Hey

I like to buy a laptop with best video card for both
windows and linux applications. I will be using more
graphical applications both 3D and 2D.

Please suggest me if anyone familiar with new video
cards both nvidia and ATA, . really this might help me
to decide.

This is going to be a very personal decision since you can assemble so
many combinations of identical hardware and still see differences. But
here is a made-to-order link that should help:

I just discover: http://www.dellideastorm.com/
It says that Dell employees are monitoring IdeaStorm to gauge which
ideas are most important and most relevant to you.
A lot of ideas are linked to linux and opensource...
For example, I promote:
- No OS Preloaded
- Provide Linux Drivers for all your Hardware
- Linux based PDA

Hi. I'm so glad I found this group and hope that someone has already
overcome the only obstacle I've found that I can't seem to fix.

Here's my issue:

The Intel 2100 wireless card is detected and setup fine. However, it's
disabled in Linux only.

I have the 2100 enabled in the BIOS. I've installed both Ubuntu 6.10
and SuSE 10 using Gnome with the same results, so it's definitely a
hardware issue. It even works in the Windows XP Pro OS that is dual
booted with Linux.

The Fn+F2 button combo does nothing. When I press that, I see unknown
key pressed messages in the message log under SuSE, and something very
similar in Ubuntu.

Anyone know how to enable the Intel 2100 card in Linux? Again, the
driver is loaded just fine. The Network Connections Panel icon shows
Disconnected, and Wireless disabled.

I've searched all over the Net looking for the solution to this issue
to no avail.

Thanks for any ideas!

You might want to try poking around https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs/WirelessCardsSupported.

This card is fully supported in Ubuntu. To see if the driver is loaded you should type "lsmod |grep ipw2100"in a terminal. It should return that the card's module is loaded.

Your card in Ubuntu is most likely listed as eth1 (perhaps wlan0). See if you can see any wireless networks by typing "iwlist scan". If wireless network information is returned then the card is active and working.

Have you tried any of that yet?

A simple search at http://ubuntuforums.org on intel 2100 brought me the following results

James,

Have you tried:

modprobe ipw2100

and then, as superuser:

dhclient && ifup eth0 (or eth1)

Just a thought,

Good luck,
CB

Here's how it's done...

Get specifics about the device as shown below:

$ sudo lsusb -v

(output edited to show only interesting fields)
Bus 003 Device 003: ID 413c:8114 Dell Computer Corp.
Device Descriptor:
idVendor 0x413c Dell Computer Corp.
idProduct 0x8114
iManufacturer 1 Novatel Wireless Inc.
iProduct 2 Novatel Wireless EXPD CDMA

To use the device, one must load the "usbserial" module with specifics
obtained from above.

$ sudo modprobe usbserial vendor=0x413c product=0x8114

If successfully loaded, you'll just be thrown back to a prompt. Check
/var/log/messages for information as to which device name was select
for use.

i.e. usually "/dev/ttyUSB0" or "/dev/ttyUSB1"

In Suse, and other distros, you can also add the module to the list in
/etc/modules to load it automatically on boot: "usbserial
vendor=0x413c product=0x8114"

Once you have your device loaded, just create a ppp0 connection using
your favorite dial up utility.

"pppconfig" works for me:

$ sudo pppconfig

Select "Create a connection"
Provider Name: verizon
Select "Dynamic DNS".
Select "PAP" as the Authentication method
Username: phone_number_here@...
Password: anything... "password" for example.
Speed: 115200
Select "Tone"
Phone Number: #777
Manually define device as "ttyUSB0", or whatever was shown in
/var/log/messages.
Finish and save changes...

I also add the following two lines to /etc/ppp/peers/verizon to
prevent annoying automatic disconnections due to a lack of lcp responses.

lcp-echo-failure 4
lcp-echo-interval 65535

I have also seen other configurations that set both values to zero.

To connect, simply type the following:

$ sudo pppd call verizon

Again, look at /var/log/messages for all the nice pppd connection
output. You should receive an IP address within a few seconds, and
you're ready to surf.

$ ifconfig ppp0

Have fun.

I recently received a Latitude D610 through work.
It has a 1.73Ghz Pentium M Processor with 2GB of Ram.
It has a Dell Wireless 1370 WLAN mini PCI card, but I cannot get it

This PC dual boots between Suse 10.1 and XP Pro SP2, and I know the
wireless works. I can even get the Wired ethernet connection to work,

Hi there.

I've got an expresscard modem for 3g verizon wireless service and
Mandriva 2007 Powerpack dual boot on a Dell XPS M1710.

