3. DVD Trading - dvdloc8's Swap Meet

dvdloc8 has just launched a new section to their site called "Swap
Meet". As you are well aware, I founded and built dvdloc8, and "Swap
Meet" is one of the recent features I have added to the movie/disc
database site (can't call it a DVD database anymore because it now
also includes UMD, HD DVD, Blu-Ray discs). Swap Meet basically
allows you to trade DVDs online using dvdloc8's private messaging
system. The advantage is that you don't need to share your email
address with potential traders unless you are absolutely sure they
are legit. Also, your messages are only visible by you and the
person you are trading with, thus ensuring privacy. Your trading
list is tied into your collection list and to dvdloc8's database, so
apart from entering the title of the DVD you have and want to trade,
you don't need to enter any details about the disc itself.

Swap Meet also allows DVDs to be sold, you can add a description,
upload photos and set the condition of the item - think of it as a
classified ad.

And like everything else on dvdloc8, it's all free of course.

The service has just been launched, so there won't be many users
with active trade lists yet - be one of the first to start a list
and start trading.

4. Software Spotlight: Media Player Classic

The term "bloatware" is frequently associated with Windows Media
Player (WMP) - it's slow to launch, has tons of features you
probably don't need, and despite the various minimized interface
modes, it still takes up too much space. But it wasn't always like
that. WMP 6 was the last version of Windows Media Player that
retained the classic, efficient interface whose origins can be
traced back to the media player bundled with Windows 3.11. While it
didn't have CD burning, internet connectivity and all the other new
features found in version 7 or later, it played back media and it
did it very well. So well, that even when WMP 8 and 9 came out, many
were still hanging onto WMP 6.

Taking advantage of the fact that people wanted the simple interface
of WMP 6, but with some of the advanced playback features that
weren't available back in the days of WMP 6, Media Player Classic
(MPC) was launched. MPC has a similar efficient interface of WMP 6,
but with advanced playback features that were aimed directly at the
DivX/XviD community. This includes subtitle support, custom zooming,
DVD support, multiple audio support, advanced filter support and
much more. Best of all, it comes in a single executable file with no
need for an installer/uninstaller. And of course, it's free and open
source.

MPC is strongly linked with ffdshow (also known as the filter that
plays back everything), and with H.264 becoming more popular by the
day, MPC+ffdshow has become a good combination that will handle
pretty much all the media you can throw at it.
