keep hanging in there coen. i installed 5.3 about a month ago. i didn't have
too many problems with the initial installation itself, though i had a heck
of a time getting my mouse to work until i figured out what i'd forgotten.

you can edit the configuartion files with a text editor, like vi or emacs.
emacs is pretty easy to use, especially in x (xemacs.) you can find the
commands for emacs on page 379 of your suse book (at least in my english
one.)
alot of your configuration can be done through yast, though, so check to see
if that option is possible before bashing your head into the wall anymore
...:).

if your modem isn't responding to atz, then my guess is that you either
don't have the path set up correctly, or you've got the wrong irq's or
something.

if you didn't install any gui's or anything, personally, i'd recommend doing
that. it makes it alot easier to learn with. once you get an idea of what's
supposed to be going on, then you can reinstall and start from scratch, with
a little experience under your belt.

the suse book is pretty good, but parts of it are not set up wonderfully.
(like having the info on text editors towards the back of the book.) there's
also a suse mailing list that's very helpful...you can sign up at suse's
website.

SuSe has a marvellous config/admin utility called YaST, which to a large
extent removes the need to manually edit config files, which is one reason
I'd recommnd it to a newbie like yourself. It would help us to help you if
you told us what you were having trouble with.

Your modem problem - it does not matter which ISP you use, since ATZ is a
basic modem reset command and nothing to do with any online service. Run
YaST / System Administration / Network config and make sure that your modem
is set up on the correct port - this should have been requested on
installation. Also, if you use an internal modem, check it isn't a Winmodem
which relied on Windows for it's intelligence. I run SuSE 5.2 - check the
manual entry for "Modem" - in my book this is page 172

Finally, calling anyone stupid is , well, stupid ! We all had to start
somewhere - I was in your shoes 6 months ago.

OK, I've used YaST to configure PPP. As far as I can see I've followed every
step in the book. One problem I encountered was that my ISP isn't listed. That's
not so hard to overcome, by using generic and entering my own info. But when I
run /etc/suseppp/scripts/ppp-up generic all I get is +++ATZ

After that nothing happens for about a minute and then I get the prompt again.

So, like the book says, I swithed to the second console and ran tail -f
/var/log/messages

The output:

Stumpie pppd[150]: ppd 2.2.0 started by root, uid 0

The nothing happens for about a minute and then:

connect script failed
exit

And after that I get:

Stumpie kernel: PPP: pppline discipline sucessfully unregistered

>Your modem problem - it does not matter which ISP you use, since ATZ is a

Well, problem is my ISP doesn't use phonelines, but the TV cable system. The
modem is connected to my serial port, and in Windows it works just like any
other modem.

Funny thing is: in minicom it'll respond just fine to ATZ.

And it starts dialling on ATDT4 (4 is the phonenumber for my ISP).

It sais modem="/dev/ttyS0" which is correct, because in DOS/Windows my modem is
on COM1.

First, what I would try is use minicom and try using /dev/cua0

Since your using a cable modem I would also recomend checking out the
cable modem howto at www.linux.org

Hi,

I need to upgrade form redhat 4.2 to 5.1
The 5.1 cd is on it's way, but........
Will the cd know it's an upgrade or will I lose everthing
on the install. ?
Do I just do autoboot ( as in a norm install) and it will sense a
previous installation on the hard-disk and just upgrade.

What do I do.

Thanks...

David,

When you run the Red Hat install program it will ask you if you have a
current installtion that needs to be upgraded, or whether you wish to
install a 'virgin' system.

ok?

I have recently been trying to install redhat Linux but I also want
to keep windows on my machine. I have been following all the
instructions
that I can possibly find but I am getting this message:

"Not enough free memory between 90000h and 9ffffh, maybe you have
some zombie programs, try to reboot, if this does not help, try to
find out what driver occupies this space."

I have tried rebooting, and it has not helped, I hope that one of you
can.

Thanks.

Below is a direct extract from the ppp help pages on SuSE web site detailing two
instances of dial-up failure. Hope this helps. If not, try the package ezppp
which can be found on many ftp sites. This creates scripts to your requirements
after you feed it your connect info.
Hope this solves your problem . . . . . .

