Eden, I love it! I personally like the black lettering best. Can I order a t-shirt even if I dont go?
Thanks

Hey all!
Finally got some concepts finished for the design this year! I want to get some input from everyone on them, though, before we submit the final product!
This year I decided to go with a drawing of Tidus in memory of his passing last December. I had been planning on making a very simple design done in a calligraphy brush-art style, hoping it'd look basic but still elegant. However, my mom suggested I try referencing a certain photo by David Haring, as she thought it looked really striking and seemed like a good way to remember him. Going with the second idea, the semi-final product is THIS.
There are three alternate versions that have different colors on the lettering beside him. We have GREEN, MULTICOLORED , and the very first concept, BLACK. The black example has a few other differences. A longer snout on Titus (this was the original- I shortened it after looking at the reference photo), less decorative plant-matter in his hand, and the lettering is closer to his face.
If anyone has feedback on these designs, let me know! Tell me which look you like, point out anything you don't like, etc. These designs are for you guys, so I always like to hear what you think! (: Some concerns I've heard so far include things such as how the ? before 1983 looks odd (I can agree, there. I just didn't know his exact age, only an estimate). Should I just remove that and leave only the December 3rd date when he passed? Or should I remove the date altogether? It was also mentioned that the black lettering seemed to compete for attention with the rest of the design. I tried to fix that by changing the color of the text- did that help at all? If so, which do you guys prefer? If it's the font itself that's the problem then I could go in and change that.
Any feedback is welcome! (: Hope you guys like this year's design!
I vote for black or dark lettering (please not multi-colored!). The shorter
muzzle is definitely better but I think I like the lettering closer to the face.
I'm not keen on the ? before 1983, I'd probably just leave out the dates
altogether.
It's a very nice drawing, too.

Hi Eden. Beautiful illustration! Maybe you could illustrate some childrens' books with lemurs in them. Without looking back at the others' comments, I'll say I like this one: http://i230.photobucket.com/albums/ee129/Zahzu/09LemurCon-Concept3-v2.png (I forget which one it was - the one with straight greenery..) I also like the black lettering, but the curly underscore design is a bit distracting from the gorgeous picture, as is the Lemurcon in calligraphy. I also agree, Lemurcon is always one word. I'd recommend some simpler type. Also, I'm not sure how I feel about the 'in memory of Titus' part + the dates.....maybe you could put the 'in memory of' smaller and in a
less prominent place (like under the illustration) and just put the years if you can't get the exact dates. I can't wait for my shirt! ~Priscilla

Hi Vance.
John & I will be there this year.
We'll be attending as Mr. & Mrs. Flores. Got married in Italy in July.
We both have photos from last year up on our Flickr accounts:
johnmflores and indri500. We add more occasionally. I'll try to get some more up
there soon since I finally have some time.
I'll get our registration forms out to you soon.
I loooove the sifaka constellation black t-shirt! Thanks for putting that up!

I finally posted the best of my lemurcon 2008 photos.
Go to Flickr.com and search for me: Indri500. They're under my 'lemurs' set.
I also have some from previous years in that set, but the ones from last year
are labeled as such.
If anyone wants a copy of the original file (primarily because you're in it,)
I'd be happy to send it to you.

Oh, I had forgotten I did that. For everyone else's benefit: in
addition to the CafePress links I posted before, I also created a
replica of the 2001 design at <http://www.cafepress.com/lemurcon01>.
Their preview kinda sucks; you can see a better idea of what it
looks like at <http://www.nyx.net/~vkochend/tshirt2001lg.gif>.
It's not *exactly* the same as the screen-printed original, but
it's the closest you're going to get without robbing someone who
was there in 2001. Glad to hear the CafePress version came out
looking OK.

So far with the extra plant-matter, I've been told by some that they like the extra, saying the curly strands sort of 'soften' the look of the flowers. Does anyone else in the group have a preference on this?
I tried a few different looks with the letters. VERSION ONE has a cursive-style font, with the LemurCOn text slightly away from the face. I removed the ? and the exact dateof his death, leaving only the estimated years.
VERSION TWO has thinner lettering with LemurCon text closer to the face, and I replaced the dates with the Latin name of Titus' species.
Do either of these work as a compromise? Was there anything from the old designs (placement of the "In Memory", etc.) that anyone really doesn't want changed? Let me know!
Sorry if you guys think this whole feedback process is just turning out to be more trouble than it's worth!
Also, I thought I'd mention some random info about my original lettering. My very first concept for the shirt was drawn in a more calligraphic look, which I had originally drawn the letters for. I thought the text looked interesting so I added it to the photo-referenced design seen in these semi-final products, even though this design was drawn in a different art style. I knew it didn't quite fit with the new design, I just liked how the letters turned out so I gave it a try! :P ... And, yes, the whole point of that story was just to link that old design, haha! (:
Let me know if you have any comments about the 2 new designs!

