Subject: D620 w/ port replicator and Ubuntu 6x

I am running Ubuntu 6.06 on a D620 with the port replicator (from my
old D600). Everything works as it should except for accelerated
graphics. When I use "nv" in my xorg.conf file I can use the laptop in
the port replicator and get native 1680x1050 resolution on my external
2005FPW monitor.

I installed the nvidia fglrx packages and can run the laptop stand
alone with the "nvidia" driver configured in the xorg.conf file. I get
accelerated 3D graphics and everything. However when I dock it I
cannot get the display to show up on the external monitor.

Any ideas?

Cheers,
Darin....

You could try running nvidia-xconfig while the system is docked. It
should detect the second monitor and add the needed settings into
xorg.conf. And just for clarification, fglrx is the name of the ATI
driver, not Nvidia.
You could also look in the xorg secion of the group and try some of
the conf files there.

I've attached my xorg.conf file. I do have to restart X to get the
resolution, but it is the same config as yours.

pressing F12 when the Bios comes up, should bring up a screen that
selects the boot device. If the CD still does not boot, make sure it
is clean. Sometimes a small smudge can cause it to not boot,

You may also want to check your BIOS settings. Not all BIOS's have a menu that
allows you to select your boot device during bootup. In those cases you need
to make sure that the CDROM is setup to boot and that it is set to boot from
CDROM before your hard drive.

there is no help for XP in LINUX GROUP, i think.

1- turn on computer
2- press F12 (before boot)
3- select BOOT FROM CD-ROM
4- press any key to start install...

hard-drive?????? I really want to install XP on my laptop, and
reinstall Linux on my desktop.

Is the CDROM in the drive a bootable disk. How about the CD quality. I
have faced the same problems many times and the solution happened to be
in these two questions.

All the best.

Subject: Inspiron 8000 with LCD projector NEC VT45?
candtalan
Send Email Send Email

I want to use an Inspiron 8000 with LCD projector NEC VT45, and I
started with suse 10, (installed without the VT45 connected).
It installed ok, but when the VT45 display is required (fn, F8), I
loose the display at the projector - a few binary dots lines appear at
the top of the display only, and this is not recoverable by the
subsequent toggle (fn, F8), when a similar (not indentical) display
appears on the lapptop.

Knopppix does a better job but there is a VT45 graphics resolution
issue which seems to change the size of displayed font in Open Office
Impress version 2.0. (note1).

Suse 10.1 Live DVD is good (I have not actually installled 10.1 on it
yet), although the display issue I think was still present, but when
reverting from VT45 display back to laptop display (fn, F8) the mouse
cursor appeared corrupted and remained that way until the session (X
app?) was restarted.

I would like to use linux on this laptop for presentations, and would
appreciate any comments to help move my knowledge forward -
experiences, files edit (etc etc).

Changing the projector is not a practical option just now, and I have
not yet tried out an Inspiron 1100 I also have available - but I would
prefer to stay with the inspiron 8000 if possible.

Note 1:
The VT45 lcd projector states it accepts a couple of resolutions
including 1024x768 as input and seems to convert this to its 800x600
for projection. The toggle to projector display does work ok, with
correct text sizes etc, in another widely used (non linux) OS which
shall be nameless and which I do not want.

you could try , using e.g. xrandr, to switch the X display to 800x600 before
connecting the LCD. And then switch using Fn-F8. Another way might be too
boot with the LCD connected.

Thanks I have booted with lcd connected, no obvious benefit. I will
persue the 800x600 further, elaborating on some similar (limited) tests.

Mine is a geforce4 440 Go. I use the nvidia driver
http://www.nvidia.com/object/unix.html (Latest Version: 1.0-8774).
I do not use the Fn+F8 key but I use the twinview feature (xinerama
mode). See appendix G of the doc
http://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86/1.0-8774/README/appendix-g.html
If you search in the list archive, you should find xorg.conf examples.

Anyone used either E1705 or B130 with Linux?

Tell me about your experiences. I am trying to decide between those
two laptops for my mom. Her needs are rather basic, so it does not
need to be a "pimped out" laptop.

I have heard bad rumors about Dell laptops and Linux compatibility, so
I wanted to join a group like this and get it straight from the
horse's mouth.

I use MEPIS 3.43 (Debian based, kernal 2.6.15) and KDE (3.5, I think)

I look forward to your replies.

