A few follow-on comments: it's tough to tell in advance what the
service project will be. Usually, it's something that really
needs to be done, but nobody has had the time to do yet. A note
on clothing, please make sure you don't wear a white or off-
white shirt on the tour. The technicians always wear white when
feeding the lemurs in the natural habitat enclosures. The idea is
to create an association in the lemurs' minds; human wearing
white=food, human not wearing white=ignore. That way, people
doing observation aren't pestered by hungry lemurs.

Hi, this is my first year for the event, and I'm planning to come in on
Friday.
I'm from Austin, Texas...If the Duke is the hotel where we have rooms, then
that's where I'm staying.

Hi all! Since this my first time going to this "yearly" event, I
don't already know everyone and just want to say hello, see who/how
many are coming, and where you are from. Is everyone arriving
Friday, staying at the Duke?
Also, Vance, have you been given any idea of the service project we
will do?

I've just gotten enough responses that I think I have a good idea of how
many people are planning to stay there. I will call them tomorrow and see
what rate they will give us, then let everyone know. Once that's done,
you'll need to call individually and make reservations (just mention
you're with the group).
Look for answers tomorrow, or Friday at the latest.

OK folks, first off, apologies are in order. It's taken me a couple
weeks longer to get this out than I said it would be. Things have
been pretty hectic at work. I hope it hasn't discouraged you from
going to Lemurcon this year. The interest level so far has been
very high and I think it's going to be a lot of fun.
Anyway, here is the registration form. Please fill it out and mail
it to me as soon as you've made up your mind to go. If I don't
receive your form (and more importantly, your check :) by August 31,
it will make setting up all the arrangements more difficult, so
please stick to this deadline if at all possible.

Registration Form
September 29 - October 1
Full Name(s) of Attendee(s):________________________________________
____________________________________________________________________
Place you're coming from:___________________________________________
E-Mail Address:_____________________________________________________
(note: if you don't check e-mail that frequently, also include a
phone number so I can let you know about any last-minute changes)
I will likely be writing up a summary of the event after
the fact. If for reasons of privacy you do not want to [ ]
be named in this, please check at right:
The official hotel will be the Carolina Duke Motor Inn at
the intersection of I-85 and Guess Road. It's a nice clean
place with a pool and very reasonably priced (about $45 for [ ]
two people?). If enough people stay there, we'll get a group
rate. If you plan to stay there, please check at right:
Registration Fees:
Participation Fee - $40 x [ ] people = $_________
(100% of this goes to DUPC)
Saturday's Lunch - $10 x [ ] people = $_________
T-Shirt (S - XL) - $12 x [ ] shirts = $_________
(indicate sizes wanted, children's available)
T-Shirt (XXL) - $13 x [ ] shirts = $_________
(sorry, these cost more to get made) ===========
TOTAL $_________
The participation fee is required, all others are optional, though
it's probably a good idea to spring for the lunch (DUPC is a little
out of the way). Be sure to let me know if you have any special
dietary requirements, e.g. vegetarian.
Make checks payable to Vance Kochenderfer. If you are nervous
that I might run off with all the loot, you can make out two
checks; one to DUPC for the participation fee, and one to me
for the t-shirts and food (DUPC isn't involved in setting that
part up). Any checks written to DUPC won't be cashed right away;
I'll take them along with me to Lemurcon, so don't let your account
balance run low in the meantime!

The following is a *tentative* schedule. Start and end times for each
day are pretty solid, but all the ones in between are no more than
guesses at this point. The order of tours, etc. will be rearranged
as well. But it's a start.
FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 29
5:00 PM - Dinner at Bullock's Bar-B-Q or other local cuisine
7:00 PM - Go to DUPC for tour of natural habitat enclosures.
8:30 PM - Presentation, e.g. slide show (???)
SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 30
9:30 AM - Gather at DUPC.
10:00 AM - Morning tours (NHE's, outdoor cages, triplex?)
Noon - Lunch
1:00 PM - Chance for people in Adopt-a-Lemur to visit their
adoptees.
1:30 PM - Afternoon Tours (Nocturnal Building, indoor cages)
3:00 PM - Volunteer service project for those not yet
conquered by the North Carolina heat.
4:30/5 PM - Return to hotel to refresh.
6:30/7 PM - Dinner at local restaurant
Later - Whatever people feel like doing (bowling, tea party?)
SUNDAY, OCTOBER 1
9:30/10 AM - End-of-con breakfast at Honey's Restaurant.
11:00 AM - Local sightseeing/relaxing by pool/whatever with
whomever is remaining.
3/4 PM - Last remaining people filter away. FIN.
E-mail is probably the best way to get in touch with me. I'll be
out of town a lot between July 14 - 29, but will be home pretty
much continuously after that.
Again, sorry about the delay. Let me know if you have any questions.

