Linux Dell Laptop Users:

	 I was attempting to assist a friend today install the Nvidia
drivers on an I8100 with RedHat 7.2 (totally updated using up2date), and
the latest NVIDIA drivers.

	 I have attached a few of the pertinent files to this email if
anyone can help me to see what is wrong. Take into consideration that I
have on my own machine made the NVIDIA 32MB card work with a 1600x1200
display (which is the same as the friend I have).

	 Any ideas?

It was unintential once I saw the size of the email. I do apologize.

Now I found just the opposite. I am running SuSE 7.3 Professional on a Latitude C800 and I had the same lock up problem. Any time I connected or disconnected the AC Power the machine would lock up. I downloaded 2.4.16-SuSE from the SuSE web site and compiled with ACPI in place of APM.

There are a few inconveniences, such as no battery indicator applet, but it is better then locking up whenever I try and move around .... which is the whole idea behind having a laptop.

The only way to be sure that your problem is not due to APIC or ACPI, is to
compile the kernel yourself. I'm not the right person to ask for how to do
this (I've never used RH or any of the distros with rpm's).

I did as the FAQ suggests: put "disableapic disableacpi" at the

The /etc/pcmcia/config.opts file also seems alright. Do you
have further suggestions?

I sees this in the log:

(II) Module nv: vendor="The XFree86 Project"
         compiled for 4.1.0, module version = 1.0.1
         Module class: XFree86 Video Driver
         ABI class: XFree86 Video Driver, version 0.4

but this in the config:

         #Driver "nv"
         Driver "nvidia"

According to the log, you're loading the 'nv' driver that comes with X,
not Nvidia's driver. My log has:
(II) Module nvidia: vendor="NVIDIA Corporation"
         compiled for 4.0.2, module version = 1.0.2802
         Module class: XFree86 Video Driver

I'm not sure why your config didn't load the correct driver. Did you not
try it again after the last config save?

Hi Rob,

    On two different I8100s at our observatory we saw a machine
hang under linux and then after trying to reboot refuse to recognize
the hard disk or the CDROM. This condition persisted from
10-30 minutes and a dozen or so reboots. After the Dell
initialization it
just gave a missage about a "missing disk" and failed. In a
BIOS FAQ Dell claimed that this was a problem in A03 that was
fixed in A04. We upgraded all 5 of our I8100s to A07 and
haven't seen this problem yet in 3 months. Knock on wood.
In all other regards A07 seems to work well with both Linux
and Win2k. I'd recommend it. Ciao,

It seems that you told linux to use a non-english Keyboard layout. Is
this the same in X and on the console? In X, you have to change the line
in XF86Config now beeing
Option          "XkbLayout"    "xx"

with xx being, e.g., "de" for Germany, into
Option          "XkbLayout"    "us"

(the british use the same layout, don't they?). On the console it's more
difficult, because it depends on the distribution, and I don't use
RedHat.

This isnt a dell specific questions but this group has such a great
response that I thought I would ask here.

I have a i81k with the built in network/modem combo. I use the
network card at home and at work. I also occasionally use a wireless
nic at home. at home I am running on the 192.168.1 subnet but at the
office I am running 10.10.1. So I need to have the nic card using
dhcp so it can get the correct ip address when it boots up.

Here is the problem that i have. When I am not connected to a
network my box takes forever to load because it waits for dhcp to
time out(i am guessing). So what I am looking for is a way to not
have that nic fire up on boot but then have a script I can run that
will tell it to fire up and get an ip address when I need it to.

If i run the S10Network start file in /etc/rc3.d then I can get it to
fire up but I dont know how to tell the computer not to bother
turning on eth0 at boot.

I think this is what my problem and the solution I need is but if
anyone has any suggestion or alternate solutions please let me know.

I appreciate the great help that comes from this group. Also, I
guess another short question when I hit fcn+esc to suspend my box,
the screen goes all funny then it restarts X. Is this what is
supposed to happen? I havnt set up hibernate yet but that is next.

Again Thanks in advance.

I have a very similar situation...a really easy fix is to change your
default DHCP timeout. If you're running Red hat or Mandrake and using
dhcpcd, then edit your /etc/sysconfig/network and add a DHCPCDARGS="-t 8"
which tells it to timeout after 8 seconds.

