Hi,
My confidence in Linux is hanging by a thread and only my drive to get
rid of Windows is keeping it alive. What's wrong?
Have tried several times for the past weeks to upgrade all packages
(mark all upgrades via Synaptic and/or install KDE, but all I get is
"Failed"...
Some of the files do download, so my Internet connection is ok.
Any solutions for this?
Thanks so much in advance

Being a linguist I am not aware about configuring XKB, Locale etc in Linux. But one of my friend a computer engineer gave me some hints in written format which I have attached herewith.
My intention to configure ne_NP system in your OS is very simple. Hindi, Nepali, Maithli and Sanskrit languages are written in Devanagari. FOSS communities are increasing in this territory and they are giving emphasis on translation as well localization. If Nepali input and locale system is covered by this OS a great number of South Asian people can use this system including a huge number of Nepali, Hindi and Sanskrit language workers.

Greetings Laxmi,
Linguas OS is based on PCLinuxOS and will only have whatever
localizations are available therein, I'm afraid.
Implementing such a thing is a bit beyond my skills.
If it is available for PCLinuxOS, it should be available for us,
but, otherwise, I regret that there is little I can do.
LinguasOS is essentially a remaster of their system.
I can write some tcl programs, bash scripts, compile an iso, configure
my system, etc., but, haven't a clue how to install another language in
a system, if it is not available in the apt repos.
At the same time, I have been considering attempting to build an apt
repo for linguas os, only with the packages that are not already
available in PCLinuxOS (such as those I've written, Esperantilo which
I'm adding in, Bitext2tmx, etc.).
Perhaps there are means of adding languages to such a repo.
Of course, the availability of such a repo would be in the distant
future, since I am just now considering the idea and researching how it
is to be done (all of this is a learning experience for me).
I've learned a little about Sanskrit and Tibetan (I studied comparative
religions as a minor in college, and have practiced with the karma kagyu
school of tibetan buddhism), but know nothing of Nepali, I am afraid.
In any case, I do appreciate your kind words.
Perhaps you will be able to assist me in learning to implement
additional localizations and languages, so, stick around!

Thank you for your inspiring work. As a translator I am interested in Machine added translation. My native language is Nepali. Some months ago when I installed Lingua OS in my PC I could not configure Nepali input and locale. If you can manage these things It would be very nice. Nepali locale and input system for Linux is located here http://nepalinux.org http://nepalinux.org/input http://nepalinux.org/ldf/ne_NP http://nepalinux.org/fonts

I have been working on making new LinguasOS isos.
Synaptic/apt is giving me woes, though.
I'm trying to update all the packages before remastering the system,
and, as is often the case with PCLinuxOS, for reasons unknown to me, it
is having trouble fetching packages from some repos.
I hate that.
Usually if I keep trying, eventually I get everything.
As soon as I have everything, I will remaster.
But, Most of it is already updated, including some package line-up changes:
Added <a
href="http://www.xdobry. de/esperantoedit /index_en. html">Esperantilo< /a>
Removed xfmedia
Added gxine and xmms
Added <a href="http://www.baldwins oftware.com">TclUP and TclScreen</a>
(not that either has much to do with translation, but an FTP tools is
quite frequently useful.)
Updated the other applications I wrote, such as <a
href="http://www.baldwins oftware.com">TickleDict,
TickleText</ a> and <a href="http://www.transpro calc.org</a>.
Added <a href="http://www.suckless .org/programs/ slock.html">slock</a>.
Removed ActiveState' s Tcl8.5, and installed regular old tlc8.5,
since, to be for sure, I should not be redistributing ActiveState' s package.
Added new wallpapers and fluxbox themes...very important...
Basically, it will have nearly everything I've recently done to my
laptop, although, I am building
it on my experimental box, as before. (Laptop has Last.fm client, and a
few other things I am
not adding to the iso, but, otherwise... )
One thing I am still pondering is whether to remove the OmegaT
from PCLinuxOS repos, which is 1.7.2, and install OmegaT 1.8.0.
1.8.0 is a huge improvement, and that's all I'm using, but, I consider
that it is useful to have the apt-able program there.
I don't know.
I have considered attempting to build an apt repo at linguasos.org
just for packages I write, and a few other things not available in the
PCLinuxOS repos (such as bitext2tmx and esperantilo) , and things they
don't keep up with (OmegaT)...That may prove difficult, however, since
I can't get a shell on the server...
But if I can figure out a way around that, I could add said repo
to the apt repos list in Linguas OS and simplify keeping my packages
up to date, and some of these other matters.
I am considering moving my hosting, too.
I paid for a whole year on the server where linguasos.org is now, but,
I think once that's up, I will seek hosting where I can get a shell.
I've found hosts that offer even more bandwidth and space for
comparable, if not better, prices.
I will announce everywhere once new isos are available for download.

