Compression to make vocals louder?   Message List

Message posted by Alek Felstiner <alek@...>:

I'm working with an AT 4040 mic, plugged into an M-Audio Fast Track Pro
interface, in Logic Express.

I've recorded software instruments, guitar, and bass. Right now the master
mix is up towards the red. When I record the vocals they're completely
drowned out. The input volume is set high enough, and the amplitude is up
near the clipping point, but the volume is very low.

I don't want the whole mix to be that quiet. I'll go back and re-adjust the
other instruments, but what can I do with the vocals to make them louder
without losing quality (which is what happens when I just crank up the gain
on the compressor function in the channel strip). I haven't worked with
compressors at all, and I'm new to mixing etc., so any advice would be
appreciated.

Alek
