Welcome to Learn the Net News.
Last week we discussed ways to manage your e-mail, this week we tackle spam, those offensive messages that clog up almost everyone’s mailboxes. I don’t know about you, but over the last few months, I had been receiving dozens of messages a day. It became incredibly annoying--so annoying that I decided to fight back. The good news is that I’ve been able to reduce the amount of spam, although not entirely eliminate it. Follow our tips and you can do the same:

As I mentioned earlier, stopping spam has become a personal crusade. You too, can take steps to control the deluge of commercial messages. But what is government doing to address the problem? Currently there are no U.S. laws that specifically address spam, although some existing ones, like the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, have been used to prosecute spammers. That may change this year if Congress approves a recently re-introduced bill. (It’s similar to one that failed to pass last year.) The newly proposed law won’t ban spam--that would violate the First Amendment right of free speech. However, it would require that companies that send commercial messages provide a valid e-mail address where recipients could request removal from the mailing list. Spammers would have to comply or face the consequences.
Unfortunately, I’ve noticed that many spammers now seem to operate outside the U.S., so this law wouldn’t be effective against this growing international problem. It’s a start, though. For more on pending legislation in the U.S. and around the world, and to find out what you can do, visit the website of CAUCE, the Coalition Against Unsolicited Commercial Email at