Thanks!

Dell E1705 and Dell B130 with Linux:

I am thinking about getting one of these two laptops for my mom.
Anyone have any experience running Linux on either (or both) of them?

I use MEPIS 3.43 (kernal 2.6.15).

I have heard that Dell laptops and Linux do not get along very well,
so I joined this group to find out more information.

I look forward to any helpful replies.

Thanks!

hardware detail - 512 MB RAM, bios A32.

The install of Ububtu 6.06 Desktop is ususlly done by first running
the live CD then choosing the Install icon on the desktop. There was
no problem booting or running the live CD, except that the display
resolution remained fixed at a low value. (Similar problem when
installing a new HD with Dell original OS CDs in fact, which needed
special action to subsequently install video driver)

After initial searches and trying many guessed Ubuntu boot options
without success, I found the information necessary on the Ubuntu
forums (note 1).

After a file edit process, which was not difficult even for me as
someone who has avoided use of command line, things did display
correctly, and I am most grateful for the information referenced above.

I am not new to linux but I still find I am unsure of many non gui
actions, and other people even less confident than myself might find
this summary useful.

I was also happy to see that the immediate subsequent install from the
edited running live cd ubuntu system was also correct in its screen
display and needed no further editing of files.

A Ubuntu forum posting on June 5th, 2006 by ssnitily included the
following:

===================
Default Installing on a Dell Inspiron 1100
It's well known that the installation resolution for this laptop is
incorrect and is locked at 640x480. Since the default installer for
6.06 involves booting and running a GUI and these installation screens
are much larger than this it's very difficult to install as you can't
see what you are tabbing to and can't click on any buttons as they are
well bellow the viewable area on the screen.
===================
My Comment: as it happens, this described the problem I had.
====================
The response on June 6th, 2006 from durableapostle was on the button:
====================
Default Re: Installing on a Dell Inspiron 1100
I had the EXACT same problem. Here's what I did:

1) In a terminal window type: sudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf

2) Change your data to what I have below (actually, add this info,
<i>in addition to</i> what you already have):

Section "Monitor"
Identifier "Monitor0"
VendorName "Monitor Vendor"
ModelName "Dell 1024x768 Laptop Display Panel"
HorizSync 31.5 - 48.5
VertRefresh 59.0 - 75.0
Option "dpms"
EndSection

and in Section Screen, change the monitor line to read

Monitor "Monitor0"

3) Save, close gedit, and then restart the x drive (crtl, alt,
backspace). It should work.

4) Now, this is the part where you'll need help elsewhere... After a
hard restart, this will probably go back to the small screen. You'll
need to configure things so that this loads earlier in the startup
sequence. I had a friend help w/ this... sorry, I don't know how he
did it. Ask around the forums. At least you'll be able to easily fix
it every time until you can get help with the part I can't help you with.
=======================
My comment: I had a little uncertainty about the above point 2)
because I could see that some lines were obvious additions and one or
two seemed to be replacements.
I found that point 4) was not relevant to my need to run the live CD
and then do an install to hard drive.
=======================
With this hindsight I would now slightly re-word the posting from
durableapostle to read as follows:

1) In a terminal window type: sudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf

2) Change your data to what I have below
Section "Monitor"
         Identifier "Monitor0"
VendorName "Monitor Vendor"
ModelName "Dell 1024x768 Laptop Display Panel"
HorizSync 31.5 - 48.5
VertRefresh 59.0 - 75.0
         Option "DPMS"
EndSection

and in Section "Screen", change the monitor line to read

Monitor "Monitor0"

3) Save, close gedit, and then restart the X server (crtl, alt,
backspace). It should work.

4)If you want to continue to install, double click the Install icon on
the desktop, and proceed. My experience was that the installation
adopted the current xorg.conf values.

I have an analogous problem (Latitude D620 at 1280x80 and projectors
that only go to 1024x768).

The solution I am currently using is to have a modified xorg.conf
(called projector.Xconf in /etc/X11) that has the projector's native
resolution as its only choice in the Modes line in the "Screen"
section. After I plug in to the projector, I do

	 startx -- :4 -depth 24 -config projector.Xconf

which starts a second X session at that resolution.

