Mint Tea

SEE-1 report for Thursday, August 1, 2002

It is a bit overcast this morning which takes some of the edge off
the heat -- it's only 86 at 8:30 AM -- but the temperature will
probably reach its regular 110-115 in the sun by midday.

The guineas are doing well, although I didn't mention that we lost
another the day before yesterday. I went looking for them at
bedtime, calling and clapping about 8 PM to put them safely in their
coop -- I hadn't seen them for several hours. When I found the
little band, they were coming home along Millennial Way and there was
another one missing. So now we have 10 of the last batch of 12,
plus !Xoola and Capt. Mendez who are late adolescents, and Ishie, the
only one who survived from last year. The 12 younger ones stay very
close together all day. Ishie tends to go off on her own. Sometimes
they follow her around or nap with her under the mobile home, but
generally they are off hunting elsewhere in the yard on their own
agenda.

In other news, I had surgery yesterday to remove a bone growth from
my left heel. It aches miserably but I can get around. Some
malevolent elements are predicting it may take several months to heel
since the surgery included raising and then stapling part of my
Achilles tendon. I also got new glasses last week with a slight
astigmatic and slight spherical correction for my left eye -- no
correction for my right eye which is very nearsighted since I did
some exercises to get it that way in adolescence so I could use it
for reading without correction. For decades every time I saw an
ophthalmologist I was told that was a very disabling condition.
Nowadays people pay a lot of money for laser surgery to have one of
their eyes made nearsighted so they can read effortlessly with one
eye and see clearly in the distance with the other. There is no
difficulty with depth perception, by the way. I've played tennis a
lot -- and the trouble with my game was not lack of depth perception -
- and driven a car several hundred thousand miles (you get used to
the clunk of bodies by the roadside).

I even plan to get a hearing aid next week -- my hearing is reduced
70% in my left ear (it's OK on the right). So I will be fully
bionic, fully patched and equipped and ready for our fall schedule of
rocket launches.

I should report our hydroponics triumph. We now have two gigantic
melons -- larger than golf balls. And the mints are doing well. If
you take a little pinch of one and crush it between your teeth, the
taste is very gratifyingly strong. It only takes a few leaves to
make a nice cup of mint tea. In fact, if anyone wants a bag-worth,
let me know and I will send it to you -- true SEE-1 hydroponics mint
tea -- spearmint, pennyroyal, peppermint, or pineapple mint, or some
combination -- I like the pennyroyal best. (I just hobbled out to
the garden, by the way, to make sure I was giving you the latest and
most accurate report on the mints and melons, so, you see, I really
can get around on this foot. I still expect a lot of sympathy for
it, however.)

A big Texas "Howdy" to you, John.

It is interesting to hear of your activities, John, and particularly
exciting to learn you may be joining us here at SEE-1 in October.

As to helping out -- financially or otherwise -- take a look at our
"Projects" list (the URL will be coming along to you shortly -- Jack, could
you send it?), and see what particular projects interest you. I will be
happy to discuss with you any that you see.

I am going to forward your e-mail and CC this response to <luf-team> (at
Yahoo groups) so all of our active members will see them.

Welcome, and please let me know personally if there is anything I can do to
facilitate your connection with our oganization.

Hi all

Back in late April I built a shell for a cabin and
exhibited it at a Living Green Expo in St. Paul.

I was going to reassemble the cabin, which measures
21' 4" x 21' 4", and has a 14' x 18' loft, as a model
for sales purposes, but if anyone in the LUF is
interested, I'd like to offer to sell it to SEE for
$10,000. The price is for the shell, which includes
roof, walls, foundation, exterior sheathing, and
flooring.

If there is interest, I'll take $5000 down, and $5000
upon delivery, and cover the deliver cost. I'll also
take a week off to help assemble it.

Let me know if there is any interest.

It was a pleaseure to speak with you on the phone this morning, John. I am
delighted to hear of your interest and the resources you can bring to bear on
our mutual vision.

Youasked me to outline the expenses that would be involved in someone moving
to SEE-1. Here goes.

rent is $250 per person per month -- this goes into the "SEE-1 Capital Fund"
for improvements to the property (a visitor pays $10 a day for a shorter stay)

in addition, each resident can expect utilities expenses -- electricity,
water, septic -- of about $50 to $200 a month depending on whether one uses
electric heating in the winter and a lot of air-conditioning in the summer (a
visitor pays $5 a day)

propane for heating and cooking may also enter into the picture -- running
$25-$50 a month

the phone can cost anything from $15 a month on up -- mine runs about $50 --
I use modem Internet access

getting an ISP connection can cost as little as $10/mo -- or up to $70 if you
get high-speed satellite access (which comes with hundreds of channels of TV,
by the way)

I figure it would cost about $15,000 to put in a third mobile home -- used --
large enough to serve as a "dormitory" for our next 6 residents. This would
include moving it to the site, pad preparation, and utilities hook-up.

