I have a System76 system and Ubuntu 9.10 and have tried VMware, Win4Lin and VirtualBox.  By far VirtualBox has worked best for me.  For my computer, setting up networking was a little work to figure out, and Bridging with wireless (wlan0) works for me, not NAT.  Access to the Ubuntu data is accomplished through My Network Places, using the VirtualBox Shared Folders in the Entire Network.  Flash drives and iPod Touch work, but you have to add them to the USB list.  For the iPod, I have to first plug it into Ubuntu, then unmount it.  Virtual machine performance seems to be pretty good on my system.

I would be glad to provide more information via e-mail or phone (227-1895).

The performance of anything virtualized that uses graphics heavily will
suck mightily compared to code running on native drivers. Given hw prices,
and the fact that apparently you don't mind paying $$$ for Windoze apps,
I am surprised you'd bother with all the effort required to slow things down
by virtualizing them. Why not just run separate Windoze and Other systems?
Samba and a gbit net will allow you to share whatever you want just as easily
as a virtual instance sharing a linux disk.

I have 8 systems all running variants of debian/ubuntu, with a
couple of active instances of Win4lin hosting XP for occasional client
work, but if I had to spend any significant time at all on Windows,
I'd burn a box just for that.

All that said, win4lin on debian with the kqemu kernel module is rock
solid and amazingly fast. I had fun watching the feynman lectures
over M$'s infernal silverlight stuff, full screen 1920x1200. But do
make sure your cpu has modern virtualization support:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/X86_virtualization

Not all do...

I've been noticing this trending blog meme, but been too busy to

I'm planning to address this in my upcoming OSBR article, but that

Cody Lee came over and helped me resolve several issues (Thanks, Cody!) and one of the resolutions was what you suggested almost to the letter, Russ! The main issue resolution was totally unsuspected; a corrupted profile! When that was replaced and the flash plugin installed all the Firefox issues were resolved. He also helped me with another pet project: the ability to download portions of a music feed that doesn't make their URL readily available. The solution started with an existing implementation using an old version of kaffeine that I could get to save its playlist to a file during the time that the browser was using kaffeine to play the music stream. Then, later, I could invoke kaffeine with the saved playlist file(s) to play the online stream with no help from the browser connection. Kaffeine has no ability to write the stream to a file (.wav, for example). We were able to use the URL data from the playlist file in a recent version of KMplayer (front end for mplayer) to listen to the streaming audio and save it to an .asf file. Later I found it would also save in WAV format (Audacity can work with that!). Now I have some learning to do, since this copy of KMPlayer comes with an extremely abbreviated help file.  Such recordings get transported out to a computer at our cabin (no internet there) to become part of its music library in the wilderness.
We spent a few very productive hours!

You're sure it's not a flash plugin issue? I generally have had to go to
the adobe site and just download and stuff the plugin into the firefox
plugins dir:
/usr/lib/iceweasel/plugins/libflashplayer.so
That is, when I use whatever is the default flash player ISTR being in a
world of hurt similar to what you describe.
This is 64 bit of course.
But surely this came up in LUGY before. At any rate, the current
flash plugin that I'm using, for many days without a restart, without a crash
or even silent weirdness, is
libflashplayer-10.0.32.18.linux-x86_64.so.tar.gz

Hello Michael

Wasn't referring to overclocking, the Black edition runs at 3.1Ghz.  With the Black Phenom II X2 you can reportedly unlock the X2 and essentially make it an X4, for free.  Believe the "AMD Overdrive" utility can also do this but Jim didn't state that in his earlier post, thought the utility might be from Gigabyte, the board manufacturer.

CPUs are generally multiplier locked, the only way to change this, is to
physically bridge the pins in question. AMD sells "Black" edition CPUs that
aren't multiplier locked. Intel sells "Extreme Edition" CPUs that aren't
multiplier locked.

With a multiplier locked CPU, you can only raise the Front Side Bus (FSB)
speed, not a combination of multiplier and FSB.

AMD Overdrive is likely a utility that can be used (with windows) to
automagically overclock the CPU's FSB speed (usually needing other ratios
adjusted, as well as the CPU voltage increased slightly.

To be honest, pretty much any CPU you can buy today is a speed deamon that
likely doesn't need any overclocking, unless you REALLY want to, or do a
crap-load of video encoding.

You should be able to add a 1 TB disk for $70.00 or so. The motherboard

allows you to unlock the dual processor into a quad processor with a

firmware update. Read the reviews Newegg reviews. I changed the video card

later to an Nvidia one that would allow me to run Windows 2000. It runs Win

XP up and most Linux systems.

You're sure it's not a flash plugin issue? I generally have had to go to
the adobe site and just download and stuff the plugin into the firefox
plugins dir:

/usr/lib/iceweasel/plugins/libflashplayer.so

That is, when I use whatever is the default flash player ISTR being in a
world of hurt similar to what you describe.

This is 64 bit of course.

But surely this came up in LUGY before. At any rate, the current
flash plugin that I'm using, for many days without a restart, without a crash
or even silent weirdness, is

libflashplayer-10.0.32.18.linux-x86_64.so.tar.gz

My version of Firefox is 3.5.2. It is running in Mepis 8.0, a Debian distro, on
an AMD64 dual processor machine. It refuses to display properly Facebook pages.
It also fails on some Amazon pages, and has recently begun failing on U-Tube.
Several LUGY members have reported "no such problems". A forum at the Firefox
web site contains many complaints of the same kind. Windows IE has no problems,
but I use Linux to AVOID Windows!
I need help in getting Firefox to work like others report. I need onsite
troubleshooting and repairs that are beyond my capabilities. Please respond via
email (alhawley@...) if you can help; I expect to pay normal
consulting fees to anyone who can rescue me from this situation.

Members of LUGY,

We are continuing to meet at different venues each month for the 'social' gathering of LUGY.  For the November gig, we decided to try El Charro:

El Charro
120 N Montezuma St.
Prescott, AZ 86301
928-445-7130
Tuesday, November 10, 2009, 7:00 P.M.

Here's a picture of the building.  They are right next door to the new location of the Taj Mahal downtown.

Here's a Google map link:
http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&q=120+N+Montezuma+Street+prescott+az+86303&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=120+S+Montezuma+St,+Prescott,+Yavapai,+Arizona+86303&z=16

NOTE: The previous Google map link that I included was not correct.
I had entered 120 N, but Google decided to display 120 S in the
               map.  This has been corrected.

I put the reservation jointly under the following names:

   Anne Jablinske
   LUGY

Parking suggestions:

   - on the street
   - in the parking lot behind the Prescott Brewing Company

So, see you at El Charro on Tuesday, November 10, 2009 at 7:00 P.M!

- Anne
