Help us welcome our guest speaker and our friend who is coming in from the San Francisco Bay Area, Dr. Eleanor Rieffel at our meeting on July 17.
Eleanor G. Rieffel is a Senior Research Scientist at FX Palo Alto Laboratory, where she has been working since 1996. A mathematician by training, she has performed research in fields as diverse as geometric group theory, hypertext, bioinformatics, video analysis, evolutionary computation, module robot control, and quantum computation. She is in the final stages of the editing process for a book on quantum computing to be published by MIT press. Her research currently focusses primarily on methods for creating virtual models from physical scenes.
With the emergence of applications such as Google Earth and virtual worlds, as well as more traditional applications in real estate, entertainment, and computer aided design, there is more and more desire for virtual spaces and objects based on real spaces and objects. Unfortunately creating such virtual content remains cumbersome and time consuming. Eleanor will demo some of the better existing solutions, and also her group's approach to the problem.
Please RSVP if you plan to attend on JULY 17. We will start with a potluck dinner and Eleanor will give her talk and presentation.