I've found next to nothing regarding Mandriva 2007, let alone any
linux at all on M1710s on the net, and saw some help for the minicard
version of my modem in this group.

could somebody help me out? what do i need to do to get this bugger
working? Is it the card that's unsupported or the expresscard bay
itself? When i try to set the connection to the "3g" setting it tells
me that there's no device of that sort detected.

thanks!!

It's actually quite easy to get the 3g cards working in Linux. I
posted a quick how-to on the dell wireless forums back in January.
Actually, someone just the other day posted it here... but the
original link can be found at:

http://www.dellcommunity.com/supportforums/board/message?board.id=si_wireless&me\
ssage.id=30802

I use Ubuntu, but the principle is the same. Load the "usbserial"
module, using product and vendor ID as variables. You then use any
PPP configuration utility and dialer to use your wireless connection.

Hope this helps.

you think you could post it here for me?

also, the only thing i saw in the archives about 3g cards was one
about an pci-express minicard. mine is an expresscard that plugs into
the side of the laptop. yes they both connect to 3g networks but does
the different type of hardware make a difference?

These cards (internal and external) present themselves as USB devices.
if you run "tail -f /var/log/messages" and insert your card, you will
see exactly what I'm talking about. Since they are all really just
serial devices, the "usbserial" module works for virtually all of them
the same way.

Here's the post from the dell site:

------------

Here's how it's done...

Get specifics about the device as shown below:

$ sudo lsusb -v

(output edited to show only interesting fields)
Bus 003 Device 003: ID 413c:8114 Dell Computer Corp.
Device Descriptor:
idVendor 0x413c Dell Computer Corp.
idProduct 0x8114
iManufacturer 1 Novatel Wireless Inc.
iProduct 2 Novatel Wireless EXPD CDMA

To use the device, one must load the "usbserial" module with specifics
obtained from above.

$ sudo modprobe usbserial vendor=0x413c product=0x8114

If successfully loaded, you'll just be thrown back to a prompt. Check
/var/log/messages for information as to which device name was select
for use.

i.e. usually "/dev/ttyUSB0" or "/dev/ttyUSB1"

In Ubuntu, and other distros, you can also add the module to the list
in /etc/modules to load it automatically on boot: "usbserial
vendor=0x413c product=0x8114"

Once you have your device loaded, just create a ppp0 connection using
your favorite dial up utility.

"pppconfig" works for me:

$ sudo pppconfig

Select "Create a connection"
Provider Name: verizon
Select "Dynamic DNS".
Select "PAP" as the Authentication method
Username: phone_number_here@...
Password: anything... "password" for example.
Speed: 115200
Select "Tone"
Phone Number: #777
Manually define device as "ttyUSB0", or whatever was shown in
/var/log/messages.
Finish and save changes...

I also add the following two lines to /etc/ppp/peers/verizon to
prevent annoying automatic disconnections due to a lack of lcp responses.

lcp-echo-failure 4
lcp-echo-interval 65535

I have also seen other configurations that set both values to zero.

To connect, simply type the following:

$ sudo pppd call verizon

Again, look at /var/log/messages for all the nice pppd connection
output. You should receive an IP address within a few seconds, and
you're ready to surf.

$ ifconfig ppp0

Have fun.

I had some issues under Core 6 with the D620 BCM wireless. Use this
website for info on the BCM chipset:
  http://bcm43xx.berlios.de/

I was able to get it to work using ndiswrapper
(http://ndiswrapper.sourceforge.net/), but it conflicted with the
nVidia kernel module (not the one included with X11R6), dying after
about 10 minutes of usage. At that point, there was some ugly method
for disabling IRQ probing I had add to the initrd line in Grub; but
the D620 has a 1470, not 1370. This changed allowed the wireless and
nVidia modules to cooperate but killed all chances of using the power
management (suspend, etc). You just have to pick your poison, I
guess. I was "forced" to start testing Vista shortly after, so I've
since lost my notes. :(

I'm not very fluent in Suse or Ubuntu, but maybe this will at least
give you a push in the right direction. /var/log/messages
and 'dmesg' will give you any module loading errors during boot.
Remember, Google is ur friend. ;)

Core 6 and Red Hat Enterprise required a firmware update to be
applied to get the cards to work. This rpm was included in their
respective "Extras" repositories. I would assume that Suse and
Ubuntu would have something similar in their apt repositories.

I couldn't ever get the Fn+F2 key sequence to work, however.
Enabling and disabling had to be done through the OS (ifup and ifdown
at the command line).