I'm running rh7.2 on an Inspiron 4100. I'm having difficulty
getting a connection to a computer overhead-projector established.
(specifically displaying a staroffice presentation) I have
no problems displaying the lcd screen to an external monitor ...

it's probably a resolution problem. a lot of projectors can only go up to
800x600 or 1024x768. have you tried decreasing your resolution?

On my i8100 I just plug the VGA cable into the laptop, and press Fn+F8 (or
whatever function key has the CRT/LD function) - it switches to the projector
output. You'll also want to edit your XF86Config-4 - make sure your default
resolution in the config file matches the resolution of the projector

it's all working alright except when I tried to set up Xwindows.
Nothing worked so I downloaded ther latest version of XFree86

I'm pretty sure that the projector's max resolution is 800x600 ...
which is below my default (1400x1050) so that's likely the solution.

How about creating an alias for your Ethernet interface? One network could
use eth0 and the other could use eth0:0. Set eth0 to your home address, and
set eth0:0 to use DHCP.

After I resumed it the fans started to run immediately. And, of course, I

for auto-detection of the network you're in and allows you to adjust
files and configuration on the system to match your preferred settings
(fstab, gateways, proxy, ...)"

Hi,

As gentoo linux has just released it's first release, I thought I'll
give it a try on my Dell Inspiron 8100...
But! Since that distribution does compile everything from scratch on
install, how will my fans behave?
I wonder, because I once left the notebook powered on over night at
login prompt ( no I don't use (x|g|k)dm ). Next morning, I logged in,
launched X and gkrellm reported the cpu temp to be about 61°C and
launched the both fans at full speed - I suppose the fans never
started to cool down the machine because I use a Dell i8k aware kernel
and do control fans using Massimo Dal Zotto's i8kutils with the
GKrellM plugin to it (which were not running at login prompt)...
Or does the BIOS never turn on the fans by itselfs (even with a base
kernel)?
Should I be afraid having my cpu melting down trying to install gentoo
linux on my Dell Inspiron, cause it'll have it to compile for hours
with no manual fan control available...?

Thanks,

Alex

Hi,

I have an i8100 (bios A07) with a dual boot install with Mdk 8.2 and W2K.
Under linux i have been trying to stop the machine going into suspend (at least
while connected to AC), but with no success. I have disabled S2R and S2D in
BIOS, and I have disabled DPMS in X (xset dpms 0 0 0; xset -dpms). I've been
through the KDE power settings and turned them off. What more should I have to
do?
It seems that X is doing this, since when I'm in runlevel 3 it doesnt suspend,
but when I'm in runlevel 5 it does.

Pulling my hair out (well, not quite)

I have a similar (I think) situation in that my home setup is on a
different subnet to work, and the IP address is statically assigned,
whereas at work it is assigned by DHCP. There are also issues of
different DNS's and DNS search paths, etc, etc. Here's how I solved it.

create a directory /etc/sysconfig/networking/backup

set up the networking correctly for home

copy the following files into the backup directory, giving them a suffix
of '.home' :
     /etc/sysconfig/networking/devices/eth0.route
     /etc/sysconfig/networking/devices/ifcfg-eth0
     /etc/sysconfig/networking/profiles/default/resolv.conf
     /etc/ntp.conf (optional)

then, set up networking correctly for work

copy the same set of files to the backup directory, giving them a suffix
of '.work'

the contents of your backup directory should now look something like this :

-rw-------    1 root     root           57 Jan 31 20:16 eth0.route.home
-rw-------    1 root     root           57 Jan 31 18:33 eth0.route.work
-rw-------    1 root     root          191 Jan 31 21:26 ifcfg-eth0.home
-rw-------    1 root     root          123 Jan 31 21:26 ifcfg-eth0.work
-rw-r--r--    1 root     root         1765 Feb 25 08:50 ntp.conf.home
-rw-r--r--    1 root     root         1777 Feb 25 08:47 ntp.conf.work
-rw-r--r--    1 root     root          103 Jan 31 19:54 resolv.conf.home
-rw-r--r--    1 root     root           88 Apr  3 08:54 resolv.conf.work

Then, I created a little perl script to copy the correct set of files
into the right places. Heres the script :

[steve@i4100 backup]$ cat /usr/local/bin/setnet.pl
#!/usr/bin/perl -W

use strict ;

