The Anti Tobacco campaign at UIU was held

| The
announcement came as a surprise. Professor Chowdhury Mofizur Rahman,
the Pro Vice Chancellor of United International University, Dhaka
announced that he would give up smoking from the moment, although he
have had almost a full packet of cigarettes that he brought the day
before. Like this announcement, more fun, excitement and obviously the
commitments took place at the occasion of the anti tobacco campaign at
UIU auditorium, on 16th June. The programme "The declaration of
completely tobacco free campus of UIU" with the slogan "Be Libra, Be
Free, Free from Tobacco" was organized by Bangladesh Open Source
Network (BdOSN) and was supported by World Health Organization (WHO),
Bangladesh Country Office. Around 300 students, teachers and guest
enjoyed the programme with three guest of honour � Professor Dr M
Rizwan Khan, Professor Dr M Zafar Iqbal and Dr M Mostafa Zaman. Dr
Iqbal Kabir of WHO programme presented the basic information and some
dangerous fact about tobacco. He mentioned that Tobacco is the single
largest reason for the death of people around the world. Mr Munir Hasan
conducted the session. In his speech, Dr Mostafa Zaman briefly
explained the anti-tobacco law in Bangladesh and urged that besides the
law enforcement, the mass awareness is also very essential for a
tobacco free nation. The programme started with a video speech by Dr
Samlee Plianbangchang, Regional Director, WHO. In his speech, he told
about the theme of the programme of this year, No Tobacco Day � Tobacco
Free Youth. In his speech Dr Zafar Iqbal shared his experience with
cigarettes and told the students about its danger. He said that the
cigarettes did not only harm the user, but it also did a lot of harm to
the people around thus depicted its two fold effects in the society. Dr
Rizwan Khan announced that the UIU will be totally Tobacco Free campus.
After the announcement Professor Zafar Iqbal handed over some Tobacco
Free signboards to the VC of UIU. The students participated in a spot
quiz on tobacco and open source and were awarded with book and Ubuntu
CD as prize. The programme was arranged as a part of BdOSN's month long
anti tobacco campaign. --by BPR