There is a survey on translatorsdirectory.com about which operation
system you use primarily for work.
I think I'm the only participant so far to choose linux (1% of the 57

Xmms is at
/usr/bin/xmms
You can start it various ways.
Open a terminal (like sakura or mrxvt or xterm), and simply type xmms
and enter.
Open fbrun (run program) and type xmms and enter.
Or, add an entry to your fluxbox menu
The menu is in /home/yourusername/.fluxbox
(notice the . there in .fluxbox. You can only see this folder if you
choose "view hidden files" in your
file manager (thunar).
The menu is a simple text file. To add xmms, just add this:
[exec] (XMMS) {/usr/bin/xmms}
and you will have an entry for xmms in your menu.
I would stick that in the "audio/video" submenu area.
For any other software you have installed, you also have to add it to
the menu (this does not
occur automagically for fluxbox).
Most of these programs end up in /usr/bin, but, it's a good idea to
determine where they are (some will end
up in /usr/share or /usr/games or /usr/sbin or other places, too).
Let's consider, for example, that you install Scribus using synaptic
(it's a DTP program, creates pdf files).
You would open your terminal and type
whereis scribus
You will get an answer like this
scribus: /usr/bin/scribus /usr/lib/scribus /usr/share/scribus
/usr/share/man/man1/scribus.1.bz2
See? /usr/bin/scribus (the other entries are libraries and manual
pages, etc.)
So, you would add an entry to your fluxbox menu like this:
[exec] (Scribus) {/usr/bin/scribus}
I wrote a script and stuck it somewhere to facilitate that process, but,
I don't recall where I stuck it or called it.

Open Synaptic, click search, type kde, enter.
Choose kde base system and any other kde goodies that look good.
Click apply.
Really, as much as I like Linguas OS, I know it isn't the most userfriendly.
If you have the bandwidth and a dvd burner, you might try PCLOS-Trans.
Ubuntu is awesome, too.
Of course, dealing with something that doesn't hold your hand for you is
likely
to cause you to learn a few things.
Frustrating when all you want to do is get your work done, sure, but,
learning is fun, no?
Let me know if you have further questions.

Exactly right! I am one of those "soon hope to be ex Windows users",
but at this point I would not dare putting my business on the line...
An example:
After downloading (or installing...) the Winamp "clone" XMMS, it did
not appear in the menu, nor could I find any program file to paste
into that menu editing thing. I can only play music when I right click
a file and choose "Play in XMMS". Same goes for all the software I

To resolve this problem I thought I might install KDE and that's where
things became frustrating and drove me to write this post. I mean, I
am not a computer expert nor a fan of any OS whatsoever. I just want
things to be simple without codes (believe me I tried, error message
every single time). I installed OS on an old Pentium III, 512 MB
system and it runs far better than Windows. But please please make it
more userfriendly!! It is possible: I installed XMMS in Mandriva on an
other (more powerfull) system without any problems or code.
So my question for now is: how do I change to KDE?
Thanks,
Marco,
The last release of TransProCalc has been up for about a month and half,
and, just
today, someone wrote to me and pointed out a minor bug in the install.sh
script.
It was doing cd to /usr/loca/bin to change permissions, instead of
/usr/local/bin...
I'm amazed that nobody had pointed it out sooner, since, according to
sourceforge, 100 people
have downloaded that version since it was released.
Anyway, I fixed the install script.
I also have projectdocs, assign, and financial all packed into a tabbed
notebook now,
and the calculator moved off to it's own, toplevel window.
That, and a little code cleanup and improved commenting therein are the
only enhancements
in the release I have just posted.
I've been working on writing in the necessary code to round all the
financial numbers, but, haven't completed
so, it's not part of this release.
I'm hoping to have that done by the end of this month, and will be
releasing again.
I'm also going to add a fourth report, a report that includes
information from all three windows.
As it is, I usually make on by copy/pasting parts of the three existing
reports together, so, I figure
it would be useful to others, too, to have this one report.
I'm also thinking about adding an invoice generator, although, I imagine
that most folks
already have their own method for generating invoices.
I could even add export of the invoice to pdf format.
What do you think of that idea?
I would like to write in some user configuration...you know, saving the
user's pertinent information for the purposes
of generating said invoices, and, also, the ability to save information
for clients, and, thus, a fourth tab in the notebook for
a client info input dialog, where one can enter, then save information
for each client, such as address info, etc.,
to sort of build a client database for transprocalc.
My intention was to work on some of these items this week, in fact, and
not to post a new release until these
items were completed, but, since the install script needed attention, I
figured I'd at least amend that little issue,
and, since the tabbed/notebook feature was already completed and in use
here, I figured I'd release it as such.
So, there you have it: TransProCalc 0.8 is up.
Enjoy.
When I get these other features written in , I'll be releasing 1.0
Anyone want to come on board and help code some of this stuff in?
Any ideas or feedback, too, are always welcome and appreciated.
be well,
tony

