Actually, I would suggest you open a terminal and do
$ su
Password:
# apt-get update
(stuff........)
# apt-get upgrade
Then let us know what it says.
Of course, if you are using Ubuntu or any deb based distro, you would do simply
$ sudo apt-get update
.......
$ sudo apt-get upgrade
