(If the letters "DMOZ" mean nothing to you, hit the delete key!)

I made a small but hopefully welcome improvement in Xenu's Link
Sleuth: if a link comes from the Mozilla Open Directory, the context
menu (right mouse key) allows to launch the edit URL(s). This came as
a request from a DMOZ editor who has to work on thousands of links.

The (beta test) file can be found here:

I have added another interesting feature to the current beta version at
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/linksleuthupdates/files/xenu.zip

When you scan local files, you can now get more features when clicking
the right mouse key. I.e. you can launch a HTML editor, a Graphics
viewer, etc, like you can when you view such files in the Windows
Explorer.

I have added another interesting feature to the current beta version at
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/linksleuthupdates/files/xenu.zip

This version does check local links ("#") within internal files. However
these links are, at this time, only checked locally. I do not (yet)
check for a link to a second file + "#target", only *within* a file. I
may improve this in the future, i.e. that it will check "#" links when
they are between two "internal" files.

The result of this check is only in the report, not in the Xenu window.

Many people have asked me for this feature, so I hope it is useful and
will help you to improve your websites.

Subject: Xenu beta version that can detect remote orphan files
geo4497
Send Email Send Email

I've made a Xenu version that can detect *remote* orphans.
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/linksleuthupdates/files/XENU.ZIP
This is currently just a test - when doing the report, you get a
dialogbox that asks you to enter

hostname (e.g. ftp.host.com)
user
password
directory (e.g. "public_html")

of the ftp directory where you upload your stuff.

Because this is just a "beta", you will be asked every time you request
a report to enter these. The data (including the password) is not stored
in a *.XEN file or in the XENU.INI file. The data is used *only* to
access your ftp server and only to *read* your directories, nothing
more.

I tested it for my site, and I was absolutely amazed that I have so many
orphan files.

If you are trying it, tell me how it works. Note: it may report "default
files" like "index.html" as "orphans" if they are not linked
specifically. That isn't a fault, that's a feature :-)

Of course, the orphan feature works only if it is enabled in the Options
Dialogbox.

People have complained about Xenu accepting and storing tons of cookies.
This is a pain for the people who run a "cookie filtering" software.
While I don't really know about the technicalities of cookies, I made a
small but hopefully important change so that Xenu will no longer store
cookies. For those who are software developers: OpenRequest() now uses
the flag INTERNET_FLAG_NO_COOKIES.

geo4497
Send Email Send Email

Again and again, users wrote me with the phenomenon that Xenu keeps one
or two pending URLs as "busy" for a very long time, maybe even forever.
The result is that it isn't possible to end Xenu except through the task
manager.

I believe that it is "not my problem", i.e. the fault of WININET.DLL.
But we never know... Since I never experienced this myself (apparently
it happens with XP, but I use ME), I'd like to invite people who have
experienced this often to contact me. I would provide a Xenu version
that does lots of debug outputs into a file, so to see whether the
requests really "hang" in the WININET.DLL or whether it's my fault.

Thanks to all the people who contacted me about the endless-busy-bug :-)

I will make that debug version sometime next week, and upload it in the
file area, and announce it here in the list.

In the meantime a suggestion for those who experience this bug very
frequently - try to set the amount of threads to 5, instead of the
default of 30. I have set it to 5 for me since I switched to DSL,
because I was getting TONS of timeouts (but never "endless busy"). In
the "old days" in 1997, I was running Xenu with 70 threads on a dial-up
connection.

I have uploaded a debug version for the Xenu endless-busy-bug. It can be
found at
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/linksleuthupdates/files/xenub.zip

Here's how to use it:
The software writes into the file XENULOG.TXT in your TEMP directory
(e.g. \WINDOWS\TEMP, but may be different on NT, W2K and XP). You can
delete that file safely after work.

If you experience the endless-busy-bug, send me that file after Xenu
ends (or after you have "killed" him), and mention what URL was left.

What I am attempting to do is to see whether it really "hangs" within
WININET.DLL, or not.

Do also mention to me (even if you told me already):

- The Operating Systen you are using (W95, W98, WME, WNT, W2K, WXP)
- The version of IE you are using
- Whether you are using a proxy
- Whether you are using a personal firewall
- What connection you have (Dialup, DSL, Cable, Corporate LAN)

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/linksleuthupdates/files/xenub.zip

This version has been improved slightly. There is now a new Button on
the toolbar: STOP. This works in a "stronger" way than the PAUSE button
- try it and tell me about. It is not perfect - it won't stop threads
where the system tries to find the IP address of the host. The STOP
button only works after the PAUSE button has been pressed.

