... I've had this happen on a 2136 for no obvious reason - It was recoverable by putting the chip in ISP mode (P0.14 low on reset) then reprogramming via JTAG....

It sounds like your application uses a PIN that JTAG needs to use. Your application was running and had control of that pin. (Most likely setup as an output)....

Certain levels of CRP can cause the JTAG to NOT work see. UM10139 . If you want to be sure that CRP is not causing the JTAG problem you should have it turned...
