When you ran /sbin/lilo after booting from your rescue disk, were you
'chroot'ed to the root file system and was /etc/lilo.conf on your hard
disk visible (mounted)? Also, do you have more than one disk drive?

I've had similar problems with both GRUB and LILO if I'm not very
careful to be 'chroot'ed to the boot disk root filesystem. Also, I
have one system I support that has a hard disk plus a JAZ drive that
is always on and mounted. The wierd part is that when booting from a
rescue disk, the JAZ drive is sensed first as /dev/sda, and the hard
disk as /dev/sdb. For some odd reason, LILO doesn't handle a boot
sector on /dev/sdb correctly. I have to boot with the JAZ drive
offline, tell LILO to write the boot sector to /dev/sda, but load the
kernel and boot image from /dev/sdb1.

I can't answer your question, but for what it's worth, I had a good
experience with <http://www.crucial.com/>. They make it very easy to
find the right kind of memory for your model of computer, I'm under
the impression that their memory comes from reputable vendors, the
price seems right (it's certainly cheaper than Dell's prices...), and
the memory arrived quickly.

Running XP on first partition and Linux boot is second, followed by
root, swap then a shared FAT32 drive

It appears the fat32 drive was the problem, Linux was trying to find
a boot image on that drive i share between liunux and windows and
that is why i got the LIL- message inplying that there are no boot
images on the FAT32 part.

So, i have an i4100 with the 16MB Radeon Mobility, I am also running
RH7.2 with kernel 2.4.9-34. I installed XFree86 4.2 and it works
beautifully with this card, the problem is the 3D stuff. I got
agpgart to load and i got glxinfo to show direct access enabled, but
it shows that TCL is disabled as well as when i try to run glxgears my
system just freezes, the mouse will still move but i cant get any
access at the system, i can ssh in and i can even kill the offending
processes but the machine stays frozen, only a hard boot will help.

Is there anyone out there who has any clues as to how to get this
working?!?! I just wanna play Castle Wolfenstein!!!!

Thank you for any help in advance.

Subject: Floppy XOR CD: how to access?

Hi,

I've just installed RedHat 7.3 on my Latitude C400 (dual boot with
Win2k).
Since I'm fairly new to Linux, I am curious as to how I can mount
the CD-ROM after booting using a floppy disk? There can be only one
peripheral disk device (floppy or CD-ROM), and unmounting the floppy
is one thing, but mounting the CD afterwards seems right
out: /dev/hdc (in my case) is not valid just like that.

Am I missing something very simple, or do I need to start learning
kernel building skills?

Thanks,

I've got an I8k2. The first exhaust fan in the back (towards the
center of the machine) occationally makes an odd sound. It's like
something is hitting the fan blades and causing the fan to spin down a
bit. It's happened twice, both times when I left the laptop running
on AC for a while, while sitting on my bed. The exhaust fans were not
obstructed. Both times, it went away after I put the laptop into its
case and left it off for a while. Dell tech was (unsurprisingly) not
helpful, suggesting I need a new motherboard, and offering to take it
for a week. At least thats what I think he said, I had one supporter
that didn't speak english, and another that mumbled like his face was
glued to an index card...

Has anyone else had something like this? Are these fans prone to
dying? Should I listen to Dell, now that the fan seems to be working
again?

The modeline you mentioned is in fact inside my XF86Config file.
After X started, I searched /var/log/XFree86.0.log & came up with the
following references to "1280"

(--) ATI(0) virtual size is 1280x1024 (pitch 1280)
(**) ATI(0) Mode "1280x1024": 107.9 MHz, 59.1 KHz, 54.8 Hz
(II) ATI(): Modeline "1280x1024" 107.97 1280 1312 1432 1704 1024 1026
1029 1054 (null)

Also, for what it is worth, I set the VertRefresh to 50.0-100 as
directed by http://support.jp.dell.com/docs/systems/psyd/overview.htm
but this didn't seem to change anything as things still do not look
correct.

Furthermore I should clarify what I mean by things do not look
right. In 1400x1050, I see a solid gray background after I login &
start X/mwm. In 1280x1024, there are light & dark gray vertical
strips, maybe 10 pixels wide. On top of that, occasionally
individual words within an xterm seem to be fuzzy. That is maybe the
top pixel of a words will be duplicated one pixel higher or vice
versa for the lower pixel.

