I have a Latitude CPi A300ST and I installed Red Hat 6.0 on it. I have
problems configuring the sound. My audio card is NeoMagic MagicMedia
256AV. Any suggestions? I would be grateful for nay kind of help.
Thank you!

I have a Latitude CP M233XT running Redhat 6.0 and when the display
suspends I get a corrupted display. I have to ctrl-alt-backspace to
kill the X-server to correct the problem. Does anyone know how to
correct this or is the only solution to disable this feature in the
bios?
TIA,
Bill Mittelstadt

Does anyone know a way to get a higher resolution than 320*200 with a
NeoMagic 256AV Video card? I have a Latitude CPiA 366.
Thank you.

I have the same configuration. Redhat 6.0 was able to autodetect
the card and the display, and gave me 1024x768 resolution right
away. If you're using a different distribution, I think just
getting the very latest XFree86 distribution installed should
support it.
What I can't get it to do is to drive an external monitor,
e.g, when it's in the docking station.

I have RH 6.0 and I had to manually configure my
monitor and video card in the setup process. Should I
reinstall?

I wouldn't think so. Just running XConfigurator as root afterwards
would change the configuration without having to reinstall.
If that doesn't work for you, try XF86Setup instead.

Could you send me your XF86Config file so that I can replace mine?
Thank you. As for the docking station problem, I imagine you'd have to
be able to switch between two configurations. How I don't know.

Why do you want to connmect to an NT network ?
If you want NT fileserving and printing then you'll need to install SAMBA.
Can get a TCP/IP connection at all ? Is the adaptor working ?

Hi all,
Dell CPt C400/128 Mb ram, win98 + RedHat 6.0, kernel 2.2.10 with APM
compiled in. Disk layout :
MBR: lilo partition type
133 Mb original save_to_disk partition primary
1.5 Gb win 98, shrinked with FIPS 2.0 primary
4.4 Gb Linux RH 6 4 logicals (3 + swap)
The problem :
when I save to ram with <FN>-<suspend>, it works, and the resume works
as well (better so).
when I save to disk with <FN>-<a>, a resume (power button) bring the
normal
lilo, instead of booting from the S2D partition.
If I defined a lilo.conf entry for /dev/hda2 (S2D part), I can select it
and get the resume working.
How should I configure this mess so it recognize when it was saved to
disk
and do the appropriate resume ? Works with Win98, but not with Linux.
Could it be that I don't use the same partition type ?
Any hint welcome.
Charles
Greetings! I am considering the purchase of a Dell
Inspiron 7000 on which I intend to live in Linux. I
need some knowledgeable folks to help me determine if
there are appropriate drivers for all of the components
of this machine. I've done some research into this
matter, but I'd like a sanity check or two. Any help
would be greatly appreciated.
The machine in question has the following features:
* P II, 400 MHz, 15" XGA Active Matrix TFT
* 8MB ATI Mobility-P 3D Video with 2X AGP
Steve Hsieh (http://www.eecs.umich.edu/~steveh/inspiron/)
provides some ways to deal with this video card with a
15" monitor. Any known problems?
* 10GB Ultra ATA Hard Drive
* 128M, SDRAM, 2DIMMs
* Removable Combo 4X DVD-Rom Drive & 3.5" Floppy Drive
I realize that there are no DVD drivers around. Steve
Hsieh claims that this drive may be accessed as a
CD-Rom, however. Any known issues with either the
CD aspect or floppy aspect of this removable drive?
* 56K PCMCIA KFlex Psion Gold Card Global
According to Steve Hsieh's page, this should be fine.
* 3Com 10/100 Fast Ethernet PC Card
I think I found an experimental driver for this.
Any experience with drivers for these fast ethernet
cards?
Thanks very much for your attention and your help!

The only inadequacy I have found is the sound card. I
have a Latitude so that may prove the difference. But
you might want to enquire.

Thanks! I did overlook the sound card. Steve Hsieh
(http://www.eecs.umich.edu/~steveh/inspiron/) claims that
there is a beta commercial driver for the ESS Maestro-2
sound. But if this is a problem for folks, I'd like to
know about it. Thanks!

I solved the problem with the help of Avery Pennarun (maintainer of
apm).
The trick is to leave the MBR alone and to install lilo in the root of
my "/" partition.

All works fine with a NT loader on the MBR which launch Lilo.