I would expect another $5,000-or-so for moving and site preparation expenses.

Oh, there is one significant expense I forgot to mention on the phone. The
present two mobile homes use the same aerobic digester, but we will need to
put in a socond one when the next mobile home goes in. An aerobic digester
costs about $5,000 plus about $2,000 for installation -- it has three
septic-tank-size tanks plus some pumps, timers, and controls.

Newcomers should be aware that there is a surprisingly difficult emotional
adjustment in the transition to moving here. Perhaps that is true of any
move to any new home -- but in addition this place is quite isolated (one
really can't function here without a car, for example), some of the
neighborhood is rather "rough," and then there are occasional snakes
(rattlesnakes, copperheads, and water moccasins) and malevolent bugs
(scorpions, wasps, fire ants, tarantulas, black widow spiders, etc.) to
contend with. I don't mean to scare anyone -- it really is safe and
beautiful -- but it isn't just one more city (or suburban) street.

Since I've raised the ogre, let me say that I have not seen a rattle snake in
the 18 months I have been here. I've heard of two people getting bitten by
copperheads in Bastrop -- both were working in their gardens. I've seen
maybe a dozen small scorpions (and I've learned that they are no worse than a
bad bee sting). I have, I admit, been stung by scores of mosquitos and
bitten by dozens of fire ants -- and I've gotten sunburned -- and cut and
bruised myself working -- but that's about it.

As to works in progress, I hope Jack will forward to Mat the URL for our new
"projects" board that we have been putting a lot of work into lately. It
conveys a lot of useful information about what we are up to, and what we hope
and plan.

I hope I have answered more questions than I have raised with this email.
Please feel free -- and your associates as well -- to communicate with me
directly or with luf-team (on yahoo-groups) with any questions of comments
you may have. In fact, I would feel more comfortable if I saw some
give-and-take dialog with our members. There really is so much to say -- and
to do.

Regards, Richard

Boy! All this talk of eating bugs makes me think we could use SEE-1 as a
training ground for prospective Survivor contestants. So far, every season
has had a week 2 immunity or survivor challenge that involved sampling local
cuisine. We should highlight that in the brochure. :-)

Do you think you could catch and sell 1,000 or 2,000 a day at perhaps a cent

That would gross $10 or $20 -- before labor and transportation and other

Question folks. Didn't we have some on-line versions of the various images in
TMP and others? Any idea what happened to them?
I was going to attempt to put together something for the Space Elevator
conference on August 12-13th.
I'm going to try and base it on the information for Aquarius from the TMP and
our disscusions and especially on Erics feed back on the orginal suggestion.

Even if we don't get it read at the conference, (none of us are going I'm
suspecting :o) we can maybe get it posted to the website.

Thanks

What about a big butterfly catching net. Just run through the field and your net
should catch all sorts of the little critters with minimal effort(besides the
running, sorry Richard).

Personally I like the idea of an Electrostatic Vacuum Accumulator (for)
Grasshoppers (and) Undesirable Entomologies, or E-VAGUE (specific device to
be invented later -- sort of like the "player to be named later").

However, the image of skipping through the field waving my butterfly net
(presumably wearing white shorts, a monicle in one eye, and a pith helmet)
certainly does have its appeal.

Capture? CAPTURE!? On creative, get cages and breed the little
suckers. Or just fine mesh off a certain area of the land and let
that be the grasshoper domain. Then sell them to the local bait shop
around there. You may even come up with a one way out device that
attract the creatures out of the cages area, and into a holding
cell/bucket, were like water you just pick them up cap it so they
don't just out, and off to the market you go!

Well.. lets see.. say you only have peak season of grasshopers to
make it worth your while 3-4 months out of the year, otherwise known
as harvest season. Say you could get at min. 100 grasshopers a day.
If the going price was 20 cents then you'd have $20.

1 day, 100 grasshopers = $20
31 days, 100 grasshopers per day = $620
4 months, 100 grasshopers per day = $2400

Now not to bad and you could do weekly or monthly runs to sell them.
But then thing to come up with is a way to automate this so you don't
have to do much more than collect/count and sell.