See here for details on the project:

There is firmware that MUST be loaded into the wireless card by the OS
(linux kernel). See if the DMESG |grep ipw2100 produces message
saying that there was a load failure of a .bss or similar module. For
security a wpa-supplicant module MUST be also loaded and ndiswrapper
is also needed. I have a DELL 9200 with 2200BG card almost identical
to 2100 card in your dell. Is the light showing the WiFI LED on? Make
sure that the kernel is 2.6.18 or higher. There are some kernel
complation options that will cause a failure of wireless
communication. CHECK http://oss.intel.com/en-us/

Try these and you may get somewhere. I can't understand why LINUX
programmers have not gotten the message that CENTRINO+LAPTOP is a
huge supply of computers that HAVE to be relegated to WINDOWS
because WINDOWS can connect easily!!!
Good Luck

Hello,

I have overheating and slowdown issues under Dell C400
with PIII 1GHz CPU.

What happens - after reboot everything is fine laptop works
on full power (I'd written simple program that
makes CPU work hard and test run time).

The CPU temperature according to:
cat /proc/acpi/thermal_zone/THM/temperature
Is about 48-54C.

When I start running heavy loads - it heats up to 90C
and then I see a message in /var/log/acpi

received event "processor CPU0 00000080 00000001"
notifying client 2604[105:108]
notifying client 2881[0:0]
completed event "processor CPU0 00000080 00000001"

After that the performance of the computer is dramatically
reduced and the temperature goes down to 60C under load
and 45-50C without. Program that used to run about 11s
now runs about 1m30s (!).

When I reboot and load i8k module (modprobe i8k)

I do not get to 90C but the performance reduced at lower
temperatures and it not recovered back - the simple
program that run about 11s now runs about a minute.

Several questions:

- I understand that it is important to reduce clock in
order to not overheat the processor, but how to get
it back when there is no load and the temperature
   is normal?

- I can see a small fan at the bottom of the laptop
but I don't see it is spinning? Does this mean it
is broken or I do not have correct settings for
   i8k driver?

- I can figure out that the CPU frequency is changed
in all these cases and in case I plug in/out the
AC power. However I do not see any change in
/proc/cpuinfo. Is there any way to change this
behavior or other way to check CPU frequency?

- How can I control manually CPU clock frequency?
(If it is possible at all.)

Thanks,

Artyom

Can't help with the other questions, but I have a similar model, and I can
definitely hear the fan when I'm running a long compute-intensive program.
I also (IIRC) don't get CPU temps that high, or see slowdown for thermal
protection, so broken fan would be my first guess.

Ok, thanks, so it seems that the fan is broken.
Meanwhile I had reduced in BIOS the AC mode from
maximal performance to maximum battery and I work
on 750MHz instead of 1GHz even on AC. Running this
mode I get maximum on heavy long loads to 65-68C
So it do not creates problems but it is 25% peformance
reduction.

If I was able to adjust the CPU frequency according
to temperature thresholds:

1000MHz - 60 normal work low temperatures
  750MHz 60 - 80 reduce under loads
  185MHz 80 + critical temperatures

But cpufreq-set do not work and I /proc/acpi/
there is no support for changing CPU freq.

Thanks,
Artyom

All,

I recently installed Xandros Linux 3.0.3 on my Dell Latitude D610.

I have it set to dual boot between XP Pro and Xandros. Everything
went fine, except Xandros does not see my Dell 1370 Wireless LAN card.

It sees my Ethernet card, and I can connect through it, and my
wireless works in XP Pro.

I tried NDIS Wrapper with the bcmwl5.inf driver, but the wireless card
still does not show up in my Network Control panel.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, as i would like to move
completely away from XP, but can't until my wireless works!

Thanks,

Trent

Hello,

I had found the solution for clock control according
to the temperature of the CPU.

I had to load following modules:

speedstep_ich
cpufreq_stats
cpufreq_powersave

and then I had installed cpufreqd that had given me the solution

I just adjusted a little temperature ranges in /erc/cpufreqd.conf
and thats it. Even at heavy long loads I get maximum to 75C and
the clock is reduced to 750MHz and normally it works on 1GHz at
temperatures of about 55C.

Maybe you've solved the problem by now, but did you try giving the
correct "root=" option as it says above?

My .config isn't necessarily going to do you any good, but I can send
it to you if you really want. Do you have the right filesystems
compiled into your kernel (not as modules) or them included in an
initrd file?

Note that if you're not using an initrd, you will need to compile
support for your ide chipset into your kernel, and ditto for your file
system.
