For Info :
All works fine with a NT loader on the MBR which launch Lilo.

I solved the problem with the help of Avery Pennarun (maintainer of
apm).
The trick is to leave the MBR alone and to install lilo in the root of
my "/" partition.

Thanks! I did overlook the sound card. Steve Hsieh
(http://www.eecs.umich.edu/~steveh/inspiron/) claims that
there is a beta commercial driver for the ESS Maestro-2
sound. But if this is a problem for folks, I'd like to
know about it. Thanks!

The only inadequacy I have found is the sound card. I
have a Latitude so that may prove the difference. But
you might want to enquire.

Greetings! I am considering the purchase of a Dell
Inspiron 7000 on which I intend to live in Linux. I
need some knowledgeable folks to help me determine if
there are appropriate drivers for all of the components
of this machine. I've done some research into this
matter, but I'd like a sanity check or two. Any help
would be greatly appreciated.

The machine in question has the following features:

   * P II, 400 MHz, 15" XGA Active Matrix TFT

   *  8MB ATI Mobility-P 3D Video with 2X AGP

      Steve Hsieh (http://www.eecs.umich.edu/~steveh/inspiron/)
provides some ways to deal with this video card with a
      15" monitor. Any known problems?

   * 10GB Ultra ATA Hard Drive

   *  128M, SDRAM, 2DIMMs

   *  Removable Combo 4X DVD-Rom Drive & 3.5" Floppy Drive

I realize that there are no DVD drivers around. Steve
Hsieh claims that this drive may be accessed as a
CD-Rom, however. Any known issues with either the
CD aspect or floppy aspect of this removable drive?

   * 56K PCMCIA KFlex Psion Gold Card Global

According to Steve Hsieh's page, this should be fine.

   *  3Com 10/100 Fast Ethernet PC Card

I think I found an experimental driver for this.
Any experience with drivers for these fast ethernet
      cards?

Thanks very much for your attention and your help!

Hi all,

Dell CPt C400/128 Mb ram, win98 + RedHat 6.0, kernel 2.2.10 with APM
compiled in. Disk layout :

MBR: lilo partition type
133 Mb original save_to_disk partition primary
1.5 Gb win 98, shrinked with FIPS 2.0 primary
4.4 Gb Linux RH 6 4 logicals (3 + swap)

The problem :

when I save to ram with <FN>-<suspend>, it works, and the resume works
as well (better so).

when I save to disk with <FN>-<a>, a resume (power button) bring the
normal
lilo, instead of booting from the S2D partition.

If I defined a lilo.conf entry for /dev/hda2 (S2D part), I can select it
and get the resume working.

How should I configure this mess so it recognize when it was saved to
disk
and do the appropriate resume ? Works with Win98, but not with Linux.

Could it be that I don't use the same partition type ?

Any hint welcome.

Charles

Why do you want to connmect to an NT network ?

If you want NT fileserving and printing then you'll need to install SAMBA.

Can get a TCP/IP connection at all ? Is the adaptor working ?

Thank you. As for the docking station problem, I imagine you'd have to
be able to switch between two configurations. How I don't know.

I wouldn't think so. Just running XConfigurator as root afterwards
would change the configuration without having to reinstall.
If that doesn't work for you, try XF86Setup instead.

I have the same configuration. Redhat 6.0 was able to autodetect
the card and the display, and gave me 1024x768 resolution right
away. If you're using a different distribution, I think just
getting the very latest XFree86 distribution installed should
support it.

What I can't get it to do is to drive an external monitor,
e.g, when it's in the docking station.

is that card different from the 256's shipped with cpi 300's ? The 256 with
those models works fine with x 3.3.3 drivers.

DHCP is easyish. You can set it upfrom the gnome control panel. in RH.

As for the ethernet card, try the latest PCMICA package.

As for sound, urm, I can't get it to work either.

Hey all...I just got my hands on a new Dell Latitude CPt. It's a Celeron
333a, 192
MB, and using the NeoMagic 256ZX for video. It also has a 3Com/Megahertz
3c574BT 10/100 PCMCIA card. I'm trying to get Red Hat 6.0 up and totally
happy on it. Problems:

     - The SVGA server doesn't play nicely with the 256ZX. I downloaded the
binary-only beta NeoMagic server from Precision Insight's FTP, and that
will at
least give me video, but it looks like 320x200 or so, and that's it...I can
see like
the middle 50% of the GNOME splash screen, and you can't get it to pan to
the
rest of the screen. On starting up the X server, it seems the server
thinks I have
64k of video ram (when I have 4 MB).

     - The pcmcia package that ships with RH 6 is earlier than 3.0.0, which
is the
first version to include a driver (admittedly flaky) for the 3c574. I
downloaded
3.0.13 and built and installed that. I think the driver is being loaded
now, since
doing an insmod on the 3c574 driver says that it's already in. However, I
have
no net access...if nothing else, because I also need to get DHCP up and
running
(which I know squat about). The dhcpcd package is installed, but I don't
know
how to use it yet...just running it has it sitting there and timing out
after a
minute or so. (I'll look out for a DHCP howto to try to get a clue here)

     - I don't know if this is normal, but I couldn't install off of the
CD-ROM...I
booted up, and when it asks for the CD, I have to pull the floppy drive to
swap in
the CD-ROM, and the RH installer isn't aware of the drive after it is
swapped in.
I ended up having to copy the CD to a separate FAT partition and installing
off
of that. I originally intended to do a normal FTP install, but I couldn't
do that, as
the RH 6 installer and PCMCIA support disk don't support the 574.

So, basically, I need to know:

     - Is it possible to get X working on this bugger?
     - How do I get pcmcia 3.0.13 and dhcpcd working and playing nicely
together?
     - Also, does anyone know about support for this laptop's NeoMagic
MagicMedia 256 sound?

Inquiring minds want to know :) There are about 150 of us new hires who
are
being issued this exact configuration, and a good handful of us are
interested in
getting Linux working on it. (just having NT leaves me feeling so naked!)

Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

is your disk patitioned at all ? If you have at least 2 partitions then you can
use redhat parition manager you creat linux partitions on the second one (which
should be empty - make use no windoze applications need to write to it).

-- if not i'd use PM to split the 8GB into two. I'd go for 4 & 4.

RH comes with a good partition manger for splitting out empty partitions.

Ususally you'll need at least 2 - linux and swap. But its probably good practise
to have more - say one for /home and perhaps one for /usr.

Read the RH manual, or see HOTWOs on www.redhat.com for discussion of the best
thing to do.

BTW, I'd upgrade to RH 6.0 if you can as it has newer drivers etc. etc. and
Gnome which is a very good environment manager with some usueful software.

The gentleman at this URL: http://centaurs.mtk.nao.ac.jp/~avell/LetsNote.html seems to have done some work on the problem. Unfortunately, I can't read Japanese! It seems as though he's binding the CD-ROM controller card to module "ide_cs," but then mounting the card on /dev/scd0, which seems to be a SCSI device.

Now, this is a SCSI card, but it's also ATAPI. At the moment, those are mostly initials to me. But, from what little I read, it seems as though ATAPE devices should belong to an IDE controller, so why is he mounting /dev/scd0?

I recently installed Linux on my new Dell Latitude LT. So far, only two real problems that I'm hoping someone can help me with.

First, the LT has a PCMCIA laptop made by Matsushita (Matshita). I understand that it's really a Panasonic under the covers, but I cannot find a driver to support it. Has anyone else had any luck getting this to work?

Second, I can't seem to get the audio components to work. Does anyone know the proper settings (I/O, Irq, DMA) for the Crystal Semiconductor audio chipset in the LT?