There are many things that I really and truly dig about fluxbox, and,
despite having three other window managers installed on this machine,
continue, now, to use it as my default window manager.
I also have FVWM (not for the uninitiated), KDE (probably the most user
friendly and feature rich window manager for X, but a bit bloated, IMHO.
I used this for 8 years, until finding fluxbox), and, now, Joe's Window
Manager, or jwm.
Now, I believe I will made JWM the default on the next release of
Linguas OS, which I hope to be updating soon.
JWM is even lighter and quicker than fluxbox, if you can believe that,
but, is also easily configurable to appear more like certain popular
proprietary system guis, including your usual start button menu, etc.
For a sneak-peak at Linguas OS with JWM, and more information, click here:
http://tonytraductor.livejournal.com/22341.html
I have recently made a number of improvements to TransProCalc, which
will be appearing on the next release.
The next release will also include the latest Tickle Dictionary, also
with enhancements, OmegaT 1.8 with spellchecking and all the new
grooviness therein, Ray's latest release of bitext2tmx, and, basically
all the goodies it now includes, with possible additions or modifications.
Of course, upon installation to the hard drive, either fluxbox or
KDE or XFCE or Gnome will be options for a desktop window manager,
along with the thousands of other packages available to download and
install for free with Synaptics or apt.
Enough rambling for now...I have lotso work at the moment.
be well,

I should clarify something.
I'm simply talking about a webportal to use as a home page (like
my.yahoo.com
or terra.com or viola.fr, etc.)
where I can read the news, see the weather, check e-mail online, search,
etc.
I've been using yahoo for that forever, it seems.
I'm not talking about hosting.
I use several hosts, all paid. http://www.linguaso s.org is hosted at godaddy.com
(www.transprocalc. org forwards to a page on the same account) http://www.baldwinl inguas.com is hosted with my proz.com account http://www.photodha rma.com (my art & photography) is hosted at dwhs.net
I have to say that I probably like dwhs.net best...linux server, the usual
cpanel tools, with extras, decent pricing, etc.
Support's a bit slow, there, though.
I have a lot more space on godaddy, but the tools suck.
Their support is pretty responsive, though. You can phone them 24/7.
My hosting on proz has the usual cpanel tools, etc, too, but it's a
small account,
enough for hosting baldwinlinguas. com, of course, which is all I
need/use it for,
for professional purposes.
thanks for the tip, all the same

I never thought of doing it on my machine.
I wasn't aware this was possible with a dynamic ip.
Of course, I have hosting space at godaddy.com and dwhs.net
where I host linguasos.org and photodharma.com, respectively,
and, I have though of simply building my own little portal page
with the rss news feeds I want, links to the various webmail
services I use, search, etc.
I have also just within the past 24 hours though of setting up
a public portal, and find that there are plenty of FOSS applications
to install to a server and build one, but, I think that would require
tonso hosting space, and I don't want to shell out the cash to
do it, since, I wouldn't want to expect to make any money on it.
I had built a portal for teachers some years ago, while teaching,
with it's own webmail and all that (but using free services like
everyone.net or zapzone).
That site is gone now, but, prior to using yahoo, it was my home page.

