This appears to be a common problem with Dell laptops. it is the same on my
i2650 and is due apparently to a bug in the Dell bios. The laptop works fine
though, you just cannot see the battery level.

Hello all,

I recently decided to attempt to use my Linksys wireless card on my
latitude. I've read all the sites and gor the info I need, but can
someone point me in the direction of some documentation, that
explains how to configure the kernel. I've got bits and pieces , but
I really would like something a bit more detailed.

Thanks,
Sean

I have gotten my screen so that it is in the correct 1600x1200 res. And
everything works great. I then added the line vga=normal to the kernel
at startup and my consoles work fine. However is there a way I can get a
better resolution on the consoles perhaps using a generic driver just
for the consoles and still use the ati driver for the desktop?

At work in windows I use two screens my lcd and an attached monitor
however I am not able to do this is suse. Under multihead it won't let
me do anything. How can I setup my monitor to work as a second desktop
in suse?

hello

here is my previous post on the subject
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/linux-dell-laptops/message/18218

in different parts of the country,
you may have a slightly different setup
the remote line responds to me with "ANSNet"
yours may be different.

i also had downloaded the windows executable,
http://dialaccess.rr.com/dialers/dialers.html,
to see their connect script in action.
this is how i know that they have 3 or 4
different options, depending on how the remote line
sends its initial response

i would run the setup i listed in the above link with a terminal window,
if the first response they send is includes ANSNet
you are home free.
other choices are:
Sprint-ip
UU.net
uqkt1
uqkt2
saturn.bbn
most of them have different login sequences

if it is something different,
you will need to install the windows dialer on a windows system,
to get access at the script
to see what responses are expected out of you.
or
email me privately
as i probably shouldnt publish their script.
who knows what i agreed to to get it.

you still have to divulge your credit card number,
http://dialaccess.rr.com/drwelcome.html
they say after 10 hours usage a month you have to pay
when the trial is over,
but it vaguely seems the trial has been extended
i have never been charged but i dont use it much.

my main gaol was to get my linmodem configured
for linux so it was ready to go when i needed it,
and also to have portable internet access.
but i have moved up to a sierra 550 wireless card
thru sprintpcs for portable internet access.
now that is a story.

i do believe that they have the ability to update their windows
binary dialer configuration, so what may work today could
become invalid in the future.  Even in windows though, if you
set up the connect strings manually, you dont need to run their
binary doodad/spyware?/whateverthey call it.

i did verify that my username/password was accepted under windows,
before i tackled the linux connection.
ok, so i cheated a little .

write back if you need more assistance

see ya

This is a really dumb question, but....

In previous releases of RH and KDE, KDE plays a little tune at the end
of its startup. My stock installation of RH8 on an I8200 does not
seem to do so, though I believe audio is working correctly.

Can anyone tell me whether I should expect the startup sequence to
make noise? Thanks.

I'm skeptical of all this. I've been using NVIDIA for almost two years,
and I've never been required to insert NVdriver before I startx. In fact
inserting NVdriver is part of startx.

I believe the problem is somewhere else, but I'll confess I don't know

You'll need the pcmcia-cs package. Get it either from your distribution
archives or from sourceforge.

When you configure your kernel disable PCMCIA support. That's right,
disable it. If you don't, pcmcia-cs will not build driver modules.

In the Network Devices section, enable Wireless LAN but don't choose any
devices.

Build and install your kernel, and reboot to it.

Go to /usr/src/modules/pcmcia-cs and do what the docs say about
configuring and installing. I can't remember if it's "make configure &&
make install" or "./configure && make install".

I figured out how to get to other mail servers than Earthlink - we had to do this at work so our mobile users could connect. Unfortunately we had to use Outlook's settings to do this. I'll try to remember what we did, as it could be useful to someone else :)

Try putting this in your /etc/modules.conf

alias char-major-195 nvidia

That should fix it hopefully.

Are you using LILO or grub for your boot loader? /etc/lilo.conf should have numerous commented-out lines of resolutions along with their descriptions. Try switching from vga=normal to vga=771 ( I THINK!!! ) which would give you a 1024x768x32 console. Note that you'll have to reinstall lilo if this is the case (just run 'lilo' as root)

If you're using grub, I have no idea. :/ I use Slackware, which doesn't support grub, and that's just fine by me :)

There are two parts of the nvidia driver. One is the kernel module, which needs to be loaded before startx. The second is the X driver which is loaded in your XF86Config file.

