Maybe vobcopy and tovid plus tovidgui can help? I am quite sure that
they are all in Ubuntu's repository, otherwise GIYF.
vobcopy makes a verbatim copy of a movie DVD except for the CSS
encryption (it even preserves the no-skip regions - ugh). tovid allows
you to (relatively) easily recode a 9 GB DVD to fit on a 4.7 GB disk.
Provided, of course, that I understand correctly what you wrote
above...
