Nothing particularly unique about my XF86Config-4, considering I
basically copied one from another list-member. Hope he doesn't mind
me reposting his site:
http://www.rm-r.net/~meff/i8200
You can look at his XF86Config-4 or any number of other ones kept in
the "files" section of this list.
I think if your syslog is showing "no valid screen settings" then that
probably means you don't have good HorizSync and VertRefresh settings.
Everybody seems to use slightly different values but anyone's working
XF86Config-4 should get you started.

The source RPMs are where all the other RPMs are:
http://www.nvidia.com/view.asp?PAGE=linux
GLX source is near the top, kernel source way at the bottom.

Yes, the GLX driver replaces some files provided by, I believe, a MESA
RPM. This is discussed in the Nvidia FAQ in the readme that comes
with the drivers (and is also at
http://download.nvidia.com/XFree86_40/1.0-2960/README.txt). The
bottom line is that you don't worry about it.

best wishes,
Scott

Many things can cause the "no valid screen settings" message. For example
if my nvidia driver doesn't load and initialize properly (for whatever
reason) I get that message. It's a catchall message that means "there's
some reason the X server can't write to the screen".

Some precisions:

- the problem is that this chipset uses the central memory. The
BIOS "steal" 1 Mb to the memory to show it as video memory. Windows
(as xig, I guess) does not care about it and just takes memory
itself. XFree just look for the video memory and find 1 Mb.

- We have to wait, either:
    - Dell releases a BIOS update allowing to raise the stolen memory
(BIOS of most of their competitor allow to reach 8 Mb)
    - Someone can write a better driver for i830 that do not care
about video memory. I know nothing about it, but I heard there was a
lack of informations from Intel.

- it is very easy to get a 8bit 1024x768 with recent distributions
(that ships with xfree 4.2, such as Mdk 8.2 or RH 7.3). Just
automatic.

Hello,

On my i8k (A20 bios) + 256 MB ram is takes ~1.5 mins to do a s2d
and ~1 min to restore.

However I've seen other laptops doing a very fast s2d
and restore under win.

So I wonder: Is my system mis-configured ? Do I miss something ?

Cheers,

couple of comments:
Are you sure the others you saw were suspending to disk?
Suspend-to-RAM is very fast ... and you can do that on your laptop
just like they can (should be Fn-Esc, I think).

other comment: suspend to disk is supported in software in windoze,
which might make a difference (although it's hard to see how that can
speed up the writing out to the HD). Anyway, if you want this kind of
suspend support built into the OS, it has recently been merged into
the 2.5.18 kernel --- but caveat emptor with those development kernels.

best,
Scott

AFAIK, the internal "Crystal 4205" is just a forwarder to the ICH
interface, I've yet to see any linux drivers commercial or non for it,
so your stuck with the i8x0/ICH drivers for now.

I tried ALSA but it produced very choppy sound-- I don't know why. I am
using the kernel version at the moment.

I couldn't believe myself so to be sure I pulled the plug and battery
at the same time. Came out back OK. So in this respect I am pretty sure,
took maybe 10-20s (I didn't time it) for a 128 MB ram laptop.

I didn't knew that ... humm I'll look at it maybe if I'll have the time.

I just wanted to reply to my own post, for the benefit of folks
lurking out there, reading, who may not know --- the kernels with an
odd 2nd number (currently 2.5.x) are *experimental* which means they
may not work. So I sure as hell wasn't recommending that the poster
put the 2.5.18 kernel on his laptop.
The typical user ought to stick with even-numbered kernels (currently
2.4.x).

Sorry if everybody out there knows this, but I'm sure there are people
who read this list who wouldn't necessarily know ...

I'm also running the latest NVIDIA drivers.

So I guess whatever problems you're experiencing are distribution related!

I have a Inspirion 8100 with the Geforce 2 GO chipset.  I am using
the NVIDIA 2314 source rpms for the X drivers.  I'm getting file
system corruption when using Gnome on the Red Hat distribution.
Everything seems to work fine when using the Mandrake distribution
though.  I believe the problem has something to do with the Nautilaus
file manager.  Does anyone have any experience with this problem?
Some insight would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks

Anyone got a working XF86Config-4 file that works at 800x600?

I can only seem to get 1400x1050 and resolutions down to about 1024x...
I get errors trying to specify 800x600 in my config file and wondered
if anyone else can "show me theirs" :)

I'm running suse7.2 on an Inspiron 5000e (ATI Rage mobility I think)
if that matters.

