Hi all.
I need to recompile my kernel source (2.6.x) for my D600 using Debian Sarge,
can please
some of you help me giving his configuration file ".config" or whatever you
call it under your
system, especially if it is a Latitude D-series (600-800 and so on)?

Preferably as an attachment, only to my mail address if you want.

  Thank you very much.

Hello I have an Inspiron 9300 with 60GB TOSHIBA MK6026GAX. With kernel
2.4.27 it boots but PCI Express doesn't function . With 2.6.11.9 linux
does kernel panic. This is the final boot message:

VFS: Cannot open root device "hda5" or unknown-block(0,0)
Please append a correct "root=" boot option
Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on
unknown-block(0,0)

I suppose that it doesn't found hard disk. Indeed I had same problem
when installing 2.6 kernel(so I installed 2.4).

Please help me.
Thanks
Willy

What filesystem are you using? Did you compile it into the kernel (not compiled
as a module) If you are using RAID (I'm not familiar with the chipset in the
9300) you'll also need to compile in support for the controller. As far as
kernel version, I've been holding out for 2.6.12, as I've had issues with
2.6.11.x. 2.6.10 is quite stable. You may also need to verify you are trying to
mount the correct partition. hda5 should be the first partition in the extended
partition.

This is for Linux 2.6.11.5. I'm running Debian Sid, but it should be
fairly close for Sarge. This also handles *some* audio out on the
docking port, if you blacklist the modem audio:

     root:/# grep intel /etc/hotplug/blacklist
     snd-intel8x0m
     snd-intel8x1

Cheers!

Redhat 9 is a bit old, it may not have the proper driver. You could
try Debian Sarge, or Fedora, they should install with no problem.
Sarge found all the hardware on my D600.

when using ALSA, you can try alsaconf from the ALSA-utils
package.

Isn't Red Hat 9 a bit outdated?

Alas, last night I actually got almost an hour on dial-up, and googled
intensely for ways to boot a USB HD. As best as I can tell, it won't
work on my computer.

There were a lot of folks asking for similar help to what I asked, so I
am ont the only one with the idea.

I learned that no current version of Windows can be run via USB HD even
if you can boot to it.

I found a thread that says outright that Dell Inspirons cannot boot any
USB device, though other models do have that ability.

Some newer machines do have BIOS which will allow booting for USB
devices. Even those do not always run correctly for all operating
systems, due to bugs..

Most hits mention in passing that there is little one can do if the BIOS
does not support USB booting. Then, the rest of the information
involves how to set up the USB to be bootable, which I don't see as much
of a problem.

I downloaded the latest BIOS. A13. for my machine and it does not
include USB booting, according to accompanying text. It does give a 4
digit checksum for each, but I do not know how to run that function. I
only know md5sum. If I were interested, I suppose I could download it a
number of times, and see if md5sum is always the same; if so, it might
be worth risking.

I found absolutely no hits for USB boot utilities, whether for floppy,
HD, or CDROM.

That makes sense, sad as it is. First, Windows does have a much larger
number of users, and if none can be run in USB, there is much less
motivation to produce such boot utilities.

Next, newer computers will have that capacity built into the BIOS, so
again there is little motive to create such utilities.

And, apparently the main use of USB HD is for storage, not operating
systems.

So, at this point, I am apparently not going to buy an external HD, as
there is no way to use it as I intended. By the time I get a newer
machine, we will be up to CentOs 5 or 6?

Oh, well, it sure seemed like a good idea at the time. Thanks for ideas
and support.

Subject: Latitude D610 freezes when copying files
heiler75
Send Email Send Email

Hi,

I recently installed kubunut 5.04 on a D610. First, I was exited
since everything (graphics, sound, wlan, suspend, etc) worked out of
the box. Very cool.

But then I found that the system freezes/locks completely and
unpredictably every couple of hours. After some investigation I
found that I could reliably reproduce this behavior by copying files
in the background while working normally (or while watching video)
in the foreground. I used the following script, called with nice:

===
#!/bin/sh

dd bs=1024 count=102400 if=/dev/zero of=/tmp/testfile

CNT=1
while [ 1=1 ] ; do
     FNAME=`mktemp`
     echo $CNT $FNAME
     cp /tmp/testfile $FNAME
     rm $FNAME
     #cat /proc/bus/pci/02/00.0 > /dev/null
     sleep 10
     let CNT+=1
done
===

When it runs the freeze occurs about once every hour. No logs are
generated, no error messages appear. The system stands still and a
hard reset is necessary.

