April marks the beginning of our sixth year of publication of Learn the Net. To quote the Grateful Dead, "What a long, strange trip it’s been." When we started the site, we had no idea where it would lead or even if it would find an audience. It was an experiment for us and in many ways it still is. Over the years we’ve been gratified by the many awards the site has garnered. But the most satisfying experience for me has been communicating with thousands of people from around the world.

Hardly a day goes by when we don’t receive messages from places like Algeria, Peru and India. We also hear from readers in America’s heartland, across Canada and Australia. The Internet has certainly made the world a more intimate and interesting place. We like to think that our modest efforts have contributed in a small way to the extraordinary growth of this new medium.

Despite the economic downturn and demise of many dotcom companies, we have every intention of continuing and improving Learn the Net. In fact we will soon have a Chinese edition of the site. Many wonderful ideas have come from our faithful readers, so I encourage you to write me with any suggestions you have.

Finally, last week the New York Times ran a story about sites for Internet novices. Learn the Net received its fifteen minutes of fame. If you’re interested in reading the article, go to http://www.nytimes.com/2001/04/19/technology/19LEAR.html . [You will have to register with the site to access the archives.]