Ok people, with help of "convert" command in DOS I converted
my C: from FAT32 to NTFS. And now I can NOT mount C: in Linux!
Linux can see that this partition is a NTFS but it can't mount
it. I don't remember the message I got but it wasn't possible!

PS.
Probably I must do "something" in order to be able to read
NTFS? Any suggestion?

Read only support for NTFS in Linux is okay though. I use the
explore2fs utility in Windows to grab files off the Linux partition and
just mount the NTFS partition in Linux to do it the other way around.
This way neither OS is trying to write to the other's partition.

You need NTFS filesystem support in your kernel, and I believe most
kernels come with this disabled. There are two options, one for read-only
support and one for read-write support.

As someone else has already noted, write support for NTFS is known to
cause problems. "You have been warned." :)

I've been dual-booting between Linux and Windows for about three years on
most of my machines. One of my "best practices" is to redirect Windows "My
Documents" (and all other data folders to a separate data-only
partition; to make this partition accessible to both Windows and Linux I
use FAT32.

I use RedHat 7.3 on my I8100 and had troubles with my nVidia card.
I downloaded the Nvidia and Glx modules for 7.3 from the nvidia site
and it did work.
However just now I tried restarting Linux and find that there is an
error message
"No more VertRefresh values remaining"
What does this mean and how do i fix it.
My GLcore module doesnt work also, though I read that it was not
required.
I also receive an error saying there is a problem with my glx
something lib file is unresolved.??

I have an I8000 with GE Force 2 GO, on LM 8.2, and I'm confused as to
which GLX, and Kernel Driver files to choose from Nvidia's website.
Do I get the GLX source RPM or just the RPM, and for the kernel, do I
take the SMP, UP, or secure rpm. What do these Mean? Also, does it
matter which of the two XF86Config (in the files section under I8000
with Ge Force 2 Go) files I use, and can I just backup my old config
file and use one of these in it's place? I'm very new to linux, so
sorry if this is a no brainer.

Try jacking up the vertical refresh rate maximum in your X config file.

Get the tar.gz files. They will adapt to your systems and the commands
to use them are consistant.

	 tar -zxvf NVIDIA_kernel.tar.gz
	 cd NVIDIA_kernel
	 make install

	 tar -zxvf NVIDIA_GLX.tar.gz
	 cd NVIDIA_GLX
	 make install

Is "explore2fs" a built-in Windows utility, or did you have to add it?
  How do you use it?

Linux is stalling on boot up as it attempts to pull up network
connections.

Is there a way to get Linux to continue loading services and connections
AFTER boot up? Must it always happen DURING boot up?

It would appear that this would render Linux much more convenient on a
laptop. For a server or home machine - boot up is not a huge issue - on
a laptop it is (always shutting down and booting up, etc).

Unless I can get S2D or S2R working? Can someone point me to a good
link on S2D / S2R? S2R is the preferable option right? How much power
can RAM require? Surely it would be insignificant just not as safe as
S2D?

What I do is configure my eth0 as a static IP address, and then I have scripts
to bring up dhcpcd after bootup... this has worked well for me.

Either that, or just set your dhcp timeout to be shorter like 5 seconds or so.

you can set the network service to NOT start at boot time, how you do
this depends a bit on your distribution. Then after boot if you are
on a network you can (as root) do something like "service network
start" to get online.

I just reinstalled LM 8.2 on my Inspiron 8000 and can't get X
configured. I downloaded the GLX and kernel tar files from Nvidia,
installed them successfully, added "options NVdriver NVreg_mobile=1"
to modules.conf and replaced my old XF86Config-4 file with one of the
two files found in the files section. I rebooted, logged in as root,
and typed startx. It gave the following error:

Parse error on linke 15 of Section Files in
file /etc/X11/XFConfig-4, "ENDSECTION^M" is not a valid keyword
     in this section.

     (EE)Problem parsing the config file
     (EE)Error from xf86HandleConfigFile()

     Fatal Server Error:
       No Screens found

I checked the config file, and there is no "^M"
following "ENDSECTION" in the files section of the XF86config-4. I
don't know what to do, please help!

In addition to the previous post I had, about the error after
typing "startx", I also have another error that I don't understand.
During the booting process, there is an error that says, "Syntax
Error: Unexpected End of File in etc/rc.d/rc.modules line 18" I
checked the file out and line 18 is "done/sbin/modprove NVdriver"
I'm clueless, but maybe this will help someone answer the question I
asked in the previous post. thanks!
