Hi all,

I'd like to inform you that OSS (www.opensound.com) has released a commercial
sound driver for Maestro 3 based sound cards.
I have a Dell Inspiron 3800, and it works perfectly, even though they say it's
beta.
I'm sure it's interesting for a lot of people around here.

Cheers,

Arkaitz.

If you were I would throw myself at you. I'm going to try it right now
:) No the throwing-part, the driver-part :)

Try setting the "intern_disp" or "extern_disp" options
for the Device settings. There should be two lines as follows:

# option "intern_disp"
# option "extern_disp"

Just uncomment the relevant one for your display.

I've had similar problems using various CPi models, and that method
has worked for all up to my current CPi R400GT with the NeoMagic
256ZX board.

Note - for the 256, it appears that if you comment out both
it tries to sync for the TFT, and if you leave both uncommented,
it also tries to sync for the TFT. This caused the same problems
you described when trying to suspend one screen.

Cheers

Kev

I can't get XFree86 working on my inspiron 5000. I use the Mach-64
server but I don't know very much about the modes and I think the
problem is there. Does anyone has a working XF86Config file ?

This one gives me 1400x1050 on my 5000 with 15" monitor. Note: You must
use vga=2 at boot prompt.

Thank you so, so much. It's very comforting to know that there are
people such as yourself who share their success stories with the rest

what to do with it.

Thanks again.

Subject: Latitude LSt sound (nm256av/nm2200) freezes machine
simon+egroups@...
Send Email Send Email

Hi, I recently bought a Latitude LSt and I can't seem to get sound
support working. I've upgraded BIOS to A04 since I noticed some
audio-related fixed, but no changes.

Dell web pages says this machine have a NeoMagic MagicMedia 256AZ and
a AC97Codec but this doesn't seem right, when I boot it says 256AV.
Also, Win2000 device manager also says 256AV, and with a "NMA2 Codec".

Redhat 6.2's sndconfig autodetect a MagicMedia 256AV (nm256.o) but
freeze the machine when it's loaded.

OSS/Free soundconf autodetect a MagicMedia NM2200 but also freeze the
machine when it's loaded...

OSS/Free also did have a NM256AV NMA2 driver, but I've tried all
combinations of IRQ/DMA channels without luck. Neither Win2k nor the
BIOS seem to print the IO address.

Here's /proc/pci:

   Bus 1, device 0, function 1:
Multimedia audio controller: Neomagic Unknown device (rev 32).
       Vendor id=10c8. Device id=8005.
Medium devsel. Fast back-to-back capable. IRQ 10.
       Prefetchable 32 bit memory at 0xf7800000 [0xf7800008].
       Non-prefetchable 32 bit memory at 0xfea00000 [0xfea00000].

Anyone with this machine?

There is a page at http://www.divisionbyzero.com/laptop/, but it
uses nm256 which just freeze my machine...

Any help appreicated.

I have a CPia300 ST and sometimes the nm256.o
also freezes my machine. I have narrowed it down
though to cases where the nm256 seems to have
not been reset/shutdown properly??. Specifically
if I don't shut down win 98 properly and then
boot up into redhat 6.2 the machine hangs at
nm256.o. In all cases I just had to reboot into
windows and then do a clean shutdown and then
booting bback into rh6.2 solved the problem.

Hello,

I just got my Dell Latitude CPxJ650GT & tried to install Redhat 6.2
wihtout the docking port & got essentially nowhere (blanks screen, or
one with some vertical lines in the case of 6.1), apparently
because of the LCD problem. The docking port is in the mail so
I should have it soon. Anyway since you're now experienced---for
better or worse---with Redhat 6.2 on this system, could you tell
me:

(1) Did you ever get it to run correctly outside of
     the docking station?
(2) If so, how?
(3) If so, how do you switch between the two?

Thanks,

Frank

Thanks,

Frank

As suggested here by Roman, I have manged to install RedHat
6.1 and 6.2 onto CPx J650GTs using the text based install
on the LCD.

To get X to work on the LCD without problems, I had to download
a later Mach64 server for XFree86 from the XFree.org website.
I didn't bother with the rest of the XF86 installation, but then
reran Xconfigurator.

After that it was OK.

To switch between the two, I normally reboot, mainly because
it's either docked at work, or standalone out of work.

Cheers

Kev

Hi All,
I have one of these Dell CPx J650GT notebooks, I found it's usable but I have
found a few annoyances and I was wondering if anyone had solved/worked around
them.

Firstly, it suspends fine from the console, but using apm under X (3.3.6) is
a disaster :) When suspending the machine it will just lock up with a blank
screen requiring a power cycle. Has anyone tried using apm with xfree4? (and
does it get rid of the sparklies?)

It works fine under 2.2 kernels but I normally run 2.4 series kernels, I
recently started using a c/dockII docking station rather than a port
replicator and found that the scsi/ethernet devices don't appear. Fixes?

I'll skip the sound, the oss driver isn't quite ready and our source driver
doesn't work ;)

There's a nice kernel module for toshiba laptops, is there one for the
dells? In particular it would be nice to be able to (un)dock the machine on
the fly.

that's one of the few problems i have been spared of. however i remember
reading some information related to a similar problem on the inspiron

copy the redhat files (base and RPMS) to your hard drive, the RedHat manual
should tell you how to do.

I don't have a Latitude, but my Inspiron comes with a cable that can be used to
connect the floppy drive to the parallel port. As far as I can tell, this is
controlled in hardware and will not be affected by what operating system you
use. Does the Latitude have something similar?

The latitude series is the same way. There is a cable that plugs into the
parallel port, and the other end into the back of the floppy. Note this
cable will only work with the floppy, it WONT work with the CDROM. With the
LM series, there is only the port on the side for the media bay, and I dont
think it came with the cable to plug in the floppy to the parallel port. I
would try copying the info off the redhat CD onto the hard drive. Otherwise
you could pick up a parallel port/PC card CDrom which should work, but will
add a level of complexity to the Linux install.

Alternately, if you have a Cable Modem, xDSL, or other LAN-based internet
connection, you could try a network install from one of the various Red Hat FTP
mirrors. All you need is a boot disk. Depending on your connection, it might be
easier than copying the CD to your hard drive. For a server, I recommend
ftp.cybertrails.com, and the directory is /pub/redhat/redhat/redhat-6.2/i386.
