Hi all,

I'm looking to get a wirless network set up. I have an i4100, what
NIC would people reccomend, so far as I have figured the Prism chip
is the easiest to get running under Linux. I'm running MD8.1

Cheers

Hi all,

ia am not able to install the Suse Linux (8.0) from the DVD. It
boots, but, when entring Yast for the setup, it cannot read the
package list and descritption.

I receive error messages stating that i am trying to read over the
end of the device, so my comprehension here is that the Samsung sn-
308b Drive gives uncorrect info to the Driver.

Note that i am able to install from CDs, but i anyway would like an
answer.

Any help???

I think the easiest is a toss-up between the intersil prism2 and any of the

it sounds like your cd images might be screwed up.
try doing the 'linux mediacheck' boot.

Try the fall back of using disk 1 or disk 2 in lieu of

work fine.

I have had this problem, but not just coming out of suspend. It was
just trying to get into and out of the setup screens (eg Fn+F1). Wish I
had the solution, but I only recently started having this problem.

It seems crazy, but I think it might be related to the dvd/cdrw-- it
doesn't seem to happen unless there is a disk in the drive. Mind you,
this is just a hypothesis, and is in no way intended to be the
definitive cause or explanation.

Thanks to the advise from Scott, I finally got the internal modem on
my I4100 to work with the hsf drivers.

However, I have one problem I need to work around before it works
flawlessly: It takes my phone company too long for the standard
settings to give me a dial tone: If I just let the computer try to do
a dial up, I (in most cases) get a ``NO DIALTONE'' error. If I
instead lift the handset I have in parallel with the computer's line,
wait for the dial tone, and then ask the computer to dial up, it
connects.

I browsed to the documentation of the v.90 codes, but I have not been
able to find the right code. So does anybody knows how I ask for a
longer delay before the modem times out saying ``NO DIALTONE''.

Thanks

Peter

There is one other consideration: on my Latitude CPi, the 'suspend to
disk' function depends upon a MBR which looks at the 'active' flag in the
partition table, and chains to the loader in the first sector of that
partition. To my knowledge, neither Lilo or grub pay any attention to the
'active partition' flag, so if you wish to implement s2d, you must use a
MBR such as the old DOS loader which supports this algorithm.

I used to get that problem, but I haven't for a while. I don't know
what I've done to change it though!

What version of the graphics drivers do you have? (And which
graphics card?) I have 1.0-2960 installed - but I had to hack the
kernel driver so that it would allow the laptop to suspend.

David,

thanks for the reply. I get the impression that you haven't been a member
of this list for a long time... the Crucial memory was discussed 8 or 10
(?) months ago, and the general concensus at the time was that its current
draw was far higher than other brands and caused problems with some
people's Inspirons.

The other problem is that I'm in Canada, and ordering one chip from a U.S.
mail order place is an expensive proposition, there are some fees that get
tacked on (for customs inspection?) that make the price uninteresting.

Anyone out there with Azen memory that didn't feel like answering first
time around??

Cheers.

It might be S7=[time in milliseconds].

BTW, for speed dialing I always use s11=50. 50 milliseconds is the
shortest amount of time that each tone will be played. You could type
s11=0, but it will only drop to 50 milliseconds anyway.

Hi Rick,

Do you know whether NTLDR supports that 'active partition' flag? I'd
assume yes, otherwise s2d wouldn't work under WinNT/2K/XP, right?

No, just a couple of months. (And I read through the archive for
maybe the two months before that before joining the list.)

Interesting. Mine has worked flawlessly; I just searched the
archives, though, and it's possible I'll run into problems, since I
haven't yet tried to run any high-powered games on it. (I'm still
waiting for my software to arrive that I should have gotten soon after
I ordered the computer; it might be on its way now, though. At least
I got rid of some of my annoyance by venting at Dell/redeem-it.com at
<http://math.stanford.edu/i8200/timeo.html>.)

With luck, maybe it will work for me. The 8200 has different memory
than earlier models; maybe Micron manufactures that with a lower draw
(or Dell manufactures their machines to be able to handle the higher
draw). Or maybe, given that I'll have the laptop plugged in, the
powermizer stuff won't kick in. Or maybe I can turn it off
explicitly, or maybe the current video drivers handle this better.
We'll see...

winnt/2k/xp uses its own suspend to disk/hibernate file scheme...it doesn't use
a separate partition system the way linux does. it hibernates to a file on the
windows filesystem.

I have the following setup at home. I have a desktop computer that is
always on and working as a gateway to Internet for my laptop. What I
want to do is to have my home directory available both on the laptop
and on the desktop. So if I work on something at home and saves it to
my home directory i can work on it on my laptop when commuting to
work, and when I get to work an realizes that I have left my laptop
on the train I can connect to my home desktop and retreive the file.
How do I achieve this in a nice way?

I try to use the Media Bay of my I4100 for the floppy drive and the
CD/CDRW/DVD Combo drive.
Unfortunately i only get the CD/DVD Drive working yet – not the
floppy and thus it is not possible to change the drives (Disk / CD)
without rebooting.
Can somebody tell me what i should do?

Thanks
Andreas

put it in the "Pointer" section.
run `man XF86Config` for more info on the format.

you can put your home dir on your desktop machine, and export it via NFS to
your laptop. this however would not help you in working on your laptop when
you are commuting however. it seems that you might want to use a tool like
'rsync' to synchronise files before shutdown or something.
