For 16 bit, don't use 16 bit. Use 15 bit. Macintosh "Thousands" is actually 15 bit, not 16 color. startx -- -depth 15 (or is it -bpp 15?) should do it...

Thanks, setting to 15 bits solved the problem but 24bpp ? i tried typing login and xinit "blindly" and X works! it is the console that isn't working at 24bpp!...
