The problem was solved by re-loading the entire handbox file to the handbox.
There are bugs in ASU v5.9 with respect to Autostar 497ep. See the same posting
in Meade Autostar group for details.

Mode and scroll down to choose another guided tour object, the Autostar just
hangs and says "Searching"--and the only way to get out of this is to cut power

I find a big rubber crutch tip ideal -- easy to locate without having to take my
eye away from the ocular, and is small enough so that I don't bump into the
diagonal with my clumsy hands (well, almost never).

Hear, hear, John.

The FIRST investment I would always recommend would be the Peterson
kit. Anything else, without this, is really futile IMHO.

And, unless you really need remote focus control, or have a need for
long automated imaging sessions, I have never seen a valid
recommendation for a motorised focuser thereafter.

And, surely it has to be worth making at least a 'trial' large
diameter knob - unless you are totally convinced that you could never
make something for yourself!

Have a good look around - you might be surprised at what you could
press into service. I have a huge selection of discs, tubes and
general thingummybobs that I hang on to just in case they might come
in useful on the scope. My wife is correct (aren't they always?) - I
'am' mad!!

If you would like a 3x3 'slab' of HD foam, and some toothpicks, let me
know your postal address (off group) and I will send them - FOC.
Seriously.

The Peterson focuser bearing kit is pretty nice...I have it and don't feel the
need to get a large knob or a crayford.

Thanks Bill, Joe, Niall, Robin and Lee for the suport about my topic!
Now I have to select what I want to get, but Scopestuff has a nice one for just
28 bucks, that also looks good enough.
In the other hand, Starlight Feathertocu microfocuser is the best thing, but its
cost junps 'till 219 dollars...
Again, thanks a lot for the advice and support!!

Hi CB,

Why not first try the "Jiffy" focus enhancer for $0.00 before you buy anything?
Look at http://obs.nineplanets.org/jif/jiffy.html to look what I mean.
In this way you can try if the principle of a larger knob works for you. It does
for me, for more than 8 years now.

Our skies are filled with nebulae. The nebulae of interest in this tutorial are
huge regions of gas – gas clouds. The nebulae I'll discuss here are called
emission nebulae. We image emission nebulae by means of the light from the
surrounding gas cloud which is ionized by radiation from one or more nearby
stars.

The most common emission nebulae are of the hydrogen emission type. They emit a
very narrow band of red light, and with the appropriate filter (Hydrogen alpha,
or H-a), the camera sees essentially only the nebula light, and moon light and
terrestrial light pollution is nearly completely eliminated.

Imaging with H-a levels the imaging playing field. No matter where you are
imaging from, with an H-a filter you have the equivalent of magnitude 8 super
dark skies! Honest!

Pros of H-a Imaging
• Eliminates light pollution
• Background is now inky black – backgrounds have a zero or nearly zero black
point
• Stars are much dimmer, minimizing star bloat, chromatic aberration and "fat"
stars.

Cons of H-a Imaging
• Very little signal is passed by the filter, so imaging times have to be fairly
long – five minute subs are possible if your camera has very low readout noise
• Autoguiding is probably required
• DLSRs without mods don't have much sensitivity to the H-a light

Here's an example of 2 hours and 15 minutes in nine 15-minute subframes
http://home.att.net/~dpersyk/new.htm

The target is NGC 281, a/k/a the "Pac Man" nebula and Sharpless 2-184. I used a
Takahashi astrograph (I miss my LX-90!), f/3.3 and Starlight Xpress SXV-H9
camera. The filter was a 6 nm FWHM H-a. Most processing was done with
ImagesPlus. The false color was added in Photoshop with Noel Carboni's actions.
The Hubble employes false color, so I don't feel like I cheated.

I recommend H-a imaging to everyone who is plagued by sky pollution. No longer
will you have to journey to a dark site to get good images.

I have loads of them for sale. I chop them out of high density foam
sheet, about 1" thick, into discs about 3" in diameter.

Stick a toothpick into the foam and you are now focusing using an
effective diameter of about SIX inches!! (you can also stick little
'pegs' in to give you 'reference points')

How much?