Ever consider taking matters completely into your own hands?
That is, run your own web server and never be at the mercy of some online
service. There is no need to pay for anything if you already pay for internet
service. You have a bidirectional connection, therefore you can run your own
as long as people can find it.
It is relatively easy to do, depending upon what hardware/software and internet
connection you have.
Once you have your side of things set up, all you need to do is sign up to one
of
the various dynamic IP redirection services (free), if you do not have a static
IP,
and periodically run an application on your side to update the IP address.

I use several hosts, all paid.
http://www.linguasos.org is hosted at godaddy.com
(www.transprocalc.org forwards to a page on the same account)
http://www.baldwinlinguas.com is hosted with my proz.com account
http://www.photodharma.com (my art & photography) is hosted at dwhs.net
I have to say that I probably like dwhs.net best...linux server, the usual
cpanel tools, with extras, decent pricing, etc.
Support's a bit slow, there, though.
I have a lot more space on godaddy, but the tools suck.
Their support is pretty responsive, though. You can phone them 24/7.
My hosting on proz has the usual cpanel tools, etc, too, but it's a
small account,
enough for hosting baldwinlinguas.com, of course, which is all I
need/use it for,
for professional purposes.
thanks for the tip, all the same

I am mostly using German or European providers. One.com is one of these, which I found quite good (and reasonable priced), but there are others out there who may even be cheaper.

I use a paid webspace. IMHO free webhosters are crammed with ads and floating layers and what else they use to distract readers from the real content of a site.
I would consider paying for that service. There are numerous hosters out there who charge very little for a basic webspace.

I'm looking for a new home page, since, it appears, Yahoo, which I have used for some years now as my home page, will soon belong to the BEAST of Redmond.
I considered www.terra.com, but it offers absolutely no user customization. I considered netscrape, but, I'm no fan of AOL. To tell the truth, AT&T can bite my arse, anyway, and Yahoo! and AT&T are currently enmeshed.... not sure who owns who or how that works, but, I was once happily an SNET (Souther New England Telephone) customer, and then sbcglobal bought snet, and then yahoo bought sbcglobal, and then AT&T somehow got in there, and that's about the time I dumped them and moved everything over to comcast (except my home page...funny. ..it's never occured to me to use the comcast.net portal as my home page...). So, I've been looking around.
I found something pretty cool: http://www.myway. com (and, of course http://my.myway. com ). It is a portal, much like my.yahoo.com, but, has far fewer annoying ads (like those darned java and flash ones that pop-up over stuff you're trying to read...in fact, they promise: no pop-ups, ever.) Their search is powered by ask.com, which is a good search engine, really. I like the fact that the layouts and pages design are quick simple, like yahoo was before they started pusing the NEW my yahoo and mail options, etc., too. You can edit your news preferences, choose the content you want, see your weather, get a free mail acct, movie listings, stocks, sports scores, etc., etc., pretty well everything yahoo offers. I can even see tv listings for my favorite TV channels (scifi, history, discovery, etc.) I confess, some of the options are limited. They have fewer
news sources, so, I can't get news from sources all over the world in the four languages I speak, as I could at yahoo, but, for most people that's a non-issue.
So, for the moment, that's what I've chosen. http://my.myway. com will, from this day forward, be my home page, unless I can find one with more international options. I might add uol.com.br, viola.fr and terra.com in tabs, and bookmark all four as my home page. I can do that in Firefox...a group of tabs for my home page...maybe. ..
Then again, I'm still thinking of exploring the options with google, since one can build oneself a home page on google, too. Gmail sucks, though, IMHO.

It is a portal, much like my.yahoo.com, but, has far fewer annoying ads
(like those darned java and flash ones
that pop-up over stuff you're trying to read...in fact, they promise: no
pop-ups, ever.)
Their search is powered by ask.com, which is a good search engine, really.
I like the fact that the layouts and pages design are quick simple, like
yahoo was before
they started pusing the NEW my yahoo and mail options, etc., too.
You can edit your news preferences, choose the content you want, see
your weather,
get a free mail acct, movie listings, stocks, sports scores, etc., etc.,
pretty well everything yahoo offers.
I can even see tv listings for my favorite TV channels (scifi, history,
discovery, etc.)
I confess, some of the options are limited. They have fewer news
sources, so, I can't
get news from sources all over the world in the four languages I speak,
as I could at yahoo, but,
for most people that's a non-issue.
So, for the moment, that's what I've chosen.
http://my.myway.com will, from this day forward, be my home page,
unless I can find one with more international options.
I might add uol.com.br, viola.fr and terra.com in tabs, and bookmark all
four as my home page.
I can do that in Firefox...a group of tabs for my home page...maybe...
Then again, I'm still thinking of exploring the options with google,
since one can
build oneself a home page on google, too.
Gmail sucks, though, IMHO.
So, what's your homepage?

