As Ed stated traceroute and ping can be used as a 'general rules'.

To further confuse all I add this information. I have heard that some ISP's,
Websites,
and FTP servers, turn off traceroute and ping for so-called security reasons.
Then
there are those that also give these utilities a lower priority (through the
network
and routers) so the ping or traceroute to them is not in any way indicative of
download
speed.

Ed is very correct in that less hops equals faster downloads but there are a few
exceptions out there. Another factor to consider is server loading.

I have created a new LUGY web page (http://www.boldfaced.com/lugy) with
my favorite logo (#4d). If the group decides on a different logo I will
replace it. The old web page has a message that we changed our name
and a link to the new page.

I would also like to take this opportunity to invite anyone to improve
on the very limited web page I have done. You may take the existing
one and modify it and tell me where to get the new one, email some
html that I can add to it, or start over and put the new one somewhere
that I can get it (I have an anonymous ftp area if that is needed).

I finally was able to download the entire (23+MB) WordPerfect 8 file without
interruption, but when I went to unzip and untar the file, I get an error saying

"invalid compressed data -- crc error"

Should I trash the download and try again? What is a crc error, I can't find
any documentation on it.
BTW, I get the same error message whether I use the "gunzip" command or "tar

For anybody interested, I bought a Linux book that included 3 CD's containing
Red Hat 5.1, Caldera OpenLinux Lite 1.2, and Star Office 4.0. I'll loan them to
anyone that wants to use or install them, as long as I get them back. I also
have Red Hat 4.2 and Red Hat 5.2 CD's if anyone needs them (Netscape

Anne,
To cast my vote (or .02 worth,) I'm equally divided over 4c and 4e. I do
like the higher contrast of the lettering.
In regards to other ideas, I was working along similar lines, but I had
"Tux" in front of the county map with the group name in a arch above the whole
deal. This way it could be put on circular stickers, patches, whatever. Good
Work on your designs!

Dear LUGYs,

Steve asked for variations on #4, so there would be more contrast
between the letters and the map.

So, here are the 5 original logos...

Have to add my 2 cents re the topic of downloads.
Here at remote Spruce Mt the copper land line runs at 24 kb no matter
what I do.
About a year ago I installed Direct PC. Now download sing along at up
to 400 KB.
The installation was a bear but great support from the Tech folks at
Hughes. Cost though is reasonable, about $19.00 a mo. If anyone is
interested I'd be happy to supply info and install help.
Oh, the bird is located in the South sky up about 42 degrees, very near
the Direct TV bird. It is less powerful and harder to acquire. The set
up took a weekend but I installed a special tower, etc. Well worth the
effort surfing the web is a whole new experience.

No, there is no Linux version, runs under Win 95 or 98 (uuuuugggghhhh

Anne,

I really like them all.

If I had to rank them in order of preference (best first), it would be:

#4
#5
#1
#3
#2

Although #4 and #5 are pretty much tied for me. I really like the picture of
the Butte, but don't know if it fully symbolizes our new county-wide name.

I'm assuming that Win98 is the same in this regard as Win95 and WinNT, but the
basic syntax (in a DOS Window) is:

tracert SITE

For example,

tracert ftp.cdrom.com gives me:

C:\>tracert ftp.cdrom.com

Tracing route to wcarchive.cdrom.com [209.155.82.18]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

   1 <10 ms <10 ms <10 ms bunyip.cti-ltd.com [165.113.130.254]
   2 <10 ms <10 ms <10 ms portal.cti-ltd.com [165.113.194.1]
   3 31 ms 31 ms 63 ms R-CRL-LAY-02-S0x0.US.CRL.NET [165.113.220.17]
   4 47 ms 62 ms 47 ms gw-phx1.c.us.crl.com [165.113.52.5]
   5 32 ms 47 ms 46 ms E0-CRL-SFO-02-E0X0.US.CRL.NET [165.113.55.2]
   6 31 ms 47 ms 47 ms wcarchive.cdrom.com [209.155.82.18]

Trace complete.

This shows the 5 routers that a TCP/IP packet will probably have to get through
to get
to the destination site.

For other options on tracert, just type tracert by itself.

I think this may depend a lot on your ISP.

For me (at work), ftp.cdrom.com is one of the fastest.

I am not sure how current it is.

I hope I'm not retreading well-known ground here, but one way to get an
approximate idea of the relative speed of a site for you is to use traceroute
(tracert under everyone's favorite MS product). This will tell you how many
hops you are away from the site on the Internet. As a general rule, more
hops equals less speed.

For instance, ftp.cdrom.com which is fast for me is 6 hops away.

On the other hand, ftp.codemeta.com is somewhat slower at 23 hops.

Another way to check relative speed is ping.

For ftp.cdrom.com the average round-trip time is 45.1 ms. For
ftp.codemeta.com the average round-trip time 165.1 ms.

Shep,

Setting up an AX25 radio packet network is one up on all of us, I think,
but if you have any TCP/IP or kernel-tweaking questions, we can probably
help. I'd sure be interested in the details of using AX25 for
networking. Something about thumbing my nose at the telcos seems so
appealing. Oops! Phone cops, pretend you didn't see this.