I tried:
* combinations of "noapic nolapic pci=noacpi pci=bios" as boot
parameters
* other kernels:
** linux-image-2.6.11-1-686 freezes immediately
** linux-image-2.6.12-1-686 from ubuntu breezy (like unstable in
Debian) seems to work a little longer, but ultimately, it also
freezes
* replacing the tg3 network driver by bmc5700 from the vendor.
* contacting Dell support.
Nothing worked.

I have the option to send the D610 back and reclaim my money. Since
I otherwise like the notebook (except for its headphone-jack that is
unusably noisy under Linux) I'd rather like to fix the problem. But
I've run out of ideas. Any suggestions or explanations of these
freezes?

With best wishes,

   Matthias

I'd try another distro before sending it back: at least to eliminate that
possibility. Won't Dell exchange your unit if it is faulty? If your system is
unusable with Linux, I can't see keeping it.

Hi,

I have also experienced kind of this problem with my inspiron 510m and Fedora
Core 2. To me it seemed that the default kernel didn't had disk DMA enabled,
so at the time of kernel configuration I choose "Device Drivers ->
ATA/ATAPI/MFM/RLL support -> PCI IDE chipset support -> Generic PCI bus-master
DMA support -> Use PCI DMA by default when available" and it solved my
problem.

But, now very few times while copying large file it gets stuck and in the
dmesg log I could see something like:

hda: dma_timer_expiry: dma status == 0x21
hda: DMA timeout error
hda: dma timeout error: status=0xd0 { Busy }

hda: DMA disabled
ide0: reset: success

I have not been able/tried to find the solution for this issue, as the
frequency of its occurance is quite low, thats why I am now not much concerned
about it.

Hi,

Thanks for the answers! I now managed to find a configuration that
prevents the notebook from freezing _and_ removes the really
annoying high-pitched noise it produces under Linux.

First, I upgraded to the latest kernel. In my case this was
2.6.12-1-686 from ubuntu/breezy.

Then I added "pci=bios idle=halt" (and _not_ noacpi, nolacpi etc) to
the boot parameters. The first entry fixed the freezes and the
second entry got rid of the noise. I'm not sure if the current
configuration uses DMA mode for the harddrive (thanks to SATA in
D610 the hdparam tool became useless), but it's fast enough for me.

I am now a much more happy Dell user. :-)

Yours,

  Matthias

PS: I'm also curious when Dell's support will answer: Over the last
four(!) days I sent them three increasingly specific problem
reports under the same service ticket. Never heard a word. Today I
sent them above workaround/fix for the problem.

Hi all,

After installing RedHat 9 onto my Dell 1150, I've noticed that there
are no drivers for the MiniPCI 1350 card. After reading the FAQ I
tried unsuccessfully to substitute the Dell card with the Lucent
Orinoco option on the Linux networking panel. That hasn't worked
either. There is one other alternative whose name I've forgotten that
allows exporting of XP settings into Linux, but I'm not entirely sure
how it works, as the tutorials address only Debian. Any input on how
to remedy the situation would be VERY welcome!

Also, I've tried repeatedly to secure my LILO. However, the only LILO
config file on my system is Lilo.conf.anaconda, not lilo.conf(I've
searched, I can't find it), and it seems that when I go to /sbin/lilo,
it tells me that it cannot find lilo.conf, and thus I cannot implement
the changes I've made to secure LILO. Any ideas about what might be
going on and how to fix it?

Thank you

Red Hat 9 is a bit old, it is only using a 2.4.20 or 21 kernel, so it
may not have the drivers for either card.
The lilo.conf.anaconda is made by the installer, so it may be the file
you are looking for. I use Grub and Debian, so I can't help you much,
but it does not stop me from trying. :P

You might have better success with Fedora3 or Debian Sarge.

I run Shrike on my Latitude CPi using an Orinoco Gold card and RH finds
it fine. .

But Shrike is several years old now, I have it as one of my multibooted
OSs because, well, just because it's good ol' Redhat. The Gold card is
pretty old too.

But you can run one of the many ports of Enterprise?Lineox, CentOS, Tao,
to name a few?and get everything you'd get if you paid for RedHat
Enterprise 4, excepting the support. I bet one of them would support
this newer card.

Not to beat a dead horse, but I CAN boot into Win98 and WinXP from a hard drive
placed in an external USB device--what I like to call a drive caddy. Like I said
before, my i8600 gives me that option at boot time. What happens is this: system
starts to boot; screen comes up with the usual press <del> to enter setup; and
if I have a CD in the drive or a USB device connected, press <f12> to boot from
? device. That menu includes an option to boot from an external USB device. That
also includes using a ram drive, stick, or whatever you want to call those
little things. My bios is A05 I think. I am writing from a MacIntosh right now,
so I can't be more accurate.