Can some e-mail me an XF86Config file where they are successfully
running Linux 7.2 using XFree 4.1 where the screen is 1280x1024?

Thanks in advance

Steve

Hi Egon,

I believe that once you've booted off a floppy and your system has
started up, you can unmount your floppy drive
(e.g. "umount /mnt/floppy") and then mount your CD-ROM. If you plan
on mounting your CD drive a lot, you should put an entry in
your /etc/fstab file for it. E.g.:
/dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom iso9660 noauto,owner,kudzu,ro 0 0
Once you have that entry in your fstab file, mounting the CD drive is
easy (e.g. "mount /mnt/cdrom").

I'd recommend that you setup your dual-boot such that you don't need
a boot floppy. Here's a link to a HOWTO for Win2k:
http://geocities.com/epark/linux/grub-w2k-HOWTO.html

Cheers,
Ed

I have an i8200 that had these same symptoms. I enabled dma, shutdown
all kinds of daemons, tried a ton of different things and couldn't get
the choppiness out. I was using mplayer that I home compiled and I
didn't have any dropped frames. I installed xine from debian unstable,
and finally the video is not choppy anymore. Before, I tried xine from
woody, but it was choppy. Here are the relevant packages:

libxine0 0.9.12-2
xine-ui 0.9.12-1
xine-dvdnav 0.9.10-2
libdvdnav0 0.1.1-1
libdvdread2 0.9.3-1

The above packages do not provide dvd decryption.

All of the above are not hand compiled, but instead from debian unstable
and they appear to work well. Take this with a small grain of salt
however because I have been unable to test the same dvd's that were
choppy before-- but the one's I have tested since installing xine have
not been choppy.

I have a 1.6Ghz, i8200 with nvidia geforce2 go 32mb using xfree86 4.1.0
and nvidia drivers without agp and with the apm patches.

Hope this helps.

Hi Brad,

Thanks for your suggestion. I tried the fdisk -l /dev/hda, but it only
finds my FAT32 partition on /dev/hda1. My Linux partitions have
disappeared, which is also why the rescue disk cannot find them.

Well, that was a bad day, and I probably shouldn't have switched on a
computer anyway...

venki,
boot a rescue system off the redhat CD, and mount your root filesystem and
then go change the lilo.conf or grub menu.lst to fix the partition
renumbering.

(remember to rerun lilo if you've modified lilo.conf)

cheers,

I used the hint below on Xnest to get kde desktop on cygwin running
on windows xp.

$Xnest -geometry 1250x950 :2 & ; this causes a new window to open up
with a separate X server/client, but without a window manager.
(executing kdestart main cygwin console caused fvwm to be used. Some
icons were missing on kde panel and windows)

launched a xterm in the Xnest window

$xterm -display :2 &

in this xterm, connected to remote linux computer using ssh with X
option

After getting secure connection, I executed kdestart on the remote
computer. This caused kde associated window manager to be launched.
kde desktop is displayed properly on client computer.

I have i8200, and will be dual booting Windows XP and Mandrake 8.2.
Windows XP doesn't use a s2d partition, and apparently attempts to get
s2d working in Linux on an i8200 have so far been unsuccessful.
Therefore, the most compelling reason for NOT installing LILO or GRUB on
the MBR doesn't seem to apply. I think I will format my disk so that
/boot is hda1, and WinXP's NTFS partition is hda2, with everything else
going in an extended partition. What are the pros and cons of installing
LILO or GRUB in the MBR given that setup - are there still reasons for
preferring installing it on /boot and making hda1 the active partition?

What is the likely future of s2d on the i8200? I've heard it mentioned
on this list that kernel 2.6 will support s2d in the way WinXP does -
i.e. by writing to a file. So I'm thinking that I will probably never
need to reserve a partition for s2d - am I right in that assumption?

TIA, Darren

I know this sounds bizarre, but after I suspend my I8200 (have done
all the nvidia hacks and kernel compiles etc), everything works for the
following problem.

- After resuming, I cannot resize any windows, highlight any text
etc, basically anything that involves holding down the left mouse button
and dragging fails. WEIRD! Any ideas anyone?

