If you live in the Terrell, Texas, exchange, please note the
following about the local calling area. Local Calling Guide
indicates that the 551 and 563 prefixes can call the Irving, Texas,
exchange locally. This is not correct; it is long-distant, unless
you subscribe to "Local Plus" extended area calling. Also, the
phone company (SBC) incorrectly lists the local exchanges for which
prefix 524 can call. Listen carefully to what you're being told is
local, because half of the exchanges are actually long-distant.
This may have changed within the last year since I called. But
double check to make sure. Anything else I discover I'll post here.

Thanks for the correction. Do you live in Terrell?

While on the topic of Texas, the Alltel tariffs say Valley Mills
(Alltel prefixes are 252-932 and 252-934) has two-way extended metro
calling into Waco using a separate prefix. So far I have not been able
to find out what prefix that is. Does anyone here know?

Thanks

Please tell how the information on the local calling guide is

I am using http://members.dandy.net/~czg/search.html to get
information for my ISP. I wanted to know if there are any other
sources or companies out there that you use that you could recommend
to me. Do you personally do this kind of work or can you point me
in the right direction. Looking to get access number database. If
you can let me know where you get your info on your web site I would
love to grab it.

It is. The prefix part is fairly easy, as NANPA
(http://www.nanpa.com/) and CNA (http://www.cnac.ca/) provide
downloadable extract files. The local calling information, however,
comes from tariffs, which are available for most of the larger
companies. The information in the database reflects the calling areas
of the incumbent carriers unless otherwise noted.

Most of the tariff documents are in PDF format, so the only way to get
information out of them is to read through them, which takes time and
introduces the possibility of errors. There are commercial database
vendors that specialize in this type of work, but their products
aren't cheap.

As mentioned in my reply to "carlwright_98" there are several database
vendors that provide this information for a fee. If you need
absolutely accurate information for commercial purposes you should, of
course, use them. Try http://www.tariffs.com/ or http://www.ccmi.com/

I collect the local calling information for my site from telco
tariffs, many of which are available online.

Yes, I do live in Terrell. You wouldn't believe all the exchanges
the 524 prefix is said that can call, but actually they are long-
distant. For example: Waxahachie, Midlothian, etc. Another crazy
setup is the fact that Terrell can call the Canton exchange, but not
Wills Point.

All I can think of is this person must have access to tariffs or
something through the PUC of Texas. Although I've found very few
errors, it's pretty accurate and up to date, if you ask me.

My ISP is EV1, and my access number in Terrell, TX, is 469-821. I
searched that exchange on Local Calling Guide, and it showed me all
of the exchanges through which that carrier has exchanges for in
other cities. If you know the exchange for your ISP, use the area
code/prefix search engine on Local Calling Guide. It should show
other exchanges in other cities for that ISP. You may note that,
for example, I searched my ISP exchange. THe name of the company
did not say "EV1." It said "Tex-Link Communications." Keep this in
mind...

Sir:

The difference between EV1 and Tex-Link is that EV1 is the ISP and Tex-Link
is a local telephone company. EV1 buys phone numbers from Tex-Link.

In the Alltel Phonebook:
"Valley Mills has an optional calling plan to the Waco Metropolitan
exchange. According to SWBT's Local Exchange Service Tariff, towns
in the Waco Metropolitan Exchange include Axtell, China Springs,
Eddy, Ghoulson, Hallsburg, Leroy, Lorena, Mart, McGregor, Moody,
Rosenthal, South Bosque, Waco and West." I would think this is one
way optional service since there is no EMS exchange serving Valley
Mills.

Scurry has the same wording as Valley Mills. Looks like they have
one-way metro service optional to Dallas Metro. They also don't
have an EMS exchange.

But for Acton, Cresson, Godley & Tolar, the only different wording
for these places is that they can "make and receive unlimited calls
to and from the Ft Worth Metro exchanges". They do have EMS
exchanges.

Hope that helps!

Thanks, that's helpful. According to Alltel's tariff, Scurry has
one-way optional metro calling to Dallas Metro, and
Acton/Cresson/Godley/Tolar have two-way optional metro calling (with a
separate NXX) with Fort Worth Metro. So far, so good. However, it also
says Valley Mills has two-way optional metro calling (again with a
separate NXX) with Waco Metro. The SBC tariff also mentions two-way
metro calling between Waco Metro and Valley Mills. I guess this proves
the tariffs don't always reflect reality...

I've also discovered that the Terrell local exchange can also call
the Royse City local exchange (972-635) locally. It is not listed
on Local Calling Guide with the other exchanges. What's funny about
that is Forney is 9 miles west of Terrell and Royse City is 14 miles
north--Terrell can call all of Royse City locally, but Forney 972-
552 is long-distance (if the Terrell exchange is 551 or 563).

Also, since the Scurry exchange was mentioned, both Southwestern
Bell and Verizon offer an extended-area calling plan which allows
calling to the Fort Worth metropolitan exchange, as well as
Greenville, Wills Point, Denton, etc. When I lived in Garland, I
didn't know Scurry would be long-distance, whether or not I had the
extended area calling or not (except for those who are included in
their local calling area). I would have thought that since I could
call all the other areas locally, I could call Scurry. I'm not sure
what the exchange name is on this one, but 817-373 was long-distance
for me when I subcribed to the extended-area calling from Terrell.
Ironically, both Scurry and 817-373 are both Altell.

According to the SBC/SWBell tariff, Terrell local (972-551, 972-563)
can call Royse City EMS (972-636) locally, and Royse City local
(972-635) can call Terrell EMS (972-524) locally, but neither local
exchange can call the other one locally.

817-373 is in Rio Vista, which is long-distance to both Scurry and
Terrell.

This gives you a phone number that can receive voice mail and fax
messages,
and you can also have them sent to your email address.

I used that already; however they have a too long for
my needs welcome message.
I thought there may be other options.

Thanks anyway.

BTW, I found a pay phone in Montreal that still
displays the call number; when called, a fax is
answering the phone, and Bell displays PUBLIC PHONE
notice on the screen.

Northwestel is asking its customers in the small Yukon community of
Marsh Lake (867-660) whether they want extended area service to
Whitehorse. Residents currently do not have any local calling outside
of Marsh Lake itself.

Until March 1999, Marsh Lake shared a prefix with Tagish (867-399),
but calls between Marsh Lake and Tagish were (and still are) long
distance. I seem to recall that it only received a separate prefix
because of a Y2K-related limitation in Northwestel's billing system.

Can anyone tell me where I can find a complete list of 105 and 108
test lines for all Bell's end offices? These test lines allow to do
quality testing for noise, echo, levels.. etc. Thanks!

Well, it's free, so you take what you get. Try searching for "free
voicemail" and see what comes up.

Not quite sure I understand - do you call the payphone from another
payphone, or perhaps a cell phone, and watch the display on the
payphone that is being called? Many payphones (though generally not
Bell Canada payphones) are configured to answer with their internal
modem; see http://www.payphone-directory.org/phones.html for details.

Generally No, although a few phones seem to accept them. In
Vancouver, a software bug in some switches allows pay phones to be
called via long distance even though they can't be called locally.
