I've heard of people running OS X on Macs older and slower than a G3
400. Have you ruled out X on cost? I ask because I think you can
download OS 9 for free, but not X. Actually, with 10.3 now out, 10.2
should be available on the used market, and that is the earliest X I'd
consider.
