With the holidays coming up, I’ve been searching for some inexpensive airfares. I heard about a new service, called Hotwire [www.hotwire.com], which offers discounted fares on national carriers. Unlike Priceline, you don’t name the price you want to pay. You enter your destination and travel dates and Hotwire delivers a fare. You then have thirty minutes to book it.

I took Hotwire for a test drive by requesting a ticket from San Francisco to Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. The fare it proposed was about $10 less than one currently available on the United Airlines website—that’s the good news. The bad news is that you can’t choose your flight times, you don’t know which airline you’ll be flying until you purchase the ticket, you don’t earn frequent flyer mileage, the ticket is non-changeable and nonrefundable, and you don’t get a seat assigned until you arrive at the airport. Given the stress travelers already face in the unfriendly skies, this is much too high a price to pay.

I’ll give Hotwire the benefit of the doubt for now. Perhaps other fares are significantly lower and worth the trade-off. As for me, I want as much certainty as possible when I fly and I’m willing to pay more for it. Am I in the minority on this? Let me know your thoughts.

Wishing everyone a safe and spooky Halloween!
