I don't know I can't get back into the partitioning part of the
installation. Windows fdisk does not report any problems. Is there a
way to use linux fdisk before you begin the installation process?

Sergey,

I tried mine about a month ago but it didn't work either. I have
the same experience as you (no signal). I've never tried it under
windows. I'll be watching this thread to see if anyone else
responds because I would like to use the S-Video/Composite out.

Glad to hear it's working now... :)

You might need to recompile PCMCIA to match your 2.4.7 kernel.. the
sources are at http://pcmcia-cs.sourceforge.net

Yes, boot off your install CD and tell it to load a rescue system, this
will run a live system off the CD, and let you run fdisk on the hard
drive.

A possibly related problem i'm dealing with for s2d on my I3800 (Mandrake 8)
is that when i attempt to Suspend to Disk, the BIOS responds that the s2d
partition already has an unrestored session. I know this isn't the case
because i wiped and initialized the partition myself.

Any suggestions?

You might try using mks2d or phdisk (whichever one is relevant to your
system/bios) to reinitialise the partition... I'm not entirely sure, but
that's probably what I would try.

I know this has been talking about before, but I have a I8k with the nvidia
card and it won't play DVD video. I get the pretty blue screen (with xine)
and then sound in the background. Is this a driver problem?? 'cause I have
this exact same setup on my desktop and it works fine, but on the laptop it
won't work. I also tried the latest tars of xine which check for libXv at
compile I believe yet when I run the program it says...can't find any video
output devices or something along those lines. Basically I'm asking, has
ANYONE gotten dvd playback (full or non-full) screen to work??

I've got about a 7 hour car ride to vegas in an hour or so and I REEEEAAAALY
want DVD playback w/o installing windows =)

Thanks in advance,

Hi all,

For a number of days I've been trying to get X working on my new laptop
i8k
The highest resolution that the laptop can handle is 1400x1050
I have installed redhat 7.1

I already downloaded the latest drivers from nvidia.
I also followed their installation instructions
When X is started, it seems like there is a synchronization problem
In the /var/log/XFree86.0.log-file I can find no errors

In this mailgroup I found a number of new model-lines. I tried them, but
it is still not working.

Is there somebody with a similar configuration that can send me his/hers
XF86config????

Thanks in advance

Maurice

Subject: Debian, X, and kdm on a Latitude C600

I am running a dual boot system, Win2K and Debian
Linux with at 2.4 kernel on a Dell C600. On the Linux
side, when I log out of KDE as a user (it hasn't
happened yet as root), instead of returning to the kdm
login screen, the LCD screen S-L-O-W-L-Y goes black,
fading from the botttom center in a semi-circular
pattern up to the top. The system is frozen at this
point--even when using an external CRT I cannot switch
the display back to it--so I have to shut down the
system manually and keep my fingers crossed that
nothing fatal has happened to my hard drive.

Is the problem with X? I have tried every XF86Config
file that I can find on this list and elsewhere.
Perhaps the problem is that it is a very new, 1GHz,
C600, and one of my friends with one claims that my
display is nicer than the one on his 750 Hz machine,
so I should be using a different configuration? Or is
X fine and should I be submitting a bug report to KDE?

If this has happened to anybody else (or if you know
what to do about it even if it hasn't), please let me know.

this seems to be a driver problem - the only way to get video

Hi,

I have a Dell Inspiron 8000 with NVIDIA Geforce Go2 and
ActionTec MiniPCI combo card and installed SuSE 7.2 on it.

Unfortunately I have troubles with the built-in ethernet.
In 10Mbit mode it works fine. But with 100Mbit transmitting
data last terrible long.

Due to this problems I bought a noname PCMCIA ethernet card
with a tulip chip.

I put the built-in ActionTec in 10Mbit mode and run a firewall
on it for the case I am away on business and run the PCMCIA card
in 100Mbit for the in house network.

But here is the problem: As long as the eepro100.o driver for the
built-in ActionTec is loaded, the PCMCIA card is also terrible slow.
It has the same troubles.

ifconfig says that there are no lost packages.

I found out, that booth ehternet cards use irq 11. When I remove the
eepro100.o driver the PCMCIA card works. Thus this it seems to me that
the eepro100.o driver handles that shared irq wrong.

How can I force the PCMCIA card to use a different interrupt?
(disabled kernel PCMCIA support and use the pcmcia-cs-3.1.27 package).

How can I convince the built-in ActionTec to work in 100Mbit mode?

