Hi,

Another one from 11-05-09,Theophilus IMO has the most impressive central peak of any crater on the near side in fact I think it is practically a mountain range in it's own right.
The image details are with the image.

A question;
Could someone of the group's nocturnal photographers tell me something about the maximum exposure time (in minutes) of today's digital cameras?
I'm about to buy a new digital camera (a REAL sturdy camera), because my petite slim-looking SONY CYBERSHOT DSC T-33 is "over-and-out" (read: it's history).
The maximum exposure time of this slim T-33 camera was only six seconds (WAY too short!).
I want to make nocturnal digital photographs of the moon's track across the sky, lightning, bioluminescence, etc... etc...

Danny.

Hi All,

Here is a response I received from Charles Wood when I emailed him asking if he
was aware of the problem.

Ken - Yes - I think it has been corrupted by hackers or spammers. I asked my
programmer to look at it a month ago when it was sporadically not-working and he
couldn't find anything wrong. Now its persistently broken - hopefully he can
isolate the problem.
I hope it will be back soon but can't say until problem is discovered.
Thanks,
Chuck

Hello.

That's an error normaly caused by:

1. Database engine not running.
2. Change in the passw/username
3. Change in the code for making the connection.

Most of the time, making a full restart of the database engine fixes the problem.

I can lend a hand to Chuck's programmer,if they want to :)

Clear skies!

Hello,

I would like to share the following pictures, taken with a 3" newtonian and with no extensive processing,

The first and second set were using 2 digital cameras and an Orion SteadyPix camera adaptor. The third set was using an Orion CMOS Starshoot camera and a 2x Barlow due the focal lenght of the small newtonian.

Hi Danny,

A digital camera designed for daytime use will be limited by thermal signal
(dark current) to about 10 minutes or so depending on temperature. You can go
longer in winter and less in summer. Cooled dedicated CCD astro-cameras can
expose for hours, but usually exposures are taken just long enough to bury the
read noise (up to about 30 minutes, depending on filter, sky brightness, etc.)
and then multiple exposures are stacked.

Hope this helped,
Tom

Assuming you are talking about DSLRs, probably the Canon Digital Rebel XT (now
XSi) and the Nikon D60s have a significant part of the market share for DSLRs
used for astrophotography (at a 550-750 USD price point).

As explained in Covington's guide for the Canon Digital Rebel, (both) of these
cameras have two modes:

1) maximum 30 sec exposure in shutter-priority mode;

2) noise limited in "bulb" mode.

Bulb mode forces the exposure until you release the shutter button. In
astrophotography, this means the _shutter cable_ or by shutter computer control.
As expert level imager Tom Bash notes, 10 minutes is a good engineering working
rule for the bulb mode exposure time limit.

http://www.covingtoninnovations.com/dslr/EOS300Dastro.html
http://www.covingtoninnovations.com/dslr/MaxDSLR/index.html

To guide your purchase, I would think in terms of what cameras are well
supported with astrophotography computer control programs, e.g. - Canon Digital
Rebel with MaxDSLR and MaxIm DL.

Sorry Chuck T., a fake lunar gif really got my blood to boil. I won't blame you
if you pull this post off the air.

Danny, last evening I listened to Coast to Coast Am for their lunar program. I
was disappointed. The guest give this gif presentation as some type of proof
that a smoke stack thousands of feet tall is belching water vapor. The image was
familiar to me. It resemble
70mm image catalog Apollo 8 magazine 13 here's the url
http://www.lpi.usra.edu/resources/apollo/frame/?AS08-13-2329
here is the url for the gif presentation
http://shadowboxent.brinkster.net/moon/ESJmoon.gif
Before I declare this gif as a hoax, are there any other orbital imagery not in
the LPI catalogue I can look at that has both lunar horizon and the earth in the
background during the Apollo 8 mission? You have more expertise in this area
than myself in this matter. You have this nack of finding treasure troves of
imagery we all overlook.

If you concentrate on the gifs Earths image, it will actually grow in size, thus
I believe this is sufficient proof, to me at least, that it is a doctored gif.
And I also believe that the so call smoke stack is actually a long narrow shadow
cast by an irregularly shape rim edge. The so call smoke shadow also disappears
the moment the other streaks vanishes. It is not possible to see water vapor from
this height or direction. This is a photo and not a photo using infared or
ultraviolet. And Even if there was a thick cloud thousands of feet above the
lunar surface twice shine would adversly affect its dark shadow. Also I believe
someone tried unsucessfully to morph some images together to make this gif
appear as film footage as those streak appear to be interlace artifacts. I'm
afraid alot of people will be taken in by this hoax. Stuff like this really p***
me off. I feel the need to say or do something about this. Any background
information would be graciously appreciated.