Under slackware (which doesn't help much if you're using a different distro which basically sets everything up for you), you would add "/usr/sbin/modprobe nvidia" (I believe that's the path to modprobe...? not on a linux machine at the moment)

Probably doesn't help you too much though, sorry :(

The NVIDIA kernel module does NOT need to be loaded before startx. That
was the whole point of my message.

I just verified this by leaving the X environment and removing NVdriver
with rmmod. Then I did "startx" and it came up just fine.

Once again, NVdriver does NOT need to be loaded before starting X. If X
is properly configured loading the driver is part of starting X.

I believe the Truemobile uses the Orinoco chipset but I'm not sure which
firmware revision it has. You will have to patch the driver to enable monitor
mode. You can find a link to the patch at the airsnort page. I had problems
with the patch/airsnort when the PC card I was using had firmware other than
7.52.

Hi
This is my first post on the group and I would like to say hello to
everybody. My laptop (rh 8.0 ) uses a wireless connection. The wireless
works just fine. I login and then plug in the pcmcia wireless card and
the computer activates the wireless and gets its ip using dhcp.
Problem is this causes X to start denying permission to connect to 0:0
and I can't open another window.
All I can do then is restart X.
So I guess dhcp must be done before X starts. But I would like to know
if there is a way to teach X the new ip information without restarting ?

Somebody posted a XF86config for this in the files section.

Unfortunately there is no reliable GUI (or ncurses) that I've evaluated

Good luck!

Tired of spam? Get advanced junk mail protection with MSN 8.

my guess is that the power management daemon program (apmd to be
precise) is not started.

anyway,  just do the experiment.   if u dont like it,  changing off to
on in the cmd  brings it up again... so u dont lose much.

this sounds like a hardware problem,

if the computer is turned off and you plug up the cord,
and it doesnt show it is charging,
tells me it is a hardware problem.

This is not entirely true. startx does not use insmod or modprobe; it
makes a request to the kernel module loader. If NVdriver is not loaded
at startup (which is perfectly acceptable and has no ill effects) then
it will look for the character device 195. If you're running the nvidia
driver 3123 or less, the line to add to modules.conf is

alias char-major-195 NVdriver

If you're using > 3123, use

alias char-major-195 nvidia

just like Mr. Trickett stated.

But loading the module at startup is not really a problem, in my opinion.

What part of what I said do you believe to be wrong?

I said loading NVdriver is part of startx. I said you don't need to load
NVdriver before doing startx.

Both of these are repeatably, verifiably correct.

What you said about char-major is true but I didn't address that.

Hi, all

I installed nvidia-driver 1.0-4349 today. Everything works fine,
including noticable 2D and slight 3D speedup. But it will lockup X when
DPMS is enabled, reproducablely. If I disable the DPMS, it works.

My systems is

Dell I4100
GeForce 2 Go w/ 32MB
256MB RAM
Debian GNU/Linux Unstable (updated to 4/2/2003)
XFree86 4.2.1.1
Kernel 2.4.20 with low-latency and preemption patch
GCC 3.2
Glib 2.3.1

Welcome any help.

Dano,

Have you noticed if the new nVidia driver causes visible flickering of your
screen after you've used Fn + D to blank the screen and have then unblanked
the screen ?

Thanks, John

(Sorry - no idea about the DPMS problem)

It does cause flickering lines on the left of my screen until I switch
to a console and then back. (Like previous drivers)

No idea about the DPMS either, sorry!

Somebody posted a XF86config for this in the files section.

Unfortunately there is no reliable GUI (or ncurses) that I've evaluated
yet for configuring multihead other than Matrox's own config program.

Good luck!

I just had to smile. Your reply appears to be indicative of a lot of

I have a dual boot system with SUSE 8. When I try to pull up the
linux partition it hangs when it gets to Loading PCMCIA Kernel.....

Any suggestions appreciated.

Warm regards,
paul
