unfortunately, the same won’t hold true for the damage dotcom-mania has done to the social fabric of the Bay Area.

The overnight creation of wealth and explosion of start-ups has pushed the prices of housing and office rental to stratospheric heights. The result is that many people can no longer afford to live and work here. This has hit the arts community, which has always lived a rather marginal existence, especially hard. Funky rehearsal studios, galleries and performance spaces that once rented for a few hundred dollars a month are now renting for thousands. Hundreds of artists, musicians, dancers and other creative individuals—the very people who bring vitality to the community—are now displaced. Thousands more will soon follow unless a solution can be found quickly.

It’s a cautionary tale for other communities that are now courting technology companies in the hopes of becoming the next Silicon Valley. Be careful what you wish for, because it may have unintended results.

For those of you interested in this issue, the San Francisco Chronicle ran an insightful series of articles last week. You can read all about it at: http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/chronicle/archive/2000/10/17/MN110113.DTL