#
# Check command line args for either 'work' or 'home'
#
my $loc ;
foreach my $arg (@ARGV) {
         if (($arg eq 'work') || ($arg eq 'home')) {
                 $loc = $arg ;
                 last ;
         }
}

unless ($loc) {
         $loc = 'work' ;
         my ($sec, $min, $hour, $mday, $mon, $year, $wday, $yday, $isdst)
= localtime (time) ;
         if (($wday > 0) && ($wday < 6)) {
                 $loc = 'home' if (($hour < 7) || ($hour >= 17)) ;
         }
         else {
                 $loc = 'home' ;
         }
}
my %files = (
                 'eth0.route'    => ['../devices'],
                 'ifcfg-eth0'    => ['../devices', '../profiles/default',
'../../network-scripts'],
                 'resolv.conf'   => ['../profiles/default'],
                 'ntp.conf'      => ['/etc'],
                 ) ;
chdir '/etc/sysconfig/networking/backup' ;
foreach my $f (keys %files) {
         foreach my $d (@{$files {$f}}) {
                 my $cmd = "cp ${f}.${loc} ${d}/${f}" ;
                 my $ret = `${cmd} 2>&1` ;
         }
}

The script can take an optional argument of either 'home' or 'work', or
if no argument is present, it works out where I am, depending on the day
of the week and the hour of the day. You will probably want to change
this to suit your situation. I called the script 'setnet.pl', and
copied it into /usr/local/bin.

I then modified the /etc/init.d/network script, putting a call to
/usr/local/bin/setnet.pl right at the top of the script. If you don't
want to make the script executable, you would need to change this to
'perl /usr/local/bin/setnet.pl'.

Then, when you start your machine, it will automatically copy over the
correct set of files, and your network should start properly. You don't
need to fiddle with the DHCP timeout.

I hope this helps.

Steve

I too have some strange problems with the 2.4.18. After successfully installing
the kernel and the modules and a new entry in lilo I do a reboot to the new
kernel.

Lilo starts and I choose the new kernel to load but the only I do see is a black
screen and some activities on the hd. after 30sec. the systems is blocked but
still nothing on the screen.

Now rebboting I see that the hd was not correctly unmounted.

I installed the 2.4.10 some weeks ago with no problem but now I do not know that
is wrong.

1. Does anybody know that is the mistake?
2. How can I get pretend my system during the installation of a new kernel to
destroy my file system?

Thanks for your help.

I have a 'standard' install of 2.4.4 kernel of SuSE 7.2 Professional (desktop dual 466c processors in a BP6 motherboard -- I know, it is not a dell laptop, but when I get this sorted, I might update the laptop with a kernel rebuild.  All is Okay without a kernel rebuild, but I want to use more features that the stock kernel gives me.).

Trouble is when I compile my own kernel, it can not mount the / fs (reiserfs).

I have tried using initrd with reiserfs; I have tried including reiserfs in the kernel with =y setting.

Lilo seems to be setup fine.

Here is the text leading up to the kernel panic that I get:

-----------------
Loading module reiserfs
Using /lib/modules/2.4.4-SMP/kernel/fs/reiserfs/reiserfs.o
kmod:failed to exec /sbin/modprobe -s -k block-major-3, errno = 2
VFS: Cannot open root device "345" or 03:45
Please append a correct "root=" boot option
kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 03:45
-----------------

I can boot fine from the SuSE DVD -- I go through the install options until I get to a screen that allows me to boot an existing installation; that boots fine.

Does anyone have a good .config file for this setup?  I want to use that as a base...

Thanks

AndrewM

I have had this problem as well.
When you rebuild your kernel DONT put ReiserFS in as a modules.
Compile ReiserFS directly into the kernel.

This fixed the problem for me.

I bought it about 2 years ago for and old desktop I have and just
thought it would be handy to have on the laptop but if it doesn't
work it doesn't work.

Thanks.

Hi!

Anyone running a Latitude C810 (or similar, with NVIDIA card) under
Linux with WinXP as VMware guest??

I can't get the thing to install XP from CD. And it keeps
complaining that no DGA is available.

The other way round works ok (XP as host) but that's not what I
really want.

Any help appriciated!!!

Thanks
Juergen

Hello,

Am I correct in assuming that if I do an upgrade from ME to XP on my i8k,
windows will obliterate my linux partitions?

Thanks,
John O.