I was thinking along these lines, 1. establish a new YouTube account under a
different name. 2.use my game engine to generate a lunar surface and place game
buildings, vehicles, smoke ect... 3. then make the claim that this was actual
but supressed video proof of some kind of alien base on the moon. Of course is
will be out of focus and far away. Then just sit back and watch people
reactions. Maybe I shouldn't, but dogon'it I'm ticked off about this. This is SO
faked!

No problem. I think at some point in time, all of us have become angry

I must say, (totally O.T.);
These days I have a miserable kind of cold with a lot of coughing. Our
workfloor is a real draughty vent-hole; a large import-export building with
a lot of in-and-out coming trucks, and a continuous south-western humid wind
blowing all around. Almost maritime conditions, because we're at the
industrial port region of my (sea-connected) city (this via a canal).
These days, moon-related observing shall not be allowed I think.

Thanks Kurt!
I must say,
I'm looking for a sturdy digital reflex-camera, which could support my KENKO
Fish-Eye 180° lens (a bulky-looking contraption which fits on a common
objective-lens of analog reflex-cameras).
I want to make All-Sky photographs again (some sort of revival of those
which I made with my Praktica-Pentacon MTL-3, on film).
I dream of digital long-exposure photographs of the nocturnal sky, made
though my Fish-Eye lens (it's dormant since the end of the nineties).

Danny.

To Group - this thread is off-topic, but will not persist. - K

To Danny -

See pictures at bottom of:

I have been looking at this myself, serpendipitously, over the last couple of
weeks. Adapting your film fisheye lens (I own a Zenitar with a Pentax-K mount)
doesn't work with modern DSLRs because the camera chip is too small compared to
the entire chip (39mm on film compared to only 6-9mm on the chip). The Zenitar
lens works but only returns a 14 deg TFOV. With an convex automotive mirror I
can get up to 80 deg TFOV - which is what you get with Canon Digital Rebel and
their lowest f/1.6 zoom lens.

As it happens, just last night, I received and tested an Edmund adapter and
fish-lens with my ImageSource DMK for meteor recording.

My refracting setup no. 1 -

I only have done a "smoke test", having received these components by mail
yesterday. Seems to work well enough as an all sky cam with my ImageSource DMK

I've added a new chapter to the saga of my observatory covering the
installation of the low-voltage electrics. I need 12 volts for the
cameras, 18 volts for the LX200, and 19 volts for the laptop (and no, it
won't work with 18!).

I also want to be able to control the LX200 from the desk, so I have
moved the focuser box over there. I want to extend the handbox too, but
I'm having difficulties finding the right connectors. Standard
telephone extensions in the UK are no use as they all have BT plugs on
them. I found what looked like the right thing from Maplin, but it
turned out to have what I believe are called 6P4C connectors, the the
plug is too big to go in the LX200. I need 4P4C connectors. Maplin do
the plug but not, as far as I can tell, the socket. I'm wondering if I
could pack the 6P4C socket to accept the plug from the handset, and
maybe file down the 6P4C plug until it fits the LX200.

Anyway, the details are there for anyone who is interested.....

Chapter 16 was a really great read. Its getting more exciting at each step.

In the States 4p4c connectors are called rj11.
some places to search for your desired connectors:
radioshack.com
http://www.radioshack.com/search/index.jsp?kwCatId=&kw=rj11%20connectors&origkw=\
RJ11%20%20connectors&sr=1

compusa.com
http://www.compusa.com/applications/SearchTools/search.asp?keywords=rj11

belkin.com/
http://www.belkin.com/search/?q=rj11&sid=1&x=13&y=7

I have no idea what, if any, the imposed export regulations of such an item as a
rj11 would be. Probly nothing at all.

Thanks, Rogue. Not much more excitement, I fear. I've a few lights to
put up and I really need more storage - I'd like an air-tight cupboard
that I can keep dry inside. I have silica gel inside my cases and that
seems to be working well, but I still don't have room for things like my
ST80, or focusing masks not to mention my dew shield....

I've realised I can get 4P4C plugs and so can dispense with the wretched
coiled cable completely. I really don't understand why manufacturers
use these things. On the telescope they just get tangled with each
other and every other cable around there. I have an American telephone
extension cord but that has 6P4C connectors too.

Clear skies,

Peter

Hello.

I would like to invite you to check the reviews for the MiniMoonWatch event, the past Saturday 21st. The event was carried out, but not as planned: Mr Muprhy and his minions appeared in the nick of time for disrupting the activity :(

But, I would like to share what happened that evening.

Thank you all that showed interest in this event, which I intend to repeat very soon!

Clear skies!