I envision some kinda of circle or hex cage pattern with a big white
bucket in the center of this. You just have to collect a large amount
of grasshopers at first and fill this area up. Then come up with a
way to attract them outside the cage to where they fall into the
bucket. And of course a small storage unit perhaps in the palace shed?

Hey, Randy. Yes, we do have those images. One member, in fact, posted
three such pics of aquarius on the luf-websites group. I am currently
using one as my wallpaper. A member, Yassur something-or-other, did
an Aquarius fly-by movie in VRML years ago (1996 or earlier?) and
Ross copped some good images of the flyby from that. they're posted
at luf-websites. you can sign up and check the messages from late
july (maybe even August 1). His user name is Turmith so check for his
posts and the subject was something about Aquarius images. More are
available if you need or want.

Basically the majority of them are pictures fromt he TMP which we have
permission to use, i also have some others and will forward them along as
well.

What kind of connection are you on, should i just zip them up? Or do you
want me to put out a webpage so you can pick and choose..

Hard data needed here.

I'm betting more like 1 or 2 cents per grasshopper
but push the imagined "take" up to 500 or 1,000 a day
minimal expenses -- say $3 or $4 (tools, supplies, transportation, storage,
etc.)
and, again trying to think low, two hours of work to catch, pack, transport,
peddle
so the person doing this gratifying, high-tech labor is netting maybe $3 an
hour (while the seasonal supply and the as-yet imaginary demand last)

Anyway, here's a job for a Web-sleuth -- how much does a grasshopper bring on
the open market? (In season -- of course we could dry or freeze them to take
advantage of an off-season demand -- that's a joke, btw -- that would
probably lower the harvester-marketer's take to $2 and hour after expenses)

It's always hard for me to tell if these "trinket" businesses are suggested
with tongue in cheek or really without any data and without one's
order-of-magnitudometer going.

Anyway I'll say once again that there isn't anything that could be made (or
caught) at SEE-1 cost-effectively that someone else isn't already doing -- or
would be doing within hours.

Services at-a-distance -- maybe. Goods -- not even "maybe."

Corn is a nice crop for SEE-1 -- easy to grow, tasty.

But one generally throws away much of the plant growth -- the husks and
stalks.

Sure you can feed this to pigs or goats probably, but is there some
"digestive" process that will break up the cellulose (without heavy duty
chemicals or machinery) to the constiuent shorter carbohydrates into a form
comfortable for human consumption?

Maybe a fermentation and still does this, right? Do they distill just the
sweet corn into alcohol or do they do the starchy husks and stalks, too?

Anybody care to hunt down some Web-info on this?

There's a excellent article on aquaculture in the new _Discover_ magazine (Sept.
2002), pp. 56-63.

I was amazed to learn that nearly 1/3 of fishy foods consumed by humans
worldwide is grown via aquaculture -- and that aquaculture is expected to PASS
BEEF in total production in the next 10 years.

The article is not online yet -- the "current" issue on the Web is August 2002.

I saw another estimate, Jack, of fish density in aquaculture ponds. It was
for young salmon (that article in _Discover_ I sent luf-team an alert about).

It seems to come to more like one young fish per 8 ft^3 -- which means we
should not run more than about 15 fish in our tank.

SEE-1 report for Friday, August 2, 2002

The thermometer in the sun on the deck at this moment (4:57 PM) reads
123. The one in the shade reads 94 -- the one inside with my A/C
also reads 94. It's sunny with a slight breeze -- a beautiful day,
really, but -- whew! HOT!

One of the missing guinea chicks came home. The count for a couple
of days was 10 -- Capt. Mendez, !Xoola, and 8 beginners -- not
counting Ishie, off on her own. But today it is 11 (plus Ishie). I
guess the little guy was just lost in the woods for two days -- not
killed by predators as I thought. It must have been a terrifying and
lonely experience for him.

My foot seems to be healing well. I don't hobble around any more
than I have to, but I am hobbling between bedroom, bathroom, kitchen,
and computer desk (and TV) freely, without much pain.

I ate a couple of grasshoppers this afternoon, had a glass of iced
mint tea, and generally enjoyed the ambiance. (I didn't really eat
any grasshoppers, but I'm thinking about it.)

How is the tea and can you post a good mint tea recipe? I mean how
much mint do you use to flavor the water? Do you boil the water or
just add the shredded leaves to cold water, then add ice?
