Description

The place for people to share information about LWE loudspeakers - the legendary line of compact, high-fidelity loudspeakers designed by Louis W. Erath (1917-2008) that achieved near perfect frequency response throughout the range of human hearing by implementing a cleverly designed motional-feedback system.

The flagship, LWE-I model was the first commercially available, compact, motional-feedback loudspeaker that successfully extended bass response down to subwoofer territory (20 Hz), while maintaining a nearly flat frequency curve up to 20 kHz. Audio magazine reviewers praised the LWE-I's "marvelously balanced", "open" sound and it's remarkable ability to deliver a "solid, almost palpable" bass, all from a small (for the time) enclosure.

LWE loudspeakers were produced from the mid 1960's through the early 1970's by LW Erath Co., Acoustron Corp., and Precision Acoustics Ltd. CM Labs briefly sold a version of the LWE-I called the CM15 Servosound.

Other LWE speaker models produced include the LWE-II, LWE-III, LWE-IV, LWE-VI, LWE-VII and the giant LWE-VIII.

If you are looking for information about how LWE speakers were connected to stereo amplifiers, you are in the right place. Thanks to some of our most dedicated members we now have a large library of LWE clip kits as well as a clip kit design manaul. Over the years members have contributed much LWE information such as LWE brochures, manuals, specifications, magazine reviews, photos etc...

Most of us have working LWE systems so feel free to ask any questions in the message board or simply introduce yourself and tell us what LWE systems you've heard.

Please do contribute any historical anecdotes, photos, technical data (esp.clipkits) by uploading them to the appropriate folders. By sharing information about these rare speaker systems we can help save some of them from being discarded due to ingorance of their great hidden potential and historical value.

Re: Pair of LWE II on Ebay
This looks to be an "instant kit" pair as the controls are mounted on the front, however, the Jones plugs are typically mounted on the back on the instant

Pair of LWE II on Ebay
I suspect he'll bargain down quite a ways, eventually. The cabinets are pretty bad, but drivers seem fine, and they are pretty rare. Vintage LWE-II

Re: Louis Erath
I'm not a technician, but seems to me that at this point it would be easier to fix the clipkit and retain the full benefit of this system. Others more
