Welcome to Learn the Net News.

E-mail is the most popular use of the Internet. With a bit of practice, sending and receiving messages is a snap. Not so simple, however, is finding someone’s e-mail address. This week we show you how to become a cyber-sleuth to track down those elusive addresses: http://www.learnthenet.com/english/html/68find.htm

We are frequently asked to recommend good computer training sites. Unfortunately, not many good ones exist, with a few notable exceptions. Our CoolTools pick this week focuses on Windows tutorials, so if you have a PC and need some pointers, check out http://www.learnthenet.com/english/features/cooltool.htm .

You may have heard about the energy crisis that has plagued California recently. Is it all those computers humming away that have precipitated this problem? The bad news is that the energy drain may soon spread to other states and countries. You can help by tweaking your computer so it’s more energy efficient. Learn how at http://www.learnthenet.com/english/features/larry.htm .

If you’re like most folks, eventually you will encounter some technical difficulties with your Internet service provider. Before you call for help, know how to make the most of technical support: http://www.learnthenet.com/english/features/tour.htm

If you do research online, one frustration is that it can take weeks or even months before all-purpose search engines index new content such as magazine articles. To hunt for something recent you have to go to the sites of individual publications. It’s not very efficient.

Recently a service called MagPortal.com [ http://MagPortal.com ] was brought to our attention. It indexes a wide range of magazines--Time, The Atlantic Monthly, Scientific American, Forbes, to name just a few. You can search by category, subject or do a keyword search. You then get a list of links to the appropriate articles. Give it a try. It’s certainly a great way to save time when looking for topical content.