I've added the tote bag to the CafePress store.
As for schedule, I need to confirm the details with Ken and DLC.
Tentatively, Friday dinner we'll be leaving the hotel at 6:30pm to
go to Bullock's Bar-B-Que, and Saturday at the Lemur Center will
start at 9:00am.
Look for a followup posting with the full details.

Okay, here's the plan for this weekend:
Friday, 11 September
6:15 PM - Meet in hotel parking lot
6:30 PM - Head to Bullock's Bar-B-Que <http://bullocksbbq.com/> for
dinner
Saturday, 12 September
8:30 AM - Meet in hotel parking lot
8:45 AM - Caravan over to Lemur Center
9:00 AM - Lemur Center Tour
10:30 AM - Presentation by Tom Struhsaker
11:30 AM - Presentation by Amy Schrier
12:30 PM - Lunch and frantic spending at gift shop
1:00 PM
to - Unguided lemur viewing and volunteer project, head back to hotel
4:30 PM
6:15 PM - Meet in hotel parking lot
6:30 PM - Head to Ken and Bonnie's home for dinner
Sunday, 7 September
9:45 AM - Meet in hotel parking lot
10:00 AM - Head to Honey's <http://www.honeysrestaurant.com/index.htm>
for end-of-con breakfast
11:30 AM (ish) - Possible additional face time with the lemurs,
depending on participant interest and availability
of someone to let us in to the Lemur Center
It's a rather small crowd this year, so we can be flexible to a
degree. The timing for the trek to Bullock's is pretty fixed
(because they close early), and the start time at the Lemur Center
on Saturday.
See you soon!

Thanks for this! I went to their website to get directions in case I get "lost" in the caravan to the center and they have a "hidden" link for directions and when I called the center no one answered.
Do you by chance have that link or could you possibly get directions from the hotel for us directionally impaired people? LOL
The actual lemur time seems pretty short. Is it shorter than usual? Also, who's coming so far?

No, it's basically the same schedule as normal. We will probably
have quite a bit of time after lunch for lemur-gazing. I believe
there will be a project, but it doesn't sound like they've had a
chance to prepare anything really heavy duty for us so it ought
not to consume a massive amount of time.
> Also, who's coming so far?
It's a short list this year: Keith Arnold, Janet Arnold, Anthony
Brewer, Priscilla Petitti Flores, John Flores, and Vance
Kochenderfer. I was hoping a few more would sign on at the last
minute, but other concerns intervened for them.
Some other events I've been involved with have seen reduced
attendance this year - I guess people are cutting back on travel
in general.
So we will be the few, the proud, the Lemurines.

Not sure exactly what they're referring to, but there is this:
<http://map.duke.edu/?z=2&x=104.94&y=-205.72>. You can also use
the directions to the maintenance shop:
Once you reach the shop, you'll keep going on the gravel road
until you either reach the gate (use the call box if it's closed)
or the large gravel parking lot.
There's also the Google map <http://tinyurl.com/l6jgm3>. Note
that the street they have incorrectly marked as "Rigsbee Road" is
actually named Lemur Lane.

Someday I will get to join you all at the official Lemurcon. In the meantime, I
am fortunate enough to live in San Francisco where we have a really great lemur
exhibit.
I've posted a short video and a couple of pictures (camera phone only, so not
the best, but something is better than nothing) from a recent trip. The video
is really cute. I hope you all enjoy!

Thanks so much for posting these! I will never forget those little guys tugging on my pack ... that was priceless! Good shot of the fox too! I have learned to leave the backpack in the car now - had totally forgotten food was in there! I've been going through my pics and weeding out the bad ones and still have a lot of them to post once I get back home and get online again.

I haven't got all my photos online yet, but here are a couple of videos from last weekend.
Hi everyone-
Sorry for not speaking up earlier; been catching up on work and
sleep this week.
I just wanted to thank all those who came out to Lemurcon this
year - Anthony, Janet, John, Keith, and Priscilla - you are the
reason Lemurcon even exists.
Special thanks to Ken Glander for putting forward the time and
effort out of his weekend to show us around, as well as convincing
two interesting speakers to join us. Not to mention he and Bonnie
serving as such gracious hosts on Saturday night.
Somehow I missed Anthony's original post to the list, but I'll be
collecting together links to everyone's pictures/video in a single
location for easy reference as I become aware of them. Which
reminds me I haven't even looked at my own camera since getting
back.
Until Durham 2010...

Hey folks.
I'm asking an artist friend of mine if she'll do some commissions with lemurs.
Her name is Lora Shelley and she's really great at drawing & painting animals
and she makes hand painted ceramic pendants, finger puppets, hand puppets,
everything.
This is her shop on Zazzle:

She's on Flickr.com too:

I wanted to gauge the interest out there so I can get her motivated to do some
stuff for me and give her some ideas.
Any ideas/suggestions?