PPP: Modem does not dial

Symptom:
ppp does not work, because the chat script does not dial.
Cause:
After a reset the modem needs a small delay before it reacts again on
commands.
In Syslog (/var/log/messages) some messages like the following can be
found (these are just examples) :

Dec 14 11:40:00 RMR kernel: PPP line discipline registered.
Dec 14 11:40:00 RMR kernel: registered device ppp0
Dec 14 11:40:00 RMR pppd[617]: pppd 2.2.0 started by root, uid 0
Dec 14 11:40:01 RMR chat[620]: timeout set to 45 seconds
Dec 14 11:40:01 RMR chat[620]: abort on (NO CARRIER)
Dec 14 11:40:01 RMR chat[620]: abort on (BUSY)
Dec 14 11:40:01 RMR chat[620]: abort on (NO DIALTONE)
Dec 14 11:40:01 RMR chat[620]: abort on (ERROR)
Dec 14 11:40:01 RMR chat[620]: send (+++ATZ^M)
Dec 14 11:40:01 RMR chat[620]: expect (OK)
Dec 14 11:40:02 RMR chat[620]: +++ATZ^M^M
Dec 14 11:40:02 RMR chat[620]: OK -- got it
Dec 14 11:40:02 RMR chat[620]: send (ATDT123456^M)
Dec 14 11:40:02 RMR chat[620]: expect (CONNECT)
Dec 14 11:40:02 RMR chat[620]: ^M
Dec 14 11:40:47 RMR chat[620]: ^M
Dec 14 11:40:47 RMR pppd[617]: Connect script failed
Dec 14 11:40:47 RMR pppd[617]: Exit.
Dec 14 11:40:47 RMR chat[620]: alarm
Dec 14 11:40:47 RMR chat[620]: Failed

Everything works fine until +++ATZ is reached. Then a message send
(AT.... ) and expect (CO..) appears. Instead of this only ^M
(carriage-return) is sent twice. No "beeping" of the modem can be heart
even though normally it should dial in that moment.

Solution:
It will work if you insert a \d in front of the second AT.

...
ABORT "NO CARRIER"
ABORT BUSY
ABORT "NO DIALTONE"
ABORT ERROR
"" +++ATZ
OK \dATDT....

Sometimes even the initialization command ATZ is sent too early. This
can be cured by a \d right after +++. Dialing is then possible without
additional delay, e.g.

"" +++\dATZ
OK ATDT0191011

Credits: Detlef Postler (Detlef.Postler@...)
Similar error but completeley different cause
(Applies to S.u.S.E. Linux: Version 11/95)

Symptom:
ppp via CIS does not work because the chat-script doesn't dial.
Cause:
In the chat-script ppp-up delivered with the november 95 CD comments
with a # are included by mistake.
This is not accepted by the chat-program or it waits until a #-sign is
sent by the modem which doen't happen very often.

You will see something like this in /var/adm/sylog:

Feb 13 22:25:07 paddys pppd[1967]: pppd 2.1.2 started by root, uid 0
Feb 13 22:25:07 paddys pppd[1968]: Connecting with </usr/sbin/chat -v -f
/etc/ppp/ppp.chat>
Feb 13 22:25:09 paddys chat[1969]: expect (#)
Feb 13 22:26:54 paddys chat[1969]: alarm
Feb 13 22:26:54 paddys chat[1969]: Failed
Feb 13 22:26:54 paddys pppd[1968]: Exit.