Depending on your software that you plan to use for presentation, you
could also use nvidia's xinerama look-alike "twinview" to set up a
dual-screen xorg.conf, and you could set the external screen to be at
your projector's native resolution. I don't use this because I use
acroread for presentations and acroread gets confused about how big
the screen is when I use twinview (duh). However, YMMV.

In case you aren't familiar with starting up two X sessions at
once... when you terminate the "new" one, you should be bounced back
to the old one. (And you can switch back and forth by Ctrl-Alt-F7 to
get to the first X session, and Ctrl-Atl-wherever, where "wherever"
depends on your system setup.)

Cheers.

When Ubuntu first loads the small 640x480 screen, you can press <esc>
and get the boot prompt (not documented, I did it by mistake once),
from where you can enter "live vga=773" (or "install vga=773") and
end up with a 1024x768x16 screen. I still had to edit xorg.conf as
you said, tho'.

SK

PS, I'm new here, and came looking for this exact advice. thanks.

On the contrary, Linux gets along so well with Dell laptops that traffic
on this list has slowed to a crawl in the last year .. people are having
so few problems.

I have an old Latitude CPi with a 366 MHz PII processor maxed at 256 MB
and it runs Linux like a dream. And Windows version more recent than
W2K would be glacial on it. And everything works.

Hi, I recently got a Dell Latitude C400. Most stuff worked out of the
box but I'm still having some problems with a few things. All problems I
have are related to the graphics card.

Problem 1)
This is the most pressing problem as it's annoying as hell. Whenever I
close my laptops lid it makes X either crash or hangs the entire
computer. So far I've come to the conclusion that it's because some VBE
call goes berserk. Any help or ideas on why is more than welcome.

Problem 2)
Also releated to the same thing. Before my distrubution went up a
version in drivers it crashed with weird artifacts whenever i closed my
lid and ran something 3d accelerated. This I haven't found anything about.

Problem 3)
Suspend 2 Ram does work, but when I try to pull it out of the suspend
mode the monitor just goes black. Why?

[snip]
The main details are included in the messages here under the subject of
Dell Inspiron 1100 - Installation Ubuntu 6.06 Desktop
dated Sep 17, 2006

However, I also use Kubuntu and there are slight differences in what
is needed there, for example a diferent editor is available, and file
permissions are handled slightly differently.

For Kubuntu 6.06 Desktop:

using a terminal window
sudo chmod 777 /etc/X11/xorg.conf

(note the upper case X)
this removes restrictions protecting the file xorg.conf and allows it
to be edited.

I then edited the file (using kate) as detailed earlier in this thread
and restarted the xserver display with control-alt-backspace.

As it happens, I wanted something to help with doing this procedure at
any time I used the Kubuntu 6.06 desktop (live) cd in this machine -
say, for demonstrations.

So after editing the xorg.conf file I copied it to a usb stick as
xorg.conf

The edited copy of xorg.conf file resided in the usb stick and could
be seen as

/media/sda1/xorg.conf
because the usb stick was automounted as sda1 onto directory /media

I then used kate editor to create a new file containing the two lines
sudo chmod 777 /etc/X11/xorg.conf
cp /media/sda1/xorg.conf /etc/X11

and for convenience I saved this also onto the usbstick, say, as
inspiron1100-fix-kubuntu

Now, after booting with the live cd I can insert the usb stick, and
copy the two lines of text into a terminal, and press return.
Then restart the xserver. More convenient than editing the file again etc.

These are usually related to the 3d driver and suspend.  Some 3d drivers do not play well with suspend.  Therevarious workarounds, including not using the 3d driver if you don't have to.  What may work depends on what card and X version you are running, but you can try using the non-3d version as a quick and easy way to test if this is the problem.

Clarification. I was using the "alternate" not the "desktop" iso.

Ditto that. I am writing this on an Dell E1705 with SUSE 10.1. The only
"downside" is the Broadcom wireless chip set that it uses. Its easy to get up
and running with NDISWRAPPER however. I'm looking forward to the next release
of SUSE because the newest Linux kernel version will have direct support for
the Broadcom wireless chip sets.

Its running with all the cool XGL eye candy. I did have to tweak the xorg.conf
file a little bit to match the 1900x1200 resolution of the screen too, but
that is easy stuff. Although ATI now has much better support under Linux, I'm
still an NVIDIA fan boy. So I'm using the Nvidia graphics driver.

If you get one and have troubles just give us a shout here and we'll help you
out.