100 unit of whatever your local currency is, with p&p charges (at
cost) over and above that.

Of course, if you have some foam and a knife handy, your only cost
might be the toothpicks .........

Thanks for the reply Joe,
I'm not sure what kind it is, it's the one from Meade. I'll look at the keyspan
and see if that works. It has to be the area of the problem. All the other
devices work. it's just confusing why it works on the laptop and not the desk
top.

Hi Medoc,

Made my own using a couple of plastic lids from glass bottles. The
larger one is about 3" diameter, the smaller fits tightly inside the
larger one to form a thing that looks a bit like an ice-hockey puck (if
you don't what that is, ask a Canadian or a Czech<g>). I cut a hole in
face of the smaller lid to make a tight fit over the existing focus
knob. On the inside face of the larger lid (opposite the hole) is a
double-sided stickey pad that adheres to the end of focus knob. This
gives a bit of extra grip.

I you want to go deluxe, mine has a piece of an old plastic tape measure
glued to the outside rim. I found a print of an old compass rose that
was a little smaller than the larger lid. Cut it out, laminated and
stuck in the the outer face of the larger lid.

Have fun,
Robin

Just to be sure. Look in the scope from the Corrector end and see if
there are any loose parts laying in the bottom of the OTA. If so, don't tilt
the OTA so they will fall against something important!

Thanks Andrew!
I'll keep setting time in a roughly manner at boot. Following your advice, I
won't try setting it from the ASCOM driver. Anyway, in Polar mode and once the
scope is SYNCed on a star, some seconds error, or even minutes, (in initial set
time or longitude) are of no importance. I guess. Maybe if trying to target some
NEO.... But this is not my scope usage.

Regards

Fernando

Hey guys, I'm hoping one of you computer guys ran into this or can offer any
tips. I have a vista laptop I have been using for quite some time with no
issues. It runs my LX90, focuser, PHD, and DSI.
I decided to upgrade my office computer and use the old one for the observatory.
It is a quad processer and works quite well. However I cannot connect with any
program to the autostar. It connects with everything else with no problems. It
will not connect to the scope with envisage, autostar suite, or Starry Night, I
also tried POTH. I changed ports but still cannot connect. I reinstalled the USB
to serial drivers as well. I can connect the laptop with out problems, I'm
stumped! Any ideas?

Hi Roy,

Thanks for the reply.

I was hoping for a club closer to home many years ago I did donate a
6" Meade scope to CPAC now got myself a 8" LX90 I know how to set it
up more or less but was hoping to find a club close to help me get the
best out of it.

The Internet is a great thing but I'm a hands on man you show me I
remember it, I try to read and get no were.

I updated my Autostar 497ep to v5CE1. My scope is a new LX90 GPS. It seems to
be working fine EXCEPT for the Tonight's Best guided tour--the tour picks
Jupiter as its first object (which makes sense these days) but then when I press
Mode and scroll down to choose another guided tour object, the Autostar just
hangs and says "Searching"--and the only way to get out of this is to cut power
and restart the telescope!

I thought it might have been a bad download so I re-installed the 5C#1 firmware
in Safe Load, got an "installed successfully" message, etc.

I didn't touch any tours in the updater, so that's not the cause.

Has anyone else had this problem? Any ideas on how to fix?

Thanks,
stan

Gday Fernando

Just for info, setting date/time serially can be fraught with danger, esp when
unparking, as the code is not very well integrated.
For the LX200GPSs, there is a special command,
but this isn't in the 497s.
You can set the time remotely using the remote Hbx facility quite safely tho.

options in the driver configuration is the "Auto Set Time (Classics only)". I'm
not using it because I thought it will not work with the Autostar 497. Do you
mean it's possible to skip date/time when the Autostar boots and let the driver
set this from the laptop? Or is it allways necessary to set date/time at boot
(manually/LNT/GPS)? I'm interested on the possibility of the laptop set option,
because appart from the comfort of power-up and go, in my case the laptop
maintains an accurate time updated every hour from internet.