Solution:

The correct script:

TIMEOUT 5
ABORT "NO CARRIER"
ABORT BUSY
ABORT "NO DIALTONE"
ABORT ERROR
"" +++ATZ
OK ATDTcistelefon
CONNECT \r\n
ame:--ame: CIS

Dec 14 11:40:01 RMR chat[620]: send (+++ATZ^M)
Dec 14 11:40:01 RMR chat[620]: expect (OK)
Dec 14 11:40:02 RMR chat[620]: +++ATZ^M^M
Dec 14 11:40:02 RMR chat[620]: OK -- got it
Dec 14 11:40:02 RMR chat[620]: send (ATDT123456^M)
Dec 14 11:40:02 RMR chat[620]: expect (CONNECT)
Dec 14 11:40:02 RMR chat[620]: ^M
Dec 14 11:40:47 RMR chat[620]: ^M
Dec 14 11:40:47 RMR pppd[617]: Connect script failed
Dec 14 11:40:47 RMR pppd[617]: Exit.
Dec 14 11:40:47 RMR chat[620]: alarm
Dec 14 11:40:47 RMR chat[620]: Failed

Everything works fine until +++ATZ is reached. Then a message send
(AT.... ) and expect (CO..) appears. Instead of this only ^M
(carriage-return) is sent twice. No "beeping" of the modem can be heart
even though normally it should dial in that moment.

Solution:
It will work if you insert a \d in front of the second AT.

...
ABORT "NO CARRIER"
ABORT BUSY
ABORT "NO DIALTONE"
ABORT ERROR
"" +++ATZ
OK \dATDT....

Sometimes even the initialization command ATZ is sent too early. This
can be cured by a \d right after +++. Dialing is then possible without
additional delay, e.g.

"" +++\dATZ
OK ATDT0191011

Credits: Detlef Postler (Detlef.Postler@...)
Similar error but completeley different cause
(Applies to S.u.S.E. Linux: Version 11/95)

Symptom:
ppp via CIS does not work because the chat-script doesn't dial.
Cause:
In the chat-script ppp-up delivered with the november 95 CD comments
with a # are included by mistake.
This is not accepted by the chat-program or it waits until a #-sign is
sent by the modem which doen't happen very often.

You will see something like this in /var/adm/sylog:

Feb 13 22:25:07 paddys pppd[1967]: pppd 2.1.2 started by root, uid 0
Feb 13 22:25:07 paddys pppd[1968]: Connecting with </usr/sbin/chat -v -f
/etc/ppp/ppp.chat>
Feb 13 22:25:09 paddys chat[1969]: expect (#)
Feb 13 22:26:54 paddys chat[1969]: alarm
Feb 13 22:26:54 paddys chat[1969]: Failed
Feb 13 22:26:54 paddys pppd[1968]: Exit.

Solution:

The correct script:

TIMEOUT 5
ABORT "NO CARRIER"
ABORT BUSY
ABORT "NO DIALTONE"
ABORT ERROR
"" +++ATZ
OK ATDTcistelefon
CONNECT \r\n

Hello all. I ran Redhat 5.0 on my old computer. It was an old 486
with 4 megs RAM so Linux didnt perform too well. I got a new
computer, and I stupidly ordered the Cheapbytes Linux mondo pack, with
Redhat 5.1, slackware, suse, debian, and Caldera. I tried installing
most of them, and they won't support my new video card. It's a
Diamond Stealth II G460 AGP2x card. Can anyone tell me if any linux
dists support it? If not, is there any way I can get x-windows to
work without buying a commericial xfree86 server? Thanks

How to get XFree86 to support AGP:

1) wait a few months/years until somebody else writes the program for you
2) write it yourself
3) some combination of the above

it's work, but it's good work

Helpful suggestions, I guess:

1)Wait???? I want Linux NOW. It's a better OS than anything.

2)Write it myself? If you knew how good I was at programming, you
would laugh at that suggestion.

3)See 1 & 2.

I thought that since Redhat 5.2 was coming out soon, that it would
support my card, but it still doesn't. Damn. Oh well.

If your problem is hardware support, then it is not better than
anything. I would HOPE that you could use standard VGA drivers, which
will at least give you a working X envioronment.

This could be a good place to hone up those programing skills. It
certianly is the way it is with the Linux comunity, you either wait and
hope, or you go and do it yourself. A lot of people do find that there is
something in particular that they want, so they write what is needed for
that. Their programing skills may not have been that great, but they get
a product together that works.