Best regards,

Franz Hollerer

Hi,

I have a Inspiron 8000 with NVIDIA Geforce Go2 with SuSE 7.2 on it.

I installed the driver from NVIDIA. But they have some known bugs.
e.g. the X server must not be restarted otherwise the system crashes.
Unfortunately that is exactly what kdm does.

Is there I way to use the original XFree86 drivers? Does someone
has an example config file for it?

Best regards,

Same problem here :-( I hope it works with the news driver Nvidia is
about to release.
But I can play DVDs successfully with xine when using XShm, though not
in fullscreen mode. You can also try ogle.

Check how kdm is started on your SuSE system. I had the same problem on
my RedHat system and had to change the following line in /etc/inittab:
x:5:repawn:/etc/X11/prefdm -nodaemon
to read:
x:5:once:/etc/X11/prefdm -nodaemon

No, AFAIK even XFree 4.1.0 does not support the Geforce2Go.

Hmm, I also have the built-in ActionTex with the eepro100 and no
problems at all. Maybe your switch/hub doesn't do the autonegotiation
right?
Check with mii-tool what it reports.
Also what kernel are you running? Here it works with 2.4.7.

I want to install Linux Mandrake 8.0 on my Inspiron 8000 but I can't
find the file mks2d.exe mentioned in FAQ on the Dell site. Where can I
find this program?

I also have this problem at my Inspiron 5000e with SuSE Linux 7.2
(and had this with older versions as well).

It seems for me, that the LPT-port sends interrupts and the linux kernel
does not know anything about this port.
I switched off the interrupt of the LPT-port in the BIOS and the message
disappears.
Now I have other messages about interrupt 5 :-)
They disappear when I load the module for the soundcard...

I think this is a general problem, when linux got interrupts from parts
which it doesn't know about (yet).
But I'm not 100% sure.

Hi,

my tip is also to buy it... even if 1600x1200 is to high for normal
font sizes, you can still use bigger fonts or change to 1024x768
for software that does not support it (makes the display a bit
unsharp, but still quite okay).
And for the software that supports setting the fontsize, it is the
best display I've ever seen on a notebook.

I think the downsizing is also best for the 1600x1200 display. I am
pretty sure that 1400x1050 does not look so good if downsized.

it seems to me that this is a common problem. I also tried to
use it and even didn't get it to work with Win 2000. I cannot
ad an external monitor and therefore I also cannot use it to
display the video there (as far as I understood, this is how
it should be done under Win2k...)

For that reason I have not even tried to get it running under
RedHat 7.1 with the nVidia 1251 driver.

If anyone has it working - I would also be interested in getting
it working. What am I doing wrong for Windows and what steps
are necessary for Linux?

Don't know about W2k - I ordered my I8k with WinMe. It works there.

Hi,

the thing you are probably missing are the entries in the
modules.conf file. Have them not around, but they are posted
on some of the websites around describing how to get the I8K
running under Linux.

I also had the same problems until I somewhere found the
information that somethings needs to be added to modules.conf.
The XF86Config-4 is not enough!

Hope you can find the necessary info now, if not, give me a
message and when I'm home I'll look for them.

Have also RedHat 7.1 but have 1600x1200. But as I know that there
are also XF86Config files for your screen resolution.

Only message is: Can't find screen (or something similar, right?)

see above - find the modules.conf statements that are essentially
to get it running!

Hmm, I have been using my I8000 with the Actiontec card with
Redhat 7.0 for quite a while, with no problems.

I did have autonegotiation problems with a Linksys tulip
based card in my old Sony VAIO. Make sure you have the
latest drivers, I had to use developmental drivers from
scyld.com to get autonegotiation working properly.

What does the other side of the connection indicate? Are
there any errors shown by "netstat -i"?

Or the tulip driver does - hard to say from the description so far.
Is there anything in the logs?

I suspect it is working in 100 bit mode, but the autonegotiation is
failing on either the NIC or the switch/hub. This should result
in errors being detected on at least one end of the connection,
since one side will be operating in full-duplex (and thus not
listening for collisions) and the other side will be in half
duplex and getting errors such as late collisions.

It should be on the Dell System Disk which came with your laptop, or
downloadable from http://support.dell.com/ (enter using your unit's service
tag code. It's a very useful site for Dell computer owners.)

If your computer's drive has not been formatted or partitioned since it
arrived from Dell, the partition that mks2d would create is already on the
disk, and you won't need the mks2d utility unless you reformat the entire
disk before installing Linux.