So far, this is what it looks like (note that the "Yes" column also

No Yes Prefer Total
Sept 15-17: 5 17 5 22
Sept 29-Oct 1: 2 20 8 22
Unless these results change significantly by Sunday, I'm setting the

If memory serves me right, in 1995 we had at least one kid along. They
are certainly welcome, although you need to keep the following
considerations in mind:
-You'll have to supervise them. Neither the Primate Center nor the
Lemurcon "staff" (i.e., me and anyone else who's helping) will be
able to provide any form of babysitting.
-We will be walking around in the 10+ acre Natural Habitat Enclosures.
It's not too strenuous, but very small children will need to be
carried (hope you're in shape!) or kept back at the main building
with an adult while the rest of the group tours the NHEs.
-Even people like me without children know that some are better
behaved than others. If yours are likely to be disruptive, the
rest of the Lemurcon attendees will thank you if they stay at home.
So I'll leave it to you to consider these factors when deciding.
I hope it doesn't sound like I'm discouraging people from bringing
children, as I think most of them (especially if they are interested
in animals) will have a good time and learn a great deal.
As for the volunteer project, it usually involves manual labor,
but I'm sure they'll be able to participate in some way.

Hello everybody!
The date for Lemurcon 2000 has been narrowed down to two choices:
the weekend of September 15, 16, 17 or the weekend of September 29,
30, and October 1.
If you're interested in attending, head on down to
<http://www.nyx.net/~vkochend/lc2kdate.html> and let me know which
dates are acceptable. Once I have a good idea of when everyone is
available, I'll nail down some of the details and put out an
official announcement of the date, cost, and tentative schedule
of events.
E-mail me if you have trouble with the form.

Linda,
Thanks for asking the question about the children! From what I have read
about the other events, it has not included children. OK guys...what do you
think? I am homeschooling my youngest one, who is also a Lemur fan. We have
a little stuffed ring-tail on top of our computer at this very minute! Might

If he doesn't get back to you immediately, it's because he's leaving the
country either today or over the weekend, and will be gone (at a guess, I

Hi all...
I'm behind on email, what's new? I had almost forgotten I subscribed to the
LemurCon list since I hadn't heard anything in forever! I haven't been to
one, yet, but I would love to attend LemurCon 2000!
for dates, my bday is 25 Aug, so I think having Lemurcon the last weekend
in August would be a memorable birthday present *grin* but if late
September is the general consensus and works for the most people, it's fine
by me...just let me know dates, and any other weekend stuff will get
planned around it ;-)
Vance - thanks for offering to coordinate...I've coordinated events before,
I know it can be a bit of an undertaking...let me know if I can help with
any of the smaller tasks :-)
oh, and I don't read the alt.fan.lemurs newsgroup, so please send any
lemurcon updates to the mailing list or to me directly, thanks :-)

This is also a good time to bring up the subject of Lemurcon. For
those of you who don't know, Lemurcon is an annual (usually) gathering
of alt.fan.lemurs readers and anyone else interested. It is held over
a weekend in the Spring or Autumn at the Primate Center.
Lemurcon includes the following:
- A *very* extensive tour of the center
- One or more presentations on some aspect of lemur study
- A service project to benefit the center
- Fellowship with other lemur fanatics and the chance to eat
some damn fine barbecue
When does Lemurcon take place? Well, there's the rub. Because it
is loosely organized, there is no predefined date. It depends on
a number of factors, including the weather, availability of Primate
Center staff, and generally when people feel like going.
So I'm asking - who is interested in going this year, and when are
you available? I think that it's too late to plan something before
the summer heat arrives, so late August or September is our best
bet. I am willing to coordinate.
Please post here in alt.fan.lemurs and e-mail me if you are
interested.