Hi Darren,

I see 2 questions here:
1. which is better: LILO or GRUB? I've used both, and IMO GRUB is
better. GRUB supports LBA by default, and you don't have to reinstall
GRUB everytime you update the config file or recompile the kernel
like you do with LILO. The initial install process for either is
essentially the same if leave NTLDR in the MBR; i.e. you copy over
the first 512 bytes of the /boot partition to C: and edit C:\boot.ini

2. which lives in the MBR: a Linux boot loader (LILO or GRUB) or the
Windows boot loader (NTLDR)? I've seen posts to the effect that
antivirus software complains if the boot loader in the MBR is not a
Windows boot loader

HOWTO for GRUB and Win2K/NT/XP:

Ed

Thanks for the help, Ed. I'm a bit confused, though.

Do I actually need to use the Win XP boot loader like this whether I use
GRUB or LILO? Emil replied earlier that he has dual boot working just
fine with LILO in the MBR. I thought that the Win XP boot loader was
only if you needed to use multiple version of Windows? If what you are
saying is that *if* I install either LILO or GRUB to /boot instead of
the MBR, *then* I also have to edit c:\boot.ini and copy the first 512
bytes of /boot partition to c:, then in that case it sounds like it
would be a lot easier to just stick LILO or GRUB in the MBR and be done
with it. (I'm presuming that having LILO or GRUB in the MBR means I
*don't* have to mess around with the Windows partition.) I'm new to
Windows NT/2000/XP so I think that what is confusing me is the role the
Windows boot loader has in all this.

I can live with complaints from Norton AntiVirus about what's in the
MBR. Presumably you can tell Norton that what's in the MBR is okay and
to stop bugging you about it.

Okay, that sounds useful. I'll go off and read it now. Thanks a lot for
the help.

Best, Darren

Hello,

I have just installed RH 7.3 and it was a gem to install, with one
exception - the modem. I have the same combo as you and so far have
not found out how to get it running.

I just installed RedHat 7.3 (very easy) and then got the hsflinmodem drivers
for the modem in my i4100. works great. I read in the achives for this list
that the i4100 I have has the same modem as other have reported in thier 8k
series

/sbin/lspci reports the modem as:
00:1f.6 Modem: Intel Corp. 82801CA/CAM AC'97 Modem (rev 01) (prog-if 00
[Generic])
         Subsystem: Conexant: Unknown device 5421
Flags: bus master, medium devsel, latency 0, IRQ 11
         I/O ports at d400 [size=256]
         I/O ports at dc00 [size=128]

I got the driver from:

I have this problem sometimes. But not always. Hard to reproduce.

Even stranger, it sometimes goes away after a few minutes on its own,
then the mouse works fine. But not always. And never for any obvious
reason. Hard to reproduce.

One thing that seems to have worked the last couple times this
happened to me: switch to one of the consoles (say, Ctrl-Alt-F1) and
then back to X (Ctrl-Alt-F7) and see if that helps.

Hi Scott,

Thanks for the suggestion, but it didn't help :(

The only thing I have found that works is shutting down and restarting X,
and this makes suspending pointless, as it takes just as long as starting
the machine from scratch.

WinXP (and Win2K) are both built on the WinNT code base. WinNT uses a
boot loader called NTLDR. NTLDR is automatically installed on the MBR
during a WinNT/2K/XP installation. NTLDR supports booting multiple
Windows OSs based on the entries in the C:\boot.ini file.

Emil is correct, GRUB or LILO in the MBR works (i.e. you're replacing
NTLDR with GRUB or LILO). However, people have reported that
antivirus software may complain if the boot loader doesn't contain
the NTLDR. From the av software perspective, it looks like the MBR
got corrupted.

That is correct. If you're using GRUB, you only have to do that
C:\boot.ini edit and 512 byte copy once. It's not so bad.

LILO? GRUB? To put on the MBR or not on the MBR? All these options
are viable : )

Ed

Hey!

I'm trying to get a Thrustmaster Firestorm Dual Power gamepad(the
name long enough for you?) to work on my linux box and then my

standards for Human Interface Devices(HID), and while i'm not a

(messed with a lot of stuff and very comfortable with CLI) I've
never messed with any HIDs, so any help will be.... well helpfull;)

Thanks,