What you can also do, is to set a smaller timeout value for Internet
Explorer (of which WININET.DLL is a part of, whether you like it or
not):

1. Start the Registry Editor
2. Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \
CurrentVersion \ InternetSettings
3. Select New > DWORD from the Edit menu
4. Call it ReceiveTimeout with a data value of SECONDS*1000
5. Restart your computer

For example, if you want the timeout to be 1 minute, set the
ReceiveTimeout data value to 60000 (60 * 1000)

The default is 5 minutes.

I have uploaded yet another debug version at
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/linksleuthupdates/files/xenub.zip
that can detect timeouts. You set the timeout in XENU.INI

[Options]
timeout=60

60 is the default value, so it is there even if you're lazy and you set
nothing :-)

Because I haven't received much feedback, the debug trace (XENULOG.TXT)
is still in that version.

So if you like Xenu and are courageous and want to support me, try out
that version at
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/linksleuthupdates/files/xenub.zip
and tell me if you still have "endless-busy-sites".

The timeouts are not reported as such, they appear as "invalid handle"
or as "operation cancelled".

Someone asked me whether this Xenu beta has something to do with the new
Verisign behaviour (hijacking of all undefined *.com and *.net domains,
see http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/6/32852.html ). No, it has
nothing to do with it.

What can you do?

You can set the options so that redirections are treated as errors, or
you can look in the report for the redirections to see any links to
http://sitefinder.verisign.com .

I might detect these bogus redirections with not too much work, and then
report "no such host". However, I still have the hope that the internet
community will force Verisign to stop its current behaviour.

Some people have written me about files created with WORD 2000 that have
broken links to *.xml and *.mso files. This microsoft tool might be
helpful to clean up HTML files:

Office 2000 HTML Filter 2.0

I have not tried it myself, because I almost never use WORD 2000 to

is useful. If it is, I'll make a link to it on the FAQ page.

A new beta version of Xenu's Link Sleuth can be found in the yahoo file
area:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/linksleuthupdates/files/

It is bigger because it has a real setup and uninstall, thanks to
InnoSetup 4.1.8, which I began to try earlier this year.

It has been tested on Windows 98 and on Windows XP Home, but not on XP
Professional. It does not have a feature "install for this user" /
"install for all users". If you know how to do this with InnoSetup, tell
me. And no, don't tell me to switch to another Setup software.

I have fixed a nasty bug related to automatically sending the report by
mail. The bug resulted in the report being sent several times, and/or
Xenu crashing.

I have improved the context menu to give quick access to the Google
Cache and to the Wayback Machine. This is useful when doing research on
a broken link. I like and use it a lot :-)

I changed the way "file://" URLs are shown - they are now shown with "/"
instead of "\", because one user complained that URLs with "\" wouldn't
display properly in Opera.

Plus some minor improvements, see the WHATSNEW.TXT file.

[If you do not know what a "parser" is, you can delete this message]

Hello,

The parser I use for Xenu's Link Sleuth is pretty basic and I'm almost
ashamed for it :-) Because I did take a course in syntax analysis for
one semester, and have owned the book "Compiler Construction" by Prof.
Niklaus Wirth for many years.

Xenu's parser isn't really a real parser, it's just something "quick and
dirty". Does anyone know a source code for a HTML parser that has all
the newer parts of the language, and that is easy to use?

What I'd like is something where I can "get into" to include my own
little components, i.e. through callbacks, or by simply modifying parts
of the code. This way I could handle the "id=" part, which I don't
support at this time because it can happen everywhere.

Like Prof. Wirth, I prefer non-table based syntax analysis.

Subject: Displaying "foreign" charsets in the Xenu window

For years, people have complained that page titles with "foreign"
charsets aren't displayed correctly in the Xenu window. A new beta
version is solving this problem. You can get it here:
http://home.snafu.de/tilman/tmp/xenubeta.zip

With that version, I was able to display chinese, korean, arabic,
russian, japanese, greek and indian(!) websites.

I don't know if Xenu will work correctly in these countries itself.

Anyway, I uploaded a new beta. Mail me if it doesn't work properly.
