Tuesday, November 7th is Election Day in the United States. For a nation that prides itself on its democratic traditions, it’s shocking that most Americans don’t exercise this hard-won right. In 1960, 63% of eligible citizens voted in the presidential election. By 1996, the number had dropped to 49%--less than half the voting age population. Sadly, voting in local elections is even lower.
I’m not going to list the reasons why everyone should participate in the political process. Suffice it to say that people around the world—most recently in the former Yugoslavia-- have struggled valiantly for free elections. So no excuses, please take the time to cast your vote. It does make a difference!