The sender of the message below (Laxm) is not a member of our group.
This person has managed to find a way to spam EVERY existing Yahoo! group
with their message.
Additionally, I ask that you do not view the contents of our group on
Grouply.
Grouply works by hosting the content of Yahoo! groups on its own servers.
It requires Grouply members to hand over their IDs and passwords to
Grouply.
And once a member of a Yahoo! group becomes a Grouply member,
the content of that Yahoo! group becomes available to other Grouply users,
even if the Yahoo! group concerned is a private one.
Even though the Linguas OS group is public, this is in my view (and the
view of many other Yahoo!
group moderators) unacceptable breach of privacy and relinquishment of
control over the group.
Thanks,
Anthony Baldwin

Since we all use Yahoo Groups to receive messages from this group, I thought I would let you know about a free service I found called Grouply. It is the best way I've discovered to access messages from all my Yahoo Groups. You can use this link to sign up: http://www.grouply.com/register.php?tmg=123078.
I am a member of so many groups that I found it very difficult to keep up with all of them. Grouply makes it easy. You can search and browse across all your groups at once and even view a cross-group event calendar. You can have one Smart Digest email (which I love) sent to you at the end of each day that summarizes what's going on across all your groups, highlighting what's interesting to you and hiding what's not.
I've found Grouply to be a huge time-saver for me and I thought it would also be helpful for others. Enjoy!
I'm going to be making updates to the Linguas OS iso again, shortly.
I will be:
- updating the TransProCalc to the newest release (since it now saves
projects and has
had other important enhancements, http://www.transprocalc.org ), as well
as other tools
I've been building, like Tickle Dict and Tickle Text.
- adding Anaphraseus (formerly "OpenWordFast"), a CAT tool built of
OpenOffice macros.
Other stuff on the todo list:
- translation of the site, documentation, etc. to more languages (hint,
hint).
Any other suggestions?
Can anyone assist me in making a bootable USB stick with Linguas OS?
Thanks
Tony

I localized TickleText to Brazilian Portuguese today, and added features.
Now, TickleText is completely "themeable", has an integrated dictionary,
and has many other features (haven't yet uploaded this version in English,
but will, likely, before the day is out).
Many of the new features are only available to *nix users.
I would deeply appreciate it if someone (who speaks Portuguese, of course),
would download and test it out for me.
um abraço!

TickleText now has all kinds of groOvy features it did not previously have.
It shows line numbers, can insert a date, count your words, goto line #,
insert special characters
(well, okay, you open the special character dialog and copy/paste them in),
open multiple windows, open an xterm, open a browser...
Everything has key-bindings for short-cuts.
Fun stuff.
All today, I did that stuff...
Check it out at freshmeat, sourceforge or
http://www.linguasos.org/tcltext.html
I've done some work on tpcalc, too, but haven't gotten around to
uploading anything yet.
Not sure...I might wait until I get this xml thing figured out so it
will save/reopen projects.
Maybe.
I dunno.

Okay, so, it tries to boot Linguas OS but gets stuck?
But you can boot to Ubuntu and Windows?
Would you be able to post what the actual error message is?
I think that would be helpful.
Linguas OS should be formatted as ext3, but, so is Ubuntu,
so, I'm not sure what the problem is.
It's not a error19?
Error 19 would just mean you didn't tell it where the kernel is, properly.
That's easy to fix.
Why it should have any problem with ext3 file system is beyond me, at
the moment.
Perhaps with the actual error message I could do a bit of digging and
figure it out.
If all else fails, I would just re-install LinguasOS, and this time,
pass the proper
parameters to grub, at the end.
I could walk you through that part easily enough.
Then it would have grub written correctly to boot all three.
Let me know.
Thanks,