Oh yeah, I just remembered. When I put in my original Dell CD and boot my
computer, I get the message to hit any key to boot from CD. I think that takes
me into that f12 menu also. I'll pull out my i8600 later and get you some more
accurate details. -- Douglas

Hi!

We have had some ACPI issues with the M70.

No suspend/resume - the keyboard wont function after resume.

Hibernation is not working either.

Audio, video is working fine with the nvidia driver. Touchpad is also
working.

Anyone else?

Or CentOs 4, which is the free name-changed version of RHEL 4, see
www.centos.org CentOs 4 should be more tested than Fedora, though that
is based on their corporate customer needs and expectations.

I said before, my i8600 gives me that option at boot time. What happens is this:
system starts to boot; screen comes up with the usual press <del> to enter
setup; and if I have a CD in the drive or a USB device connected, press <f12> to
boot from ? device. That menu includes an option to boot from an external USB
device. That also includes using a ram drive, stick, or whatever you want to
call those little things. My bios is A05 I think. I am writing from a MacIntosh
right now, so I can't be more accurate.
>
> Oh yeah, I just remembered. When I put in my original Dell CD and boot my
computer, I get the message to hit any key to boot from CD. I think that takes
me into that f12 menu also. I'll pull out my i8600 later and get you some more
accurate details. -- Douglas

Doesn't sound to me like beating a dead horse. You would certainly know
if it works or not. I think they said it would not run the full-blown
Windows, but only an abbreviated version, rather than not booting at
all.

Interesting, thanks, not that it helps me in my case.

Hi,

I have an inspiron 9300 with the 64mB ATI X300 graphics card in it.

When I try and install Ubuntu DVD on this, I boot to the screen that
gives several options (live, expert/server or normal install) all of
them cause the same error - the screen goes to a yellowish colour
which then fades away gradually changing all colours of the rainbow
leaving a blue base screen with grey and black thick vertical lines on
the screen.

Caps, num and scroll lock function as they should, and TWO (2)
ctrl-alt-deletes will reboot the machine but I cannot find away past
this screen.

http://www.rtr.ca/i9300/ indicates that not only should the i9300 run
linux, it should/can do it with ubuntu 2005.4 as the distro.

Can anyone give my any ideas where to go from here?

Cheers in advance

M

I found a fix for this issue myself (i now feel kind of silly).

Plugging an external monitor into the laptop allowed me to
install/configure the system and it now works perfectly happily as a
laptop.

Very frustrating problem though.

Hi,
I'm trying to get the intel 900 series graphics card to work under
XFree 4.3 in debian (actually Kanotix). I've tried using the module
i810, as I understand works under XOrg, which i've tried out through
Ubuntu. But in Xfree I always get an error and can't load up
xwindows at all. The final error says:

(II) I810: Driver for Intel Integrated Graphics Chipsets: i810,
i810-dc100,
	 i810e, i815, i830M, 845G, 852GM/855GM, 865G
(II) Primary Device is: PCI 00:02:0
(WW) I810: No matching Device section for instance (BusID PCI:0:2:1)
found
(EE) No devices detected.

Fatal server error:
no screens found

----
I've tried running modprobe i810 but nothingg seems to work. In the
XFree config file, I tried setting BusID to PCI:0:2:0 as well as
putting nothing, but neither works.
Has anyone gotten this video card to work under xfree? Better yet,
in kanotix?
Thanks,
Tony

How does it support s2r/s2d? How much time works it with standart

8600 is very nearly the same as the 600m except the video. I have Slackware
10.1 running on my 600m with everything working except video under X on resume.
I'm almost certain this is because of the ATi driver. If the nVidia module is
behaving upon resume under X, I'd guess you should be pretty successful with
the 8600. Overall, I'm very happy with my 600m. The battery lasts about 4 hours
if I'm not playing games.

I have exactly the same problem in Mandriva LE2005, with kernel
2.6.11. Hardware is inspiron 8200 with ATI radeon mobility 9000. Boot
with acpi=off, suspend from console with apm -s.

It works perfectly in Mandrake 10.0 (kernel 2.6.3) with the same
settings. The only difference I can see in the logs is the following:

May 22 00:08:51 ignatius cardmgr[4983]: executing: 'modprobe -r
orinoco_cs 2>&1'
May 22 00:08:51 ignatius cardmgr[4983]: + FATAL: Module orinoco_cs is
in use.
May 22 00:08:51 ignatius cardmgr[4983]: modprobe exited with status 1

I'm using suse 9.3 on my 8600 and it kicks a$$ .... the only out of the box
work I had to do was use ndiswrapper for my wireless ... but thats because I
upgraded my wireless card if you stick with the oem wireless card everything
should work just fine ... I'm new to linux but not pc's.... I have had not
one problem with this laptop under either windows xp or linux ...