Weird!

I believe those of us who receive the list via e-mail got the right message.

In looking at those messages via the web interface I randomly got the correct
message or some other message. I was able to view the correct message if
I was persistent enough in clicking on the subject for the message. It
appears that egroups is having trouble of some sort. If this continues, we
might want to move our list to one of the competing free list providers.

Dear Linux User Group,

Do you know us? ICP vortex RAID Controllers offer the best Linux support in the
industry. We'd like to mail you information about our PCI-Wide/Ultra SCSI,
PCI-Wide/Ultra2 SCSI and PCI-Fibre Channel models to share with your Group
Members.

Did you know, for example, that:
. The ICP driver has been included in every Linux kernel from 2.0.31.
. The ICP Linux driver and tools are developed, supported and maintained
in-house.
. An ICP Controller can be used as the primary boot controller, which
means all major Linux distributions can be installed on an ICP Controller array
straight out of the box.
. The ICP setup utility for hard disk configuration resides on the Controller,
which
means setup is accessed during bootup via a hotkey, without booting MS-DOS.
. The powerful ICP monitoring utility, GDTMON, allows Linux users to keep a
close eye on all major functions of the array.

And the list goes on. ICP is fully committed to continued support and
development of drivers and tools for the Linux OS. Please send us a mailing
address and we'll keep you and your Group Members updated on all the latest
Linux RAID developments!

Thanks!

Ed,

Thanks for the help. I've already gotten rid of most of the vgagames and
vgacards rpm's, as well as doom (the sound wouldn't work anyway). I do want to
keep dosemu and emacs but I will try some of the others.

Hey,

At the last PLUG/LUGY meeting, those present decided to meet on the
second Tuesday of every month at around 7 pm. The current meeting place
is the Prescott Brewing Company (in the restaurant area so that all ages can
attend).

So, to that effect, this is an announcement that we'll be meeting on April
13th around 7pm at the PBC. Those of us who made it to the last one had a
lot of fun, so I'd encourage people to try to make it. I'd love to meet some of
you "virtual" people and put a face to the name. In addition, it is a good
excuse to have a beer or two. I think everyone knows that Linux and beer go
together like, uh, Linux and beer.. :)

In a very unrelated note, I thought I'd pass along the information that
apparently Arizona Snowbowl (best skiing in Flagstaff! :) is reportedly open
again for skiing. Get a few runs in before it's all gone!

Ed

Hi,

I'm Robert Levin, head of operations of Open Projects, a service devoted to
providing online connectivity to "projects and groups involved with open
source, open technology or open information." We run an IRC network
consisting of about 30 servers worldwide, as well as DALnet-style nickname
and channel reservation services which allow our users to maintain a
permanent channel presence. I'd like to invite your members to use our
facilities.

In addition to our own IRC hostnames, we are pointed to by:

irc.linux.org
irc.redhat.com
irc.debian.org
irc.linux.org.au

and irc hostnames of various other domains. We are particularly involved
with the Linux community, and are home to Linux Australia, Debian GNU/Linux
and Linux Internet Support Cooperative's #LinPeople Linux support channel.
Stampede Linux and KDE also run small coordination channels on our network.

A full list of our irc servernames and a pointer to an IRC help site are
available on:

http://openprojects.nu/services/irc.html

We are very much interested in helping Linux groups all over the planet
network for problem solving, project coordination and general discussion.
We hope you'll come see us. Feel free to look me up; my IRC nick is 'lilo'.

Sincerely,

Robert Levin

I can't find the "Powered by Linux" stickers I told the group about @ the
gathering last night, but I have found some other stuff if anyone is interested.

LINUX BADGES-these are tiny stickers (about the size of the "Intel Inside"
stickers on most computers) that show "TUX" the penguin only, and run 65 cents
ea. up to 499 pieces available @ www.scotgold.com.

LINUX STICKERS, HATS, T-SHIRTS, STUFFED ANIMALS, AND PINS-that say "PENQUIN
POWER" AND "LINUX" are available @www.linuxmall.com/penguinpower.html.

By the way, I just noticed my microcrash "natural" keyboard does not have a
"cents" key anywhere, leave it to microsoft to make no cents (sense).

Hello, I work for Pacific HiTech, we make the TurboLinux distribution. My
job is primarily to increase awareness of TurboLinux, which often includes
contacting Linux User groups and other user groups. If you'd be interested
I can have one or two copies of the latest TL, 3.0.1, sent as evaluation
copies for the group.

Also, we have a links page at PHT and I'm currently contacting every linux
group I can find about reciprocal links, if you could add PHT to your links
page, we would appreciate it, I'll be adding you during one of the next
updates most likely.

If you have any questions, comments, suggestions, complaints, or problems
with TL feel free to contact me at justin@.... We also have a
newsgroup on USENET : alt.os.linux.turbolinux.

Thank you for your time, Regards

Justin
