1. What's happened on DivX Digest since the last newsletter?

It's been kind of quiet since the last newsletter, especially in the
last week.

RadLight 4.0 Alphas have been floating around and it looks like
RadLight 4.0 should be here pretty soon (the third Alpha release is
already available). The RadLight/Ad-Aware issue has tainted the image
of RadLight somewhat, but if you look beyond that, there is still
quite a decent player there.

A new version of DubMan was also released sometime last week. DubMan
gives you an enhanced version of VirtualDub/NanDub's job processor -
basically allowing you to leave your computer overnight, and let
VirtualDub/NanDub do all the video conversion for you using a DubMan
generated script.

And just updated a few hours ago, a new version of Knoton´s API DivX
Player and ViPlay was released. Both take a very different approach
to the "multimedia player" category, API DivX Player focusing on
simplicity (84 KB file size!!) and ViPlay focusing on features (58
supported subtitle formats!!). Both are freeware (don't you just love
free software ... the legal kind, of course).

A new DivX Beta was also released this week, dubbed "Manihi". This
follows DivX "Kauehi" that I mentioned in issue 33. It has the same
licensing as "Kauehi", in that you get to use it for a 30 day trial
period, and as long as you want if you have the purchased version of
DivX Pro. And in case you're wondering where DivX.com get these
codenames for their DivX releases, they are all names of Polynesian
islands (more precisely, the "Tuamoto Archipelago" - there was also a
version of DivX Beta called "Tahanea").

2. What's happened on DVD Digest since the last newsletter?

If you thought there was very little activity on DivX Digest, then
there is even less activity on DVD Digest - there was only three
updates in the two week period since the last newsletter!!

In this quiet period, a new version of eXtremem Movie Manager was
released, a new software called ImTOO DVD Ripper was added and a new
version of the VideoLAN Client was also released.

ImTOO DVD Ripper is one of the many commercial DVD backup/conversion
tools that have been recently added to DVD Digest. Like I mentioned
in the last issue, all commercial software added to Digital Digest
must have a trial version (or must be well known enough to not need a
demo), and ImTOO DVD Ripper is no different.

VideoLAN is probably one of the better-known open-source multimedia
players that can handle DVD playback. The "LAN" part of it's name
comes from the fact that VideoLAN can be used to playback multimedia
files over networks, which is becoming more and more important as
people (like me) wire up their homes for home networking.

That's it for this issue ...

3. What's happened on DVD±R Digest since the last newsletter?

It's been quiet as well for DVD±R Digest, but there were still some
notable additions.

Due to the tightening of European digital copyright laws, in that
they have now copied the controversial (and in some cases, plainly
unfair) US DMCA legislation, I've had a few "dissident refugees" from
Europe submitting DVD Shrink guides to us in the fear that they will
get into trouble with their respective authorities. While the DMCA is
in fact far reaching, I personally don't believe it has any power
(yet) over written material, such as guides on how to use DVD Shrink.
The distribution of DVD Shrink itself, however, is another matter ...

Anyway, I have added French and Swedish DVD Shrink guides. There are
actually two Swedish DVD Shrink guide, one for version 1.x of DVD
Shrink and another for the vastly different version 2.x.

On the news front, the Recordable DVD Council (RDVDC) has finally
figured out that compatibility is a major problem when it comes to
the popularity of DVD recordables. Their solution to the problem
comes in two steps :

1. Creation of a "RAM" compatible logo for all DVD-RAM compatible
devices
2. Establishment of the Compatibility Working Group to ensure
interoperability of products using the RDVDC-supported recordable DVD
formats : DVD-RAM, DVD-RW, DVD-R.

So apparently, the solution to compatibility is to make a logo and
start a new group, which then only guarantees compatibility between
formats that were produced by the same group and is supposed to be
compatible with each other in the first place. Give me one DVD
recordable format, please!!

5. A simple thank-you and some concluding words

Just a note to thank all the thousands of people (6800+ at last
count), including you, who joined the Digital Digest LiveUpdate list.
I've spent quite a bit of time developing this site, and making it
what it is today, and really do appreciate your continued support.

I hoped you enjoyed another issue of the LiveUpdate newsletter. You
won't have to wait seven more months for the next issue, I promise :)

Thanks!!