I have a Latitude CPi A366XT which I have dual booting Redhat Linux 6.0
and win95. I was having the same problem with getting an external
monitor to work when I had it docked. I had hoped I would find a
solution on this list but it seems like other people were having the
same problem. Well, after some playing around I stumbled across not the
most elegant solution, but at least something that works. If you open
up the laptop while it is in the dock and hit the FN-F8 key after
starting X, it forces the computer to cycle back and forth between the
laptop screen and the external monitor. Sometimes you get something
goofy, especially on the laptop screen, but eventually I was able to
get a decent image on the monitor. Like I said, it isn't the most
elegant solution, but it works. If anyone has a better way, let me know.

Hi there,
I've just purcased an I7K and have been trying to get Linux up and
running on it. So far I've got linux running ok but I can't get X to
work on it at all. Is the ATI Mobility P3D 8M card supported and does
anyone here use it successfully in anything beyond VGA mode? I am
quite happy buying a commercial server if it would work alhtough I
haven't had any luck with AccelX's demo.

always the best place to get a definitive answer is the X free86 FAQ - see
www.linux.org. Have you found the linux hardware database ? See
http://lhd.datapower.com/
SusE might offer a commercial server that suits.

this is a very late reply but according to all sources i've found there
is no driver for the neomagic 256, or any other way to get it to work
except I saw one mention that there is an unsupported driver from
www.opensound.com.
Seemingly neomagic haven't supplied any info to the linux community to
make a driver.

I've bought a Inspiron 7000 and so far I have X running using Frame
buffer in 1024x768, sound with OSS but I can't get my 3CCFEM656B card
to work for the life of me. I know it's a Winmodem so modem is out but
I can't get ethernet to come up. I bound the card to 575 driver and
when I put the card in things seem to go alright. It detects the
correct Mac address, assigns an IRQ/Memory Range. The problem is if I
do something like < ifconfig eth0 192.168.1.1 netmask 255.255.255.0 >
it looks like it adds ok. ifconfig lists the proper info. I can even
ping 1.1 but it never actually talks with the rest of the world.
Neight the 10 or 100 lights come on which leads me to suspect that it's
not autodetecting the network speed so I tried setting it with < ifport
eth0 10BaseT > but that failed too.
Anyone run into this? Anyone have it working?
Thanks,
Jeff
Hi there,
I've installed RH6.0 on an Inspiron 3500, and I have a few flaws left:
- Sometimes the system hangs for a few minutes after starting Gnome.
On
these sessions, it also hangs for a while when quitting Gnome. The
problem seems to occur much more frequently when using a tcsh
instead
of a bash.
- The SVGA server runs fine, but installing the X server from
Precision
Insight for the Neomagic card made things worse. Ghostscript
antialiases
fine with the SVGA server, and by far not as good using the
accelerated
one.
Any help greatly appreciated,
Dirk
I have spent the last 12 hours trying to get an identical machine to do
the same thing. I am experiencing exactly the same problems. Do you
have any update or progress??? HELPPP!

I have a Latitude 366 CPiA that uses the 256 chipset
also. I got an XF86Config file from Chuck Boeheim
that allows 1024x768. You might want to try it. HEre
it is.

Whenever I try to install Redhat Linux 6 on my Dell Inspiron 7000
laptop, I get all the way to after it installs the packages, then after
that I get a Error box with message saying "An error occured durning
step "Configure mouse" of the install." Then 3 options Previous witch
does nothing, Retry witch gives the same error, and menu. If I select
menu it gives a list of the other installing options that I need to do,
but when I try to pick one...like "Configure networking" or "Configure
timzone" it returns to the menu like nothing happened, the only options
that do work are set root password, and make boot disk, and exit. If I
do try to exit alot of things arent set so I can't login and use
anything. The laptop has one of those touch pad type mouses, but ive
also tryed it with a 3 button PS/2 mouse, and bolth give the error. Im
booting from the CD.
I have a Dell Latitude CPiA laptop running Red Hat Linux 5.2. After
some hacking, we managed to get it to run X even with the notorious
Neomagic 256 chipset. Except for one thing: when you close the screen
(causing the machine to suspend), and then reopen it, the graphics are
corrupted. This is not a problem in Windows. I am assuming that the
graphics card gets shut down on a suspend, and must be reinitialized,
which is handled nicely by the Windows drivers but not by Linux. I
notice you posted a query for help about a similar problem with your
Latitude CP M233XT. Did you ever get a resolution to the problem?