Try running msd from Windows - this will show all the used areas of memory. This
range sounds like it could be a BIOS sitting there - check with the reported
resource usage in Windows. Also, do you gave a graphics card which uses shared
memory on the system board - this may cause these problems too. At which point
do you get these messages - on boot, trying to run XFree etc.

You could also try StarOffice (complete office suite) which is available for ftp
download. Both this and WordPerfect 8 for Linux are pretty heavy downloads, so
it may be worthwhile finding a CD distribution - StarOffice is available for
about £16 I believe.

Are you using loadlin?

I've tried that too and it didn't work. I recommend using a third party
bootmanagers such as the OS/2 bootmanager from IBM. Works great with me and
you don't have to boot Windows to boot Linux...

Check with SuSE - http://www.suse.de/e/ - who write new X servers & feed them
back into the XFree development tree. They are probably your best bet for new
hardware support in non-commercial servers. You could also try running a basic
SVGA server, which should work with any SVGA-compliant hardware.

Linux Systems Labs http://www.lsl.com Slackware 3.4 has a copy of
Word Perfect 7 on it (although I have never tried it myself).

Their web site shows Slackware 3.5 (which does not have this
particular goodie included) but maybe they have have a few left.
It's not that old.

Hope that helps

I'll second that recommendation to use IBM OS/2 Bootmanager.

Of course you should own a copy of OS/2 to avoid breach of copyright,
after all the Linux community has enough for free :)

I got a second hand copy of Warp-3.0 complete with reg-certificate
for twenty quid last year from PC-Mart magazine.

One word of warning... If you are in an OS/2 session and leave it
intending to boot into Win95 then use the reset button as OS/2 does
not reboot in the same way as Linux does. Win95 will hang with an
error message saying something about not being able to load a vital
vxd file (?). Using reset forces a memory check.

Maybe you have noticed that when you leave Linux for another OS then
a full memory check is performed.
That's good of Linux to do things properly when it exits as well as
when it boots.

Now this is important...
The partition on which you intend to install Linux _must_ be
formatted by OS/2.

First use fips or a similar program to 'non-destructively' make some
space for Linux.

Using the OS/2 installation diskette and diskettes 1 and 2, boot up
with the installation diskette, put in diskette 1 when prompted and
choose 'advanced installation', choose 'select a different drive or
partition' (this brings up OS/2 Fdisk), add the Linux partition to
the boot manager menu, set it installable, press F3 twice to exit
fdisk. (Don't go deleting any partition in OS/2 fdisk, you'll lose
all data).

You should then be asked for diskette 2 which will offer to format
the partition. HPFS or FAT, either will do just so long as
bootmanager knows that it has formatted the drive.

As soon as the format has ended and you see 'Loading system files...'
you can [ctrl][alt][del] and quickly put in your Linux boot disk.

Within Linux fdisk change the partion-type to type 83. Do not delete
and recreate the partition otherwise you'll have to go through all
the above again.

Any questions, just ask. I've performed this procedure over twenty
times in the last year!

I agree with all that but, you can get boot manager with a copy of
"Partition Magic" from Power Quest. This allows you to resize,
move, create, delete, etc... OS/2 HPFS, DOS FAT & VFAT, and NTFS
partitions on your hard drive. It has many other features that I
have used very successfully too, like converting FAT to HPFS.
I use this package in conjunction with LILO to allow be to boot
SCO Open Server 5, OS/2 Warp 4, DOS (Win 3.11&95), Slackware Linux
3.5 all from one machine! You should check it out!!!
I think they also have a downloadable program to allow re-sizing
of EXT2FS partitions in Linux, but I'll have to check on that.

ok, thanks, I will try that. I think I should mention this also, I am
not sure of what the specific message was. When it was probing my
card, It said something about not being able to detect the RAM on my
card or something to that effect. Do you have any suggestions?

Try running XF86Config or XF86Setup and forcing the server to use whatever value
you tell it - it may be simpler to try the graphical XF86Setup first, then if no
luck try the text/menu-based XF86Config. Even if you choose to use the basic
SVGA server you should still get it to see the memory unless your kernel doesn't
support AGP. Check the usual web resources - Freshmeat, Slashdot - & search for
info on AGP support.
